Problem is I threw out the old set up and dont remember exactly how it was wired. I know that it had one wire going to the switch and the other going into the outlet and a jumper wire between the two (or maybe two jumpers) and the switch worked. I dunno what to do now.

do you have power at the outlet? Is this switch still wired between the light and the outlet. There is only one switch you are using to control the outlet/light ( both?) If there is power at the outlet and you are trying to only control one side of it did you break out the tang between the screws? .
My though is that your outlet has the power. If this is the case disconnect the black wire from the outlet. You then have a white and a black wire going to the switch. put the black wire coming from the switch to the outlet on one end , then at the outlet connect the black you just removed with the white going to the switch. At the switch you will have black on bottom and white on top on the same side. If this works you need to wrap black tape around the white wire at the outlet and the switch.
