And that's the purpose of the pig-tail, to just splice into the harness by crimping or soldering.

Depending on the condition of your connector, here is the quick easy way.

OK, I see what you did on the "jumping" Power to the sensor. Terminal A on the relay is the 340 ckt which is 12v power.

I see two ground wire terminals on the MAF sensor. One is the black/white ckt 551 terminal A, the other is black ckt 476 terminal B.

This is where I'm not sure if your 87 and my 89 has the same wire colors.

I'm not 100% sure a 1989 FSM procedure is the same, but I'm thinking it is.
Based on my book, first step is just simply jumping 12 volts with a fused jumper to terminal G of ALDL, disconnect MAF sensor and then check voltage at harness terminal E (CKT 993) with test light.
This is different from what you did? Or did I read your procedure wrong.

My page for code 33 is 6E3-A-41.

Yea Andy, I'm aware of the wire problem on most early 80's GM products. I've re-wired many over the years, some easy and some not so easy. I was just curious what the exact problem was causing the code 36.

Are you saying there were bad/damaged wires in the system? I've been following this thread the last few days, seems like you put a lot of work into finding the problem! Congrats on the effort!

Yea, that sounds like a connection.
I have never had a coolant temp sensor go bad, I've changed several just as a "while I'm there" repair.

As far as the BWD brand, I've given up on them. Just too many failed parts in the last few years.

Also, charge the battery fully before the engine is started and ran with the replacement alternator. A alternator is not designed to charge a battery, only to maintain it while running.

Most of the time it will be the resistor. It is located on top of the HVAC box, just to the left where the heater hose is connected at firewall.

This is going to sound like a back-yard hack job but it does work in a pinch. I've used a carb choke cable for a control cable. It's been a few years but IIRC I got the cable from Pep Boys Auto parts. I had to cut some of the sheath and shorten it some, but it did work.

I've used different brand names of coolant flush over the years and I've found some more agressive than others. Some will cut enough scale loose that the thermostat will clog up. Just keep an eye out for this, or just change for peace of mind.

I finally decided to install this new mast. The ribbon had broken off at the bottom of the mast, so no quick fix. Removed the unit, and I might add it was a PITA!
Looked like it might have been changed at some point, there were no plastic rivets holding the halves together. Had screws around the perimeter with a nut on a stud in the middle.
While it was apart, I just fed the new ribbon down the tube and into the motor. I then wound the excess into the "cartridge". A little like installing a new rope on a lawn mower.

It works fine right now, goes up and goes down.

I've still got to put the trim and speaker cover back on, plus the slide track for the cargo shade.

I assume the seats will be out before removing the bread box? If not, stop and remove unless you have the back of a 12 year old!
One tip for the bread box, use a good strong flashlight to shine up into the rear area. Those nuts are very hard to locate with just a regular work light.

Very possible! Suspension parts act a lot different when reverse torque is applied. Plus, there is more torque applied in reverse simply from the much lower gear ratio.
Think how much wheel hop there was in the movie Bullitt when McQueen had to back up during the chase scene!

Just curious, where is the location of that single wire in your first picture?
That wire almost looks like the EST wire. Looks to be light brown/tan with a black stripe?

That wire actually splits out of a large harness just below the brake booster and towards the valve cover. It's not going to be a long loose wire all alone.
Here's another picture that might help if the link works.

Just a suggestion on the brake light, check the E-brake contact "spring". I spent about 4 hrs a few years ago with mine and it was the contact. On mine it's just a small piece of sprung steel to complete the circuit.

Actually VATS does control starter engagement, there is a starter enable relay under the hush panel drivers side. Pump will run, injectors will not fire.
Do you have a spare key? Try that if you do.
But like Andy said, check connections anyway.
Could possibly be the neutral safety switch.

That was an expensive "Oh crap" moment I'm sure!

I'm actually starting to think there are no major differences in most of these aftermarket parts. As long as the price range is about the same, they are all off shore products with some being assembled here and some not.

Any way, I'm just going to get Moog 231 uncoated and be done with it!

Looking at Timken hubs, price is decent and easy to find.
