Send some 243 (c5z06 heads) off to Ai and have them ported and you get great numbers as well with better velocity.

(I'm refusing to quote the whole thread because I think folks will kill me )

In the end, you guys are so much more serious than we are.

We live for the "Corvette lifestyle" and we happily drive our either completely stock or 99% stock motors (which are still 95th percentile motors compared to everybody else out there). I look at the "daily driver" LS3 with 436 bhp versus my flighty L98 with 230 bhp and I have to laugh. But ...

... we remain very interested in what would happen if our motors were really pushed.

A) I totally believe you.

B) We're proud new owners of an LS3.

C) It will never be raced.

D) I'm just curious.

The question: at what kind of RPMs do those big valves cause problems? Can you tell me why?

They are fine up to 6800 or so rpm with STOCK springs. Beyond that better springs/rockers are advised to control the valvetrain events better.

Plus I am not a fan of hollow valves

Those heads are also thin. So I do not like them with boost. Nitrous is more forgiving but I would want to aftermarket castings for boost.

Very educational - thank you!

I was at a conference in downtown Dallas about five years ago and was walking between two hotels (Dallas is a lot more spread out than it looks in pictures).

I walked down Houston Street and the streetscape started to look vaguely familiar, but I couldn't place it. To the right I saw a small park and an underpass.

Oh.

Dealey Plaza.

I look up and, yes, there's the Texas School Book Depository (buildings get new uses - it's now the Dallas County Administration Building).

I've always been a doubter that Oswald acted alone, but I left that area a little less so. It's smaller and closer than it looks in pictures: to me that makes Oswald's shots from that sixth floor window a good bit more possible.

From today's chat thread:

The wife and I watched the "Chevy 100" special on Velocity last night. It was pretty good: lots of big names (Tony Stewart, Rick Hendrick, Funkmaster Flex, Jim Perkins, Guy Fieri, Jerry Palmer, Ed Welburn) but also lots of "normal" folks. They acknowledged the Corvair, which kind of surprised me - though they didn't mention the ugly stuff with Nader.

Good Corvette coverage, with all generations of the Corvette acknowledged.

For the 1985 (currently in the best shape that it's been since I purchased it in 2004):

1) Get the original antenna rebuilt and replace the service replacement.

2) Replace one (maybe all of them while I'm at it) of the bulbs in the digital cluster.

3) Recalibrate the parking brake to disengage more smoothly.

For the 2003:

1) Clean the undercarriage so Ivelis feels a little better about it.

2) Perhaps some new floormats - ah, the glamour.

For the 2012:

1) Drive it.

Good evening folks.

I had too many of my wife's excellent Manhattans last night - woke up hung over at about 7:00 AM, went back to sleep and woke up in far more civilized fashion around 11:00 AM.

I did get a chance to finally take Lauren out for her birthday ride. She started up nicely, but the newly rebuilt parking brake is touchy: very hard to disengage. Drove well, though - good torque.

Hey! He did drive Chevy's for a while - even won the Daytona 500 in a Lumina.

The short form: Ivelis was a member of the Dale Jarrett fan club for a little while (don't ask). One of the things you got was a license plate. When Lauren showed up, it was the only extra license plate in the house.

There was oil and so much dirt, which I was completely unprepared for - I brought no cleaning materials. I drove the few miles home from the pickup point in a completely unfamiliar car, with little visibility, badly worn tires, and horrible alignment. I didn't even know how to turn the lights on.

From "A 21st Century Road Trip", published in 2006:

"
Unlike GraceÂ’s near perfection, my other Corvette is most definitely a work in progress. Lauren, a 1985 coupe, was purchased over the Internet from Delon BMW in Salem in February 2004 after spending her entire life in Oregon. After having it shipped eastward across the United States and getting a handle on what the issues were, I started restoring it in earnest in the summer of 2004, just after having it judged for the first time. Restoration is definitely an iterative process, but every six months I can look back on obvious improvement and my scores in National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) Flight Judging have confirmed this impression.

Lauren is a classic example of buying the car you wanted when you were a teenager. Why the rather unusual color, you might ask, instead of the more popular red or black? For the record, that color is light blue metallic, and I have two reasons. Reason number one is that, when this version of the Corvette was new, many of the cover Corvettes on the automobile magazines of the day were this color. Reason two comes back to me: the first C4 Corvette I ever saw was light blue metallic. I worked part time at a Chevrolet dealership in the mid-80s and I’ll never forget seeing that car for the first time, headlights up, fancy new metallic paint with clear coat looking its best in the setting sun. A visceral moment for a fifteen year old — the exact point where my opinion of Corvettes changed from grudging respect (I was more of a Pontiac and BMW fan) to “I will have one of those some day.”

There’s one more thing I think you might be wondering — where does the name come from? Lauren is named after Lauren Hutton — a classy 1980s model.

I still have pictures of that trip down to Dover. I knew next to nothing about the car and it had issues. A part of me remains convinced that you headed out to California shortly thereafter to avoid becoming my live-in electronics specialist.

Found her on the internet at a BMW dealership in Salem, Oregon. Sent an inspection/appraisal service to look at it. What they sent me was actually a little tougher on the car than I would have been.

Bought the car for not too much money and had her shipped in a shared open trailer across the country (closed trailer costs would have close to what I paid for the car).

My beloved Lauren is 27 today, having come off the line on November 16th, 1984 (an early 1985).

64s fall through the cracks: not the first year, no disc brakes, no big block.

Thus, they are the easiest way to get into a mid-year. I could go for a nice convertible with a 4-speed. I'd even deal with the base L75, though the L76 or the L84 fuelie would be nice (I can't tell whether the pictured car is the L75 or L76).

$45k is not crazy talk - that's about #2 condition.

Tommy, that's quite a complement your friend gave you. Last week at P-T conferences, I had a mother of one of my students tell me some things about her son (that I had no idea about) and she told me that he doesn't have any respect for male authority figures ... any of them. Stems from problems with his father when he was younger (dad is no longer in the picture). Anyway, she said that he had asked her a question (male oriented), that neither she, her current hubby, grandma or grandma's hubby could answer, he said "That's OK, I'll ask Mr. Bachman at school tomorrow." Which may not seem like a big deal, but she said that, that say a terrific amount of respect he has for me. It nearly made me cry, that I have that kind of respect from a kid who doesn't give any to other male authority figure.

Funny how you turn around one day and that authority figure is you. It's like when my friends come to me for marriage advice and I have to suppress the urge to look behind me and see if there is someone else in the room.

Wow. It was only a couple of days ago that the local media here in Philadelphia started to mentioned that he was in hospice care in an apartment in the city ...

I can just see us in a couple of years, we'll have a "normal" tree, a car tree, and an engine tree ...

I love this idea. Maybe one year when I get away from the house tree I can have a car tree. Lord knows the 928 is gonna need one.

Thanks, Tommy. Do you have a recent update on the 928?

Good morning, all.

Foggy this morning in Philadelphia.

Got a lot of work done yesterday. Ready for today, but still in a bit of pain from yesterday's run.

My lovely/crazy/wonderful wife got the car tree up yesterday evening. I'll post a picture some time this evening.
