Here’s the first installment of “progress” pics. I didn’t do a lot of wrenching this weekend. I tore down the motor a little more in preparation for sending the block out for machining.

And I did a Krylon Special on the under-hood section of the frame:

9.1:1 is about as high as I'll get with flatties and 115cc combustion chambers. I'm pretty sure I don't want to go domed again. I'm happy with 9.1:1. As it is, I was probably only squeezing 8.6:1 before.

Not sure on the cam specs yet (somewhere around 230's duration at .050, and ~.550" lift). Chris is waiting for me to make my final decision on displacement and compression.

The heads are already gasket matched on the intake, plus I bought the CNC-ported combustion chamber option.

Yeah, that's another variation I use. And don't get me started, it really doesn't take much more than that to get me on the phone with one of my favorite vendors or local builders; just ask Andy!

But seriously, I will actually be obstaining from touching the slushbox during this current downtime. It's a TH400 that was reportedly built using B&M fare and set up for 1/4 mile duty. Either way it will suffice for now.

Eventually (read: October/November timeframe), I will be doing some form of overdrive: either a GVOD added to this tranny or a new TKO600. If I go with the former, I will have the TH400 visited to ensure it's readiness. If I go with the latter, I will likely need to rework the tunnel, which means it will be a good candidate for being a project to execute in concurrence with other body work (and paint), which is my winter goal...

If you're anything like me...

Your car ends up looking like this:
Resized Image

Your engine ends up on a stand (hmmm, I wonder what's in those white boxes behind the motor???):
Resized Image

And all your parts end up in a pile like this:
Resized Image

But the good new is...
Stuff like this:
Resized Image

...gets replaced with stuff like this:
Resized Image

And heads like these (80's era GM "peanut port" iron heads):
Resized Image

...get replaced with heads like these (Brodix RaceRite Oval Ports):
Resized Image

I'm now three (maybe four) weekends into this, and who knows how much my $8 valve spring has cost me so far in actual dollars. But I sure have been suffering a bad case of "While-the-motor-is-out" symdrome.

Besides the top end, I think I'm about to pull the trigger on a new camshaft to go with the heads, a custom grind solid flat tappet from Chris Straub.

And also on my shopping list is a new rotating assembly: 4.25" stroke Callies crank, forged SRP +.060" flat top pistons and forged rods. What's that add up to you ask? In the end, I'm hoping for 9.1:1, 496cid. And somewhere around 550hp/600lb-ft.

If I can keep busy wrenching a little every weekend, plus keep my side work bringing money in, I hope to have my Chevelle back on the road by mid- to late-August. Hopefully, this all goes according to plan and I can keep this thread alive with progress pics over the next few weeks (if you're at all interested). Well, enjoy for now.

I hadn't spoken to Frank (Jr.) in a year or so. He and I have been good friends since the 9th grade. I just saw this earlier. The AP got the spelling of the family name wrong, so I was hoping it was someone else.
I just called Frank (Jr.) and he has confirmed this was indeed his father.

Frank Sr. was a real nice man, very loving. He, and his whole family, have always treated me as their own.
R.I.P. Frank.

California man killed by train after being drugged, robbed in Italy
The Associated Press
Article Last Updated: 05/26/2008 10:00:49 AM PDT

ROME - A California tourist was killed by a train as he walked on the tracks in a daze after he drank a cappuccino laced with drugs and then was robbed, railway police said today.

Frank Phel, 74, whose hometown was not disclosed, died early Friday at the suburban Tiburtina station, police official Giovanni Piccolantonio said.

The suspected robber, a 54-year-old Italian man who was arrested Saturday, had chatted with Phel and his wife before fetching them cappuccinos at a local cafe and then adding a mix of drugs including sleeping pills, Piccolantonio said.

"This man approached these two tourists and earned their trust, and then offered them two cappuccinos with drugs," Piccolantonio said.

The robbery was filmed by security cameras at a nearby cafe, Piccolantonio said. Footage from other cameras also showed the man stumbling near the tracks, where he ended up by accident.

Phel and his wife, who was briefly hospitalized after the incident, had just completed a cruise in the Mediterranean and were going to Hungary by bus, Piccolantonio said.

Phel's wife went to Hungary, where her husband was born, after being released from the hospital.

The U.S. Embassy in Rome did not have an immediate comment on Phel's death.

This was Frank Sr. at his son's birthday March 2005.

BTW, the date is June 11.

I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again… Powered correctly, even one 8W7 can be made to suffice in a Coupe, if you’re really short on space.

“Arc Audio”, you say? Hmm…

Good luck!

It's IFS. The lower mount is a plain T-bar running through what looks like a delrin bushing. The upper is a spherical joint, though I wouldn't call it a heim, per se, as it's not a perpendicular joint.

