Can the door be opened and closed? Did you sight down the bottom side looking from behind the front wheel to the back?

If the sill looks good, then I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Welcome to the best C4 forum on the internet! We certainly hope to see you regularly. It sounds like you're getting an awesome car.

I will be honest, I don't go over there very often anymore.

I lurk from time to time... late last week, someone was asking about cats, and the 3rd post was about "you don't need them," and not a single person challenged that.

They are slipping into a pit of intellectual mallaise... they get what they pay for... You ban the technically knowledgeable, then you get morons expressing opinion based upon less then good information. I feel sorry for the newest members, searching for insight, not hyperbole.

Dear all

First off - please forgive me if I have posted this in the wrong part of the forum (this is the 1st C4 online group I have joined and am still getting my feet) Must say I do really like the sites design and features (well done to the developers!)

I have a general question about a C4 Corvette I am picking up next week (this is my first Corvette and can't stop thinking about it .... time has never moved more slowly). She is a 1989 Coupe (Dark Metallic Blue which seems to be a rarity in and of itself) I am also very fortunate that the dark blue Leather Interior is showcase as it the engine compartment is immaculate (you could eat your dinner off the block - it really is that clean).

The gentleman whom owned this car before me really babied her (only put 5000 KM on per year from new). So I really am pleased with my purchase - BUT I HAVE ONE NAGGING CONCERN (and I don't mean my girlfriend - lol)

You see the passenger door was hit (I believe by a motorcycle in a parking lot) - it was hit hard enough that the door needs to be replaced but not so hard that the impact didn't even break the glass. All seems perfect other than this.

So the guy whom is selling me the car is also fixing it. I have asked him how the frame is as a result of such an impact - he assured me as he has worked on vettes for 20 years that the door impact DID NOT effect the frame in any way. He went on to assure me that in order to road certify the car the frame HAS TO BE STRAIGHT - or he will not be able to align the tires ... does this sound right to you guys?

So I realise life is a crap shoot and sometime you gotta buy a ticket to ride - based on my gut feelings I have already bought this car.... and wonder if any of you good people might be able to offer me some insights on just how the C4 frame would have taken such a door impact (I really am hoping you'll be able to re-assure my faith in GM's sound engineering and that all will be fine)

Also - are there any external tips you might be able to give me so when I pick it up next week I can try to do a visual inspection and test drive. As soon as I get it I am booking her in at GM for a through checkout ... I imagine they will be definitive on my situation.

Hopefully not the owner of a 2 ton pile of fibreglass
Kev

(many thanx)

Just 2 Cents. I think you need a push rod length checker. I don't think you can adjust the valves when it is running unless it is pre 70. It will idle fast and squirt oil everywhere.

Ok, so I got back home Sat . night. Had a great time gambling , drinking, and getting back to my room round 3:30 every morning. I'm a light weight by Las Vegas standards. The simulator was the best I've been on, It gives you the feeling of excelleration and lateral G's. The visual was a little less than most PC's. It cost $20.00 for 5 min, or you can buy it for $15,000 and have it sent home. I do have to mention the selection of beautiful Hookers on the street. Classy good looking, expensive, and fun bunch of girls if you can afford them. I dont have a service manual for a 92, so im not sure what that code is yet. If its in module 9 its got nothing to do with the distributor i know that much.

ABS/ASR is the antilock brakes and traction control.

Looking at the search as it now is, it looks like no, there isn't. You can make it text-only exclusive but not subject-only exclusive. But with new software coming, it's likely to be updated and improved as will so many other functions, I'm sure.

I agree, the ball joint pivot points will be tricky to measure. I think I may be able to rig something up that will hopefully provide adequate accuracy.

Also where the spring contacts the lower a-arm. But if you are going with coilovers the spring contact point will be the shock mount, right?

I think this is a very interesting project.

Can you import Inventor or ACAD files into Solid Works?

Hmm Well for one, what's that mean lol and two, I don't think I've had any trouble with that

I figured if the lights were on, there would be a code to go with it. Where are my codes!? lol

My dad said he might have an OBDI scanner so I'm going to try that also tomorrow.

