We're very happy with our Michelin Pilot Sport A/S ZP run flats on our 2003 convertible. They are notably quieter than the stock Goodyears, though to be fair the Goodyears are rated at 200 miles flat while the Michelins are only rated at 50 miles. Other than the shortened range, the only downside I see in the Michelins is that they don't break free as smoothly as the Goodyears in wet or uneven pavement.

I took a large nail in the driver's side front at about 15k miles on the Goodyears, with a resulting total loss of pressure. I backed off to 50 mph, put the hazards on, and drove straight to the dealer (about 10 miles). It sounded horrible and of course the DIC was yelling at me. The dealer saved the tire - we ended up getting another 20k or so out of the set (Ivelis had actually burned the rears more than the fronts ).

Folks who thinks any C5 with run flats is rough riding should try an early C4 Z51 with "normal" tires for comparison ...

Good morning, all!

Working from home this morning: a friend of mine is coming over with his truck to pick up my (completely undriveable) show tires and wheels for the 1985. He will be taking them out to the NCRS National for me, so that I don't lose huge amounts of points in that area.

Marcus, I concur with Tom, C5 and C6 coupes have huge amounts of storage space under that hatch.

The promised full disclosure:

Ivelis (my wife) ran a 26:42 chip time, good for a 8:36/mile split

I ran a 31:24 chip time, good for a 10:07/mile split.

So, she only beat me by 4:42 ...

Alright, I'll kick it off ...

... ran the 5k with my wife yesterday morning. It was hot and humid, so we weren't that fast, but I was reasonably pleased.

Back to work today - our fiscal year turned over on the 1st, so I'll be revising a bunch of pages and sending out various announcements. Busy day.

I hope everyone had a glorious 4th.

A glorious 4th to all!

My wife and are off in a couple of minutes to run a local 5k - they call it the Firecracker. We'll see how we do ...

... afterwards, back home to do some cleanup work in preparation for the (short) work week.

Good morning, all!

Dreary this morning in Philadelphia - grey, grey, grey.

Working at the University today and trying to clean up some odds and ends from the Wildwood Regional tonight. I'll be glad to close that out ...

Matthew, I share your feelings about lack of time.

I find myself starting to do this, too: ordering the same part twice because I forgot about ordering it the first time, keeping incorrect parts because they work, etc.

Anyhow, today has been a "preparing the Corvette for the national convention" day - trucked the 1985 to the local specialist for some stuff I can't do myself and shipping another set of show wheels out to Wheel Collision Center.

Interesting ...

... I've never heard of this happening with the solid top, but I guess there's a time for everything. My plexiglass top needed the same kind of help at about 21 years: bugs were flying in the front and splattering against the inside of the rear sail panel.

1985 L98, very stock

I have a new (and noisy) serpentine belt. It replaced and old (and noisy) serpentine belt. The new serpentine belt was reversed about 100 miles ago, which temporarily made the noise go away. It's back, though driving for a while does seem to quiet it at least somewhat.

Any thoughts on how to permanently quiet it? Someone mentioned taking a look at the tensioner, but I wouldn't even know where to begin.

So, I did what has to be the easiest thing in the C4 Corvette engine compartment and swapped in a proper AC Delco service replacement PCV valve for a no-name valve that was probably the second one installed in the car.

I started the car and everything seemed as normal, though I think the the idle was a little smoother.

Should I notice any difference? I notice that a PCV valve is part of some L98 tune-up kits.

Good morning and Happy Memorial Day, all!

Off shortly to the memorial commemoration my father (Captain, United States Navy, Retired) runs in Ardmore. Than over to my parents for the traditional Memorial Day spread.

Worked on cleaning up the garage during the break in the racing yesterday afternoon: found a bunch of parts I forgot I had. Hmmm ... should clean up more often!

[1985, very stock]

Specified oil for the 1985 Corvette is 5W30 and would have been conventional ("dino"), not synthetic. In the mid-1980s, no brand was yet specified.

Under my ownership (from 47k to the current 69k) the car has received mostly dino with some Mobile 1 synthetic. The questions:

1) Should I be using dino, blended/hybrid, or synthetic?

2) Is there any advantage to using one of the high mileage oils as I close in on 70k?

3) Do folks have vendor preferences?

Matthew,

Sorry, I missed your question in the excitement.

In the ramp-up to the performance verification, there became a certain point where I had to stop messing with things and that's why I didn't pursue the PROM/BCC further.

I might give this another try at some point later in the year.

For NCRS reasons I won't even try to explain I need to replace my PCV valve. Is it just a simple disconnect/reconnect, or am I missing something?

Andy, it was rebuilt about three years ago.

You are correct that DNR equals Dynamic Noise Reduction - if I recall, it was a way for companies to avoid the Dolby licensing costs and still have at least some noise reduction.

Stock 1985 Bose system, everything else in the system functions perfectly

Symptoms:

1) loud and consistant switching noise when DNR switch is turned on or off, does not vary with system volume or signal source

2) no signal from signal source (radio or tape) when DNR switch is on unless volume is quite low

Not a problem that can be fixed with contact cleaner, all amp/speaker combinations work very well with DNR off.

Thoughts?

This is a big regional NCRS show. As of today (Sunday, May 15th), we have a total of 126 cars, including 79 flight judged Corvettes ranging from 1957 to 1996 and 18 performance verification attempts ranging from 1954 to 1993. We also have 12 display cars, one Founders entry driving a big block mid-year down from Canada (!), and one American Heritage sign-off coming over from England (!).

Admission is $10 per day, either Friday or Saturday. We're at the Wildwoods Convention Center, right on the boardwalk.

Good morning, all!

Dreary and rainy in the area today - the wife's BFF is at Dover, hoping they'll get the Sprint Cup race in.

We spent five hours yesterday hosting a "Packet Stuffing Party" for the Wildwood Regional. 233 registration packets and 127 car packets are done and on their way to Wildwood. A lot of paper ...

... today's a cleanup day for the problem registrations and a chance to spend at least a little time on the 1985.

To me grouting even sounds bad, but I know it has to be done when it has to be done.
