7/06/06-- There is a giant amoeba roaming my lawn! Really. In the wee hours of the morning, a creeping, gelatinous mass of goo moves across my front yard devouring everything in its path. This bizarre, but apparently common life form is known as Fuligo septica, or dog vomit slime mold! It is not a fungus at all, but a large mass of cell nuclei called plasmodium (sounds yummy,) free of individual cell-wall structures, and enclosed in a single membrane.

Remember in school the pond water protozoa that you observed under a microscope? Now, imagine that critter, the size of a bagel moving around your yard, in what is termed as the "slug stage" of the organism. Mowing does not kill it. Fungicides don?t touch it. And, in my 101 degree southern California weather, it is thriving. The pictures show it in several stages of its life cycle. When sliced open, the amoeba oozes out a pungent slime from its fleshy core.

Researchers have used slime molds to remotely control robotic devices, and have shown that they can navigate the shortest path through a maze in laboratory experiments, sense without a nervous system, and "see" in the infrared spectrum. Remember, "The Blob"? - I am digging up my lawn tomorrow.

Snoop Dogg Arrested at SoCal Airport

Snoop Dogg was arrested on suspicion of illegal drug and gun possession, police said.
The rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, was arrested at 3:45 p.m. Thursday at Bob Hope Airport, police said. Snoop Dogg posted $35,000 bail and was scheduled to appear in court Dec. 12.



Airport police officers stopped Snoop Dogg at a loading zone for a vehicle code violation. When officers searched the vehicle they found a gun and marijuana, police said.

"There was no basis for this arrest," the rapper's attorney, Donald Etra, said in a statement. "We believe that once this is cleared up, all charges will be dismissed."

The Orange County district attorney's office has been considering charges against Snoop Dogg after authorities last month discovered a 21-inch collapsible baton in his bags as he boarded a New York-bound flight from John Wayne International Airport.

The rapper was convicted in 1990 of cocaine possession and charged with gun possession after a 1993 traffic stop. He pleaded guilty in exchange for three years' probation and a promise to make public service announcements against violence.

He was acquitted of murder in 1996 following the death of an alleged gang member who was killed by gunfire from the vehicle Snoop Dogg was traveling in.

Toilet Trouble

The owner of a public toilet in Vienna said he will remove urinals shaped like a woman's mouth from his restrooms following complaints from some women in town that they were sexist and inappropriate, according to the Associated Press.

The urinals in the "Opera Toilet" near the national opera feature thick, lipsticked lips, a set of teeth and a bright red tongue. The owner said they had been there for three years and he has heard no complaints until now.

A spokeswoman for the Vienna Department of Women's Affairs called the urinals "tasteless, misogynistic and offensive" and said they should be removed or the facility's owner could face legal charges.

KC cop charged with abusing 2-year-old girl

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? A Kansas City Police officer has been charged in the assault of a 2-year-old girl. The girl is in critical condition at Children's Mercy Hospital.

Nicholas A. Minet, 28, of Kansas City, was charged Friday with assault in the first degree and abuse of a child. On Thursday, officers responded to the 400 block of NW 71st Terrace in Kansas City on an ambulance call. When officers arrived they found a 2-year-old girl with multiple bruises to the forehead, "fingerprint" bruises to the inside of her arm, and what appeared to be insect bites to both of her legs.

Paramedics told officers the girl was unresponsive. According to court documents, Minet told officers he had been home with the girl, but was unable to explain the injuries.

Children's Mercy doctors told police that in addition to the bruises the girl had a rear skull fracture. Doctors also found an adult bite mark to her leg. When she arrived, the girl was in grave, critical condition. They performed emergency surgery.

According to police, Minet admitted to picking the girl up because she would not stop crying and that he shook her forcefully and he "slung" her to the floor. He said he believed he caused her injuries. He said he did not know how she received the bite mark.

Minet is currently in custody. Bond was set at $250,000.
