I honestly believe most of the LTX balancing problems were due to them changing in the middle of LTX production from the old forged rods to the PM rods... BUT the LTX's unkeyed hub and pulley/balancer combination on the front was a totally new concept on a SBC and didn't help either.
No doubt a 180K mile engine is no match for a low mileage one in the power dept.
I'm really glad you got your car back running and this engine you've had sitting for so long is still good as new. Will

I did care care of the new engine... it was taped up, so nothing could get in - throttle body, exhaust ports, hose bosses. I had plugs in, but only finger tight, cause about once every 8-10 months, I would squirt some 5-30 mobil 1 into the cylinders and give it a 1/4 turn of the crank. I hoped this would keep the rings from dinging up the cylinder walls. and wouldn't turn it so far as to damage the bearings.
When I unpickled it, I pour oil over the cam and lifters, over both valves and over the mains. Before trying to start it, I cranked it with no fuel or ignition and ran it for 10 to 15 seconds, per try, over 2 or 3 crankings.
When it did start, I didn't gas it above 2000 rpm until it was a bit warm.
