Wow thanks for the info. I was quoted 50 a sq for the contertops and I can get the lowes special cabinets for an average of 200. I can lay tile as I already did my bathroom. The back splash we do want to do a tile setting. The lighting we are going to do 4 recessed and 2 drop lights as well as a Chandler and one other fixture light. I want to do tile in the work area of the kitchen and the snap stuff everywhere else. We already have a fairly new fridge so we are thinking about cutting costs by going with that white theme and buying a new dishwasher and stove. Otherwise I would be buying a new fridge and stove. Its alot to conceder when doing this. Is there a way to refinance the home to do this? I am already at 90% value and I know they wont refinance me with a regular mortgage.

You can get a home equity line pretty easily. They give you a checkbook and you write checks as needed. Be careful with it though.

I walked in the bank and walked out in 1/2 hour with a $250K loan one point under prime... You only pay on the amount of the checks you write.

Have you seen the cement counter tops? Yes, I said cement. They are cheap, durable, easy to fix, and look pretty good.

I've had migraines for about 5 years - fortunately Imitrex works well for them, but I found a better solution for me last year. A friend recommended this book to me, and it was the best $20 I ever spent:

http://triggerpointbook.com/

The theory here is that a great deal of pain (of all kinds) is "referred pain", originating in the muscles. I discovered that in my case, my headaches are caused by a little knot in my shoulder, and that quite often, I can simply massage them away - I did so this morning, in fact. I was absolutely stunned the first time it worked. And recently, I had a stiff neck for several days, so I finally cracked open the book, found the spot that was likely to cause it, and got rid of it within minutes.

Anyway, I highly recommend this book - in an age of outrageous medical costs, it is a blessing to have something that you can at least try, for free.

That is great news that her pain is gone, and great that the surgery went well. Take good care of her during the recovery process.

There are all kinds of mortgages out there. On my current house, my mortgage was $0 down 2 years ago and I refinanced it after one year to a loan with 90% equity. I have a small PMI, but oh well. My mortgage guy did it all, he's awesome, so you just have to find what fits. You might get a slightly higher rate if you have less equity, but it's out there. It is harder with all of the mortgage problems lately. Have you considered a home equity loan from the bank? They are usually a higher rate, but since you already have $10,000 to put in, it wouldn't hurt you too bad. And since it is a home improvement, the interest is tax deductible. Just a thought.

BTW, I just called my mortage guy last week to refinance because of the rate drop, though, and he told me that even though the fed has dropped rates 1.25 points in the last two weeks, mortgages didn't go down much! What is that? I guess it's business regulating itself without the government. Oh well. Good luck with that.

As far as investments in your home go, kitchen remodeling is one of the best places to spend money (assuming you don't build it like the Taj Mahal).

It's unfortunate that there aren't more contractors out there like Rex_Ruby - my father-in-law was like that, too. A lot of them just don't care if every joint is perfect, or if the walls are smooth - they don't live there, and don't have to look at it every day. Craftsmanship in this country seems to have taken a real nosedive over the past several decades.

Me and the wife are thinking of hireing out to get this done. We do the demo and have someone come in while we go on vacation to do the cabinets, walls, and ceilings. Then we come back, wire up some new lights, do the floor and its done.

So now you can afford the work and a vacation? What changed?

Seriously, I would NEVER leave someone to work in my house if I'm not around. Two reasons:

1. They do shit work if you're not all over them
2. I don't trust anyone and they could be thieves, or their friends could be thieves.. Why would you want total strangers to know that you're not going to be home? That's just me.

I have a real problem with the above statement, there is great, good and bad in every profession.
There are great contractors out there and I am one of them.

1. If you are all over me I am more likely to make a mistake. My level of work is the same no matter who is around or watching and I never mind the customer watching. I have to know in my heart I did the best possible job. (and I do)
2. Every project that is longer than a week I have a key to their house and on the average 50% of the time I am the only one there. Stealing something never enters my mind, I work for all I have and plan to get.

I know there are bad ones out there BUT there are good ones too.

