It's also a time to remind others that black people are black. Seems there is a trend to remind people of the difference in color throughout the year in media, entertainment, sports and a host of other areas. Being a minority, (white in South Florida), I can understand how important it is to celebrate the contributions of those from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It's an opporunity to learn from the past. Use the tools available to improve the future. Climbing the social ladder takes work. For some assimilation takes longer than others. Life and habits at home can contribute to success. A toast to those that have figured out the societal maze and built a good life in the U.S.A.. Yet, I understand. Somehow even having had relatives that served in the Union Army and being first generation American on my mothers side I am somehow at fault for the conditions in the past. Since so many are in such a hurry to erase history let's forget about the past. Put on the blinders and let's move forward toward the vision that our forefathers and mothers had dreamed of for freedom, equality and inclusion for all. But as I mentioned previously the future of success starts at home. |
