Already The 18th Of February

Subject: Already The 18th Of February

Good morning, all!

I got home yesterday evening and turned on the rain-delayed Daytona 500. At that point, they were about 60 laps in. Watched the rest of it, including the two "big ones," and they went to Overtime. On the last lap came Newman's frightening crash.

I've always liked Ryan—his completely non-standard engineer-with-a-degree-from-Purdue background appeals to me. He's also bad fast—the Rocket Man nickname hints at his qualifying prowess. The crash looked bad in real-time and even worse in slow motion, with tons of intrusion into the driver's compartment—and then the emergency team was slow to get to what was left of the car (they could learn a lot from Indy Car) as gas poured out of the shattered tank.

Then, we wait. The workers move slowly—never a good sign—and Jeff Gordon is near tears as Fox ends the broadcast. NASCAR blocks off the car with black screens so that fans can't see. Finally, the ambulance heads off to the Halifax Health Medical Center, which is were all severely injured drivers go. At this point, no one knows if Ryan is even alive. I'm worried that I've just watched another driver die on live television, like Dale, Dan, and Justin.

We wait some more. NASCAR fans on Twitter think the worst, and it's hard to disagree because the playbook NASCAR is following is close to the one they followed with Earnhardt in 2001. Finally, at about 10:00 PM, the word comes that a) Ryan's alive and b) his injuries are not life-threatening. A big exhale—but it takes me another two hours to go to sleep.

… and yet still we watch.