Let me add this: I am not cheap. I expect to get paid well to do what I do. But everyone that enters into a contract with me gets more than they paid for and are always estatic about the end result.

TO: red_johnny:
Budgetary costs for a kitchen:
$300 a cabinet - medium grade ($600 high end)
$80 sf for solid conter tops
$300 under mount sink
$200 faucet
$100 misc plumbing
$1500 up for appliances

Flooring, the snap together products are nice and fairly easy but nothing feels as good as a nice ceramic tile floor. Tile isn't that hard to do. ALSO consider a tile back splash adds wow factor.

Lighting hard to put a price on it w/o knowing what you need.

I don't go as far as GA but I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have, email me at jphomerepair@comcast.net for my phone number!

Hey man, don't take it the wrong way. I did say it was hard to find a good contractor, not impossible.

I do agree, there are some good ones out there, however, like you said, good ones aren't cheap.

I am sure you have seen some of the hack work out there, and I am sure you've had to correct a lot of it.

As to being "all over you" I would check your work from time to time during the day until I am convinced you are competent. It used to be I didn't have the money to pay people, then when I had the money I wasn't happy with the quality of work I'd get. That goes for almost anything. Cars, houses, boats, whatever, Seems there's just too many hacks out there.

I'd spring for better quality parts, and install them myself. Like I said, cabinets are not that hard if you take your time, measure carefully, ect...

If you find a group let me know...

I'm on my fourth and likely my final setup. Headers, H pipe, corsa mufflers (no resonator). I have been through dynomax ultra flo, flowmaster and complete corsa. To be honest the best exterior sound came from the dynomax but I usually drive from inside the car so I'm sticking with corsa. They really should offer just the muffler.

I'd be more than glad to. The problem is, his name became "a name that is not to be spoken of" over there a long time ago. I don't know that they ever outright banned him but they threatened to (he told me that himself) because people were always bringing his name up on the forum when the question of where to get brackets was raised. He only made them as a sideline but they were top-notch pieces and sold for much less than the name vendors' brackets. At some point he moved to another state too and so may have just quit making them after that, I don't know. The bottom line is I haven't heard anything about him in two or three years now.

I agree. This is one of those questions where there are an infinte amount of opinions. You could spend a year trying to figure out which is the best and still not come up with an answer.

The factory fill for the Corvette is Mobile 1. A couple of years back they had an issue with changes that needed to be made (I believe) as per federal regulations? That got cleared up as far as I know. Also, mobil 1 tends to thin out more than, lets say, Castrol, so you may notice a decrease in oil pressure. Not really an issue either.

Bottom line, it may be a new engine, but its not a Nasa rocket. I haven't personally heard anything bad about Royal Purple except for "haters," who had an uncle, who had a brother, whose friend was running it, and he had a problem. In my opinion though, the best alternative is my first choice, Castol Syntec, followed by Mobil 1. Both have good reputations and both can be bought ANYWHERE over the counter for a reasonable price, which is important at times. I like to change my oil every 3000 Miles or 3 months on my V8's and on the V6 every 5K.

Watch what you use for break in, when we put the new engine in the C3 I had put Rotella in to break it in and was told that, that was the wrong oil to use, for reasons I can't remember. I think I was told Chevron 10-40 was a better choice.

Another good point,

I would not advise this mod without a ratchet shifter. You could potentially damage the car, or worse, crash. My friend has an LS1 GTO he insists on doing this mod to with the stock shifter. I tried to tell him of the dangers; refuses to listen. Hopefully he won't get shifter happy and pull the stick a little to hard.

Like I posted in the other thread I had in regards to my steering column stuff.
Well I got my parts coming. The guy that did this column back in mid 90's has all the parts, and is a good person. Anyways, the part the dealer has is in the mid 300's. Well he sold me that part and the support for 200.
I am going to modify the old one by having my machine shop I work at put some super wammy dammy bushing material, so if anything wears it will be the pins, not the housing. They said they can drill out the housing and support, secure the bushing in so the pin is snug, like its suppose to be.
So, when this happens I will do a write up with pics etc.
The housing and support are just pot metal. So, we'll see.
Jeffvette, I am sorry if you are sitll looking, but I found a dealership here that will give just as good prices as Chris May. We shall see

Tommy, there is a secondary positive effect to the bad job numbers report of this morning...oil dropped to 88.65 per barrel.

