Glad it's fixed!
And I believe it. I've seen many times on a high mileage/or old set of plug wire that were "OK" and the engine was running good until several wires were moved around. This movement was just enough to crack the wire and cause a mis-fire!

Yep, that's clear now. I was just concerned that the main ground source was at the firewall, which is not a proper location. IMHO the more grounds the better!

In post #14 you wrote "moved negative to firewall". Do you plan on a ground strap from firewall to engine/frame?

A scheduled re-build or did something break?
I couldn't even guess the cost of that clutch assembly, too rich for my blood!

There has to be some kind of static setting/alignment setting for the distributor. Did you remove the distributor from the engine?

Any idea why or how that lifter was out of place? That would be my first concern. It takes a lot of something moving for that to happen.

Not sure, I've had the car since 1997. They're not original as they had grease fittings. Car has 92k now.

In your first post you mention the noise goes away when brakes are applied, this is usually a "good" indication of a bad bearing. As the rotor is being held by the pads, the bearing is also being supported by the rotor. At least this is my experience with front hubs. The CV shaft usually make a "thumping" sound similar to a U-Joint on a RWD vehicle. Again just based on my experience.
Any slop or motion in the front wheel when it's jacked up?

Did you find the cause of the blow-by before the rebuild?

Motor looks good, hard part is done.

Possible problem might be the adjustment screws/bolt with the plastic bumper. If I remember correctly there are at least two of these hidden in the bowels of the assembly. One is for the opening travel, the other is for closing travel.
I had one of these fall out of mine years ago and the light assembly would bounce when closed.

Finally got all the half shaft u-joint bolts loose! It was a fight to the end.
Used a 6 point 5/16 socket 3/8 drive from O'Reillys. One of those GM logo Performance brands with a 3/8 to 1/2 drive adaptor. Used a small 5/16 boxed end wrench on the diff side with a 8" pipe extension.
I was so happy I quit for the day.

Thanks for all the replies

Seems like the noise stops everytime the caliper is removed and re-installed? Possible the slide pins need to be cleaned and lubed with the disc brake lubricant? If the caliper sticks even a small amount this will set up a vibration in the pads causing the noise.

But also like Mat said, could be a brake line not releasing fluid fully keeping pressure on the caliper piston.

From my past experience with AC clutch air gaps, I go with the tighter gap 010-015 and rotate clutch to be sure there is no drag or contact with AC off.

Is the clutch disc "pulling" in when AC is activated?
It will make a single click with ignition on and AC function set on control panel.

Thanks for asking, but I haven't done anything yet except spray the bolts down with penetrating fluid a few times. Cold weather moved in (at least cold to me) and this put a bad case of lazy on me!

Thanks for all the replies and good suggestions! The weather turned too cold for me for a few more days.
It's no problem to let the car sit, that's what it's doing right now. I'm letting the Liquid Wrench work now.

That's a interesting idea of mixing some penetrant with grease, have never tried that.

The FSM has the bolt head as 8mm, but lots of folks use a 5/16. Not saying it's correct but real close.
8mm=.3149
5/16=.3125
What really pizzed me off was, all the sockets I broke were 20+ years old with NO hard use. I was counting on the "old" sockets to be a better quality than what is sold today.

I'm just going to try some impact 3/8 drive sockets and penetrating fluid, heat as required.

I'll update in a few days.

I don't think they're cross threaded, two bolts backed out OK. Just stuck real tight.

Thanks

No impact tools, just grunt power. Haven't used any penetrating fluid yet, I will before going any further. Looks like I need to visit NAPA and check out their better sockets. I was just curious what type sockets any body had good luck with (such as deep well 3/8 drive? or just stick with 1/4 drive).

Thanks

These are 6 point for sure. Yea, two sockets split down the middle and the other lost a chunk out the side. I'm sure it's going to take a impact rated socket.

I just broke 3 sockets trying to remove bolts from a u-joint. Two were Craftsman and one SK.
So, before I waste a day looking all over for sockets, what length and drive size worked for you guys that have done this?
I was using a short 5/16 six point, 1/4 drive. These went on bolt head good, but they were not impact rated.

Thanks

The oil sensor at the filter is for oil temp.
The sensor behind the distributor is for oil pressure at the gage, and for the fuel pump power after the initial first prime. It's a dual function switch.

I've changed lots of GM pins, springs and bushings in different cars but not a Corvette.
The spring won't kill ya, but it can take out a eye or really hurt a finger!
There is a spring tool sold at most of the box auto part stores. I would buy it, makes the job a lot easier. It is possible to remove the spring with a long screw driver, but a real PITA to install with just hand tools.

A few tips:
Have the car on level ground, or with the nose slightly "down hill", this helps keep the door open.

Place a floor jack with block of wood under rear of door to hold the door up before removing anything. Coupe doors are heavy.

Don't be in a hurry. The bushings can be awkward trying to install.

Is that a roller motor?
There's a couple of things I suggest looking at.
The rocker arm adjusting nut can/do lose their tension and can back off just enough for a loose adjustment.
And just possibly the rocker arm stud that's pressed into the head can be "pulling" out, not as common but does happen.

Disc brakes do not retract like drum brakes. There is always a slight amount of drag on the rotors, where drum shoes get pulled away by springs. The magic word here is slight.

Are you sure the park brake is not too tight?
Was there a good stream of fluid from each line/fitting when bleeding?
