Make Your Own Tooling

Subject: Make Your Own Tooling
by BillH on 2011/12/22 13:46:05

I like buying tools but I like making them much more especially "Low Usuage" ones.

When I was at Steve's machine shop painting his locomotive engine. I told him I wanted to use his lathe to make a punch cause my lathe has a hiccup right now. The pinch is used to stake the trailing arm bushings in place on a C2/3.

He said, just make the whole thimg while you're at it. I did the punch on the lathe, he programed his CNC mill for the plates, took him a minute and a half.
Made the whole tool in 35 minutes.
The smaller locating pin in one plate is a .001 press fit.

I have to get 2 bolts today.
Total cost - $4

First pic is the $100 tool from the Corvette catalogs.
