a closer look as me wonder what kinda bitsa this is.

The chassis number is 1958. No doubt about that. It is also a live rear axle car. IIRC, the race version had a de Dion rear axle.

The problem I have is that this was called the Stingray, not the SS.

The SS was the racer, was run at Sebring in 57 and didn't do very well. It was being built just as GM joined the AMA ban on autoracing, so it was never fully developed. Infact, Bill Mitchell paid out of pocket to race it.

I am sure the original Sting Ray is outlined in Zora's biography.

It should be noted that the design elements that Mitchell used for the C2 were gleened from an early 50s Alfa Romeo.
