We have strange rules attached to expiration dates. Legal things, persnickety people. However, these supplies are still good. So we give them away. The manufacture sells them to the government at cost, get a nice tax break and someone overseas gets supplies they desperately need. * We have learned throughout history that letting others fight their wars is cheaper than DIY. Yet, we still seem to do it. There are other times that the political fallout is so damned dicey that getting involved is nothing short of national suicide. So, sending money is much safer for our own survival. I am referring to the Ukraine here. As much I as I would love to mobilize NATO, doing so could easily mean ICBMs landing all over the US. For what it is worth, spending money like this is much cheaper than having to deal with them hating us, which they would do... hate is the wrong word, resent is more like it. It's complex, but it is what it is... I just wish we would stop backing the wrong dictator... but I could go on and on about that aspect of our history... don't even get me started about Vietnam.... |