Only $38.65 to go before it gets down to where we would all be happy. I doubt that it will ever happen.

Although I do agree with you, this set is only 15 months old or so, and already out and fwiw, I don't watch a lot of tv to begin with. So my price per day is quite high. Still, a set should last WAAAAAYYYYY longer than this. I've researched online and have found this to be a very common problem with my particular model......
Waiting on call from service center 4th day now....

When in doubt call them again. Ask for their supervisor. I had problems with AT&T having our cell phone bills messed up for 3 months since we changed plans. The sales rep would not return my calls, customer support was no help. So I didn't pay the bill. I knew someone would call me.

Sure enough a young lady did and I told her I didn't pay the bill intentionally. I told her if we could fix the problem that day I would be happy to give her a credit card number. She started on the trail we as consumers have to go through. I made it clear she would have to get someone in charge who could fix that day. She got disconnected 3 times, got passed on to about 4 different people. I told her she was going through what consumers had to go through. She agreed it was ridiculous. Finally we got hold of a guy who said he would fix it. He kept calling me back with all the troubles he was having. I gave him a solution which I thought should work and guess what. IT DID. He said what a great idea. He called me back again and said the problem was fixed. I called the original girl back and gave her a credit card number.

If they had gone with my solution in the beginning on how to bypass the system it would have been fixed 3 months ago. Damn, you have to walk them through their own system.

A loss of exceptionally talented and intellegent professionals.

Yes, their lives were lived on the edge, but it doesn't lesson the loss.

I use soda, then rinse with water, and then spray the connectors with that red stuff.

I head them talking about it on the radio today. It was a real tragedy. They paid a price to make it safer for the future astronauts.

I'll take some pictures this weekend when I pull them off (along with the intake, heads, etc.).

IIRC there was a write up somewhere on the net, don't remember if it was CF, here or somewhere else. Had pictures and everything.

Great news. Back surgery can always be tricky. Glad to hear it went well.

The wife had her surgery today. The doctor said he took out 3 big size pieces of the herniated disk. One was larger than a peanut M&M and the other 2 were about the size of peanut M&M's. He also removed numberous small pieces. The pain going down her leg to her foot is gone. She only has some numbness and tingling which should gradually go away.

Overall, it was a successful operation.

I have been at bragg for 13 of my 14 years in service, I used to run Ardenes alot back in my 82nd days, now I stay away from that road when I run.

I am currently deployed and I stumbled on this C4guru site during my many searches for vette troubleshooting. there is a bunch of good info here. Now I can't wait to get back to my car and get it running.

The baking soda is the stuff, follow procedures as stated so far, especially the heavy flushing to make sure no traces are left in isolated areas to cause problems. Do avoid coating with Vaseline or any other petroleum product though. It's not a good conductor and over time may seep down between the terminal and the post. And I know, our cars generally have the side posts (though not mine) but problems can still occur. Pick up a can of the protective, spray on coating for this purpose, it's good stuff even if a bit messy.

I read an article complete with photos awhile back on changing out the LT-1 injectors. Can someone post a link to this article? Thanks. Later! Frank

Oaklands, I'm just down the road from you. I suspect that I'll go again this year to the cruise in if only to see some old friends. Theres several C4 owners in this area but we are still greatly outnumbered by the C5/6 owners.

Sounds good. No problem if we are outnumbered. I am just as happy with my 88 w/41k on it as they are their cars. I have a lot less invested

I have a feeling that someone in that line of work can't be surprised or regretful in the least for the fate they meet.

But it is terribly tragic for the families, and really all the kids that are mesmerized by those exploits. I remember watching the challenger disaster unfold as a kid.