The images still seam to be on my CF homepage, but they don't link anymore?
Haven't logged in for awhile...
logged in and now they seam to have come back up

I did lay the rear out in solidworks and had started on a design with an adjustable control arm bracket, but lets just say I lost the files during an "unplanned" carear change
Haven't had time to do much with that since.

P.S. I did my measuring with machinist rulers crawling around on the gagrage floor, just to get the general layout. I wouldn't be machining parts based on them ... without verification ...
This picture is a BIG help.

Combine it with this one

And a lot of the rear suspension behavior can be done.

Using the paper clip trick to get to diagnostic mode.

I only got on code "H63". I know the H stands for "History" (old) but what's the 36 for? It was in Module 9 if that's important.

My "Service ASR" light, "Service ABS" light, and "ABS Active" light are all lit right now (have been since I've bought the car). I know the ABS and ASR are tied into each other in a way but does my code have anything to do with the traction control?

While I know that CF is still a big place, any quick scan through C4 tech lately reveals reflects a conspicuous absence of names I recognize. I can't help but wonder about the opinions and possible concerns of various people in the hierarchy regarding this. It's obvious some don't care or at least oblivious to it. Still there are surely some who do. The factors that have caused this are old news and certainly I don't want to see them rehashed here. These are just things that I can't help but think about when I look in over there now.

It doesn't make any sense to put in a HU without new speakers in these cars, especially if you have Bose.

If you have non-Bose and you insist on keeping the factory speakers, then you will need to:

- extend the antenna cable from the rear storage compartment to the HU.

- run new speaker wire from the HU to all the speakers (or you could extend the factory speaker wire from the rear storage compt but that would be just plain silly

- find appropriate sources in the dash for power, or extend the power from the rear storage compt (again that would be silly...)

- perform the necessary mod to prevent the SYS light from flashing (see FAQ)

If you have Bose, then you also will need line level converters to convert the line-out from your HU to an appropriate level for the Bose amps.

OTOH, when combatting false knock from RR or other mods, a little thread tape helps to desensitize the KS.

I just got off my arse and dug up my FSM book II - that one is heavier than book one! I hate to pick it up.

Anyhow to answer my own question and any others that follow this thread.

FSM says in NOTICE:

Do not apply thread sealant to sensor threads. Sensor is coated at factory and applying additional sealant will affect the sensor's ability to detect detonation.

Tighten to 14 lb. ft.

The end goal is to put the geometry into a suspension analyzer.

Something like this:

http://www.mitchellsoftware.com/prod01.htm
Resized Image
Resized Image

I have SolidWorks, and that may handle what I need to do.

What I need measured is geometries that are critical to how it moves.
ie) center to center distances, but not thicknesses.

If it would help I can make drawings showing what I need.

Items like the dogbone bushing center-to-center lengths should be easy to measure.

On the a-arms for instance, I need the center of the bushing hole to the center of where the ball joint pivot moves, which will be hard to measure. I need to know where the rollbar is connected, where the spring hits, where the shock is connected. These will tell me what spring rates to get.

This is no small task, but when it's done, I'm hoping to come up with some simple solutions to some of the handling issues we have.

I got two new Knock Sensors to put in today. From what I understand I don't need to put anything on the threads, as they come out of the box with a red thread compound or paint already on them. Is this correct?
Any affirmation on that assumption?
Thanks

The first NCRS regional of the year is in Kissimmee, FL this week from the 9th to the 12th. If past is prologue, there will be some nice original C4s there, some local and some 'snowbirds' from up north.

More information is at the Florida Chapter site here:

I saw him at the House of Blues in Chicago about five years ago just before I moved down to Florida. There was a mounted fifty caliber machine gun on one side of the stage, a statue of a very large white bear with glowing red eyes on the other and Ted made his entrance holding a crossbow atop a live buffalo. At one point in th show he was screaming at the audience to quit wasting their money on drugs and alcohol and instead, spend it on ammo. What a show...
