They were launched around 1912 and served thru the end of WWII. The New York was used to escort convoys and for shore bombardment supporting infantry landings-10 14" cannon were her main guns. The New York was sunk in the Baker Atomic bomb testing at the Bikini Atoll having survivrd the first blast-an air burst, the 2nd was submerged-that was all she could take-be proud-took 2 nukes!. The Texas is berthed in the Houston Ship Channel at the San Jacinto Monument and State Park and is the flagship of the Texas Navy-we'll probably be permanantly dry docking her in the next 2 years as a century of salt water is detrimental to her hull. The Texas was drydocked for repairs 12 yrs ago, and it appears it will be better for the ships long term survival, and less expensive than drydocking every decade or so , to permanantly dry - berth the ship. It's the last surviving dreadnought type ship. Congrats on y'alls namesake! |