Anyway, I've been talking to my vendor and considering some geometries I measured. It looks like the spring was too short for my application and/or did not provide enough spring rate (650 lb/in). So, I may have inadvertently overcompensated by placing too much pre-load.

What's even more amazing is that I didn't even know it was busted until we got it up in the air. My brother had complained to me that the ride was harsh, even mentioned that it "bangs hard" on bumps. I figured he just wasn't used to the stiffer suspension. From the looks of it, the sides of the coils were suspending the car to some degree. When I drove it (for the first time in several weeks) down to the alignment shop, it was maybe one mile down two easy streets.

I'm finally going to work on my rear suspension today.

For most of you that don't know (me), I'm working on my 1971 Chevelle Convertible. I put in a very trick "Pro Touring" suspension/brakes up front a few months ago, but the rear coilovers have been sitting in the trunk ever since.

I hope to finish this weekend, hopefully with time to spare to go fishing!

Cheers everyone!

Here's the short story of what happened:
Resized Image

The truncated version of the long story:
1. I got my rear suspension apart.
2. I realized the coilovers I have require more fabrication than anticipated.
3. I didn't have the stock material to fab up what I want, so back together goes the rear suspension.
4. The car still needs an alignment, though. So I bring it down to my local shop.
5. Mechanic gets my car upon the rack and finds the busted shock pictured above!
6. I'm too lazy/busy this weekend to tear into the front suspension. So I pay my mechanic to install my original springs and some off-the-shelf stock-style KYB's.

I called the vendor that sold me the suspension parts. He's going to contact the manufacturer of the coilovers. It's a fairly new suspension system (to the market) comprised of parts from different manufacturers. So the three of us need to figure out what went wrong with my combination of car, wheels/tires, and suspension choices. Other guys have successfully used these coilovers, but not necessarily in a full-accessoried, big block-laden, convertible.

So, I'm out a few hundred bucks for my mechanic's labor and the KYB's. But my vendor is going to take care of me as far as replacement coilovers are concerned. He's a standup guy and is really helpful before, during, and after the sale.

On the bright side, though it was cold, breezy, and a little choppy, I did manage to fish yesterday. We kept three sand bass and caught/released several sad dabs, croakers, mackerel, etc.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Cheers-
Nelson V.

Obviously, I’ve also added a new hood, and if you peek closely you can spot the electric cut-outs. Also recently added, but not visible: Flowmaster 3” exhaust (header to tailpipe) w/ Pypes 3” oval stainless tips, Hydratech Hydroboost.

Still in boxes in the garage: Classic Auto Air system, Alston/Chassisworks rear coilovers, Currie rear arms. After I get all the rest of my goodies in, I get to tear the car down to send her in for paint. Wish me luck!

Be it known, while you and Bastet were out gallivanting on the Right (err, wrong?) Coast, I've been in the greater L.A. area for three wekkends straight. And with the C5 no less.

This ought to get me invite to do something next weekend.

[I actually figured this out (finally) a few days ago. But I've been too busy/lazy/tired/forgetful to post an update.]

(The other day) I pulled the car into a stall, with my foot on the brake placed the shifter in park, then reached for the key to shut off the ignition. Just as I placed my fingers on the key (but before I could grasp and turn it) the seat started to move rearward toward egress.

Suspecting a bad ignition switch/key cylinder, I drove the car on an clear, open road and jiggled the key in the ignition and voila! The seat started to move back. And yes, this was while driving down the road (slowly)! Apparently, I have a bad ignition lock cylinder.

It's amazing there isn't some safety consideration to lockout the "auto-seat-egress-position" feature when the car is not in park/neutral (i.e. fail-safe). Fortunately, the seat doesn't move too rapidly, but it can be dangerous at the wrong place/time.

So, until I can replace the lock cylinder, it's now: Seat Easy Entry = OFF!

I was sitting in the drive-thru waiting for my food last night, engine idling in drive, foot on the brake, when the seat began to move backward into the egress position.
It was kinda spooky. Anyone encounter this? I’ve never had this happen before nor heard of it either (but then I didn't really look).

Today I have a "Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing" class taught at the office from 8am until noon. A UCLA Leadership class from 4:30-8:00pm. Somehow I have to squeeze in 8 hours of work in between.
Wish me luck.

Hey everyone.

Half-pound pastrami burger and a pint of Sierra Nevada has me... :sleepy1:

At the expense of possibly annoying the Webmasters, may I just say...

Oh, and have a great weekend. Looks like I'll be farther South than usual this weekend (again). I gotta move those rear coilovers a little forward and lower from where they are now.

Funny - we have cocktail hour with NelsonV every Wednesday! If anyone else wants a Heineken, you may have to fight Nelson for it!
I thought perhaps SpectatorRacing was referring to that, until I realized he wasn't a Left Coaster.

Anyway, Hello everyone.

Oh, and where's the Chevelle section. ;)
