I used to own a 23' Baja boat with a 454 Magnum engine. The Mercury dealer told me I did not have to worry about winterizing the block and outdrive until the outside temps got into the 20s. So it appears that there is a bit of leeway in there. Still, I would not tempt fate!
I used to work with a guy who had been a pipeline contractor mechanic when he worked in Alaska. He said that in extremely low temps such as -40F they would leave equipment running or shut it off and drain the fluids.
