Axel,

Thanks! Can you give me an idea of where that picture is located on the chassis?

[Edit]

Never mind, I just read your caption...

[1985/A4/very stock]

[1000 miles out/no manuals on board/very few tools on board]

The fuel pump is not priming when the key is in the on position - this had been working fine. Now, there's no sound.

Thus, engine start takes far longer and sometimes takes more than one try. Engine runs as normal from that point on, however.

Any ideas? Problem is present in cold or hot start condition.

Sounds like your having a good time, and the weather in Missouri looks like it will be perfect for you.

I think I read that the group will be leaving Rolla on Sunday morning and heading north on US63? Where will you be meeting?

Would be cool to come out and take a look at some nice cars.

Greg,

We will be in Rolla on Saturday night. We're staying west of town - I'll get you the specific motels as soon as possible. The best time to see all the cars (if you can stand being up) will probably be around 7:45 AM Sunday morning - we roll out at 8:00 AM every morning and the tour leader does not like if we are late!

...we've been on the road for two and a half days now, starting from outside of Philadelphia, spending the first night in Front Royal, VA and the next night in Canal Winchester, OH (a half mile from McDorman Chevrolet). Tonight, we're in Georgetown, KY.

We're part of the Eastern portion of the road tour (there are ten separate tours). My 1985 is the only C4 in our small group right now, though we expect to pick up at least two more in Paducah, KY tomorrow evening.

We're traveling with the "slow/old" group - three solid axles and two mid-years. The faster group started with three C5s and a C6 and added a C6 Z06 this morning. We're joining one of the other tours tomorrow morning and that will add a bunch more Corvettes.

So far, I haven't had any unexpected problems with the 1985, despite the fact that we've put almost 800 miles on it - more than any other single trip we've yet taken. We've had to fix some loose plug wires on a solid axle, some leaking fuel lines on a mid-year, and solve a strange tire wear problem on a C5 - but everybody is still moving.

Major real difference for me - a change from 18-19 highway to 23-24 highway. My trip computer also agrees with my "actual" measurements: maybe the 1985 computer is too dumb to get confused...

I have a 2003 Anniversary Red convertible, which we have named Grace. The highlight of her career has been a 7,800 mile drive back and forth across the continental United States (out Route 66, up the Pacific Coast Highway, back "high and hard").

Andy,

That's what the Founders award is all about - it's an award for drivers and participators. There are some cars driving in the road tour that make my 1985 look young - we have a total of sixteen (!) solid axles, including three 1957s and four 1958s.

What differentiates us in Lauren is that we're doing the road tour without a "chase" vehicle - a lot of folks are following their classics in either a newer Corvette or a tow vehicle...

Normally, I would say no - but over the next three weeks we're going to do close to 3,000 miles in Lauren, so if we don't stall in that period I will be very happy...

3 years on the alternator, 1 year on the starter, 2 years on the plugs and plug wires, brand new rotor, cap is good.

Now on mine on very hot restarts, it sometimes stumbles for a bit. I blame that on injectors flooding the intake after shutdown and the computer chasing its tail for awhile until it clears up.

Does the engine feel healthy around 4500 rpms? Does it hit an early ceiling?

Healthy under hard acceleration up to around 4500 RPM - no early ceiling.

Quote:
Does the fuel pump give out a healthy hum when you prime it? Have you checked fuel pressure at hot idle?

The fuel pump hums nicely when I prime it. I have not checked the fuel pressure at hot idle - cold fuel pressure is good. This may not be related, but I'm pretty sure the fuel pressure sensor is bad - it spends most of its time maxed out at 80 PSI.

Quote:
Is your torque converter pulling the engine down too much? What does it idle at in park vs drive with your foot on the brake?

I think it's two or three hundred RPM down from park to drive, but don't hold me to that. I'll check.

I'll check...

Hello CC!

Restarts very quickly and cleanly after stalling.

Occasionally will have a slight stumble shortly before stalling, but about half the time there's no warning at all.

Andy,

Thanks for the response.

TB is clean as of a month ago (cleaned while putting in new injectors). IAC was set to original spec less than a year ago. Issue has been a constant for the four years I have had the car.

[early 1985/A4/3.07/very stock]

I get an occasional stall from the 1985 under these conditions:

1) After running for a while at highway speeds

2) Very slow or stopped

3) Warm conditions

Bulletin 85-91 (Minimum Idle Speed Revision) suggests simply increasing the minimum idle to 500 RPM from 400 RPM. Is it this simple or am I missing something else?

I'm seeing a lot of these, too - does anybody know what the reason is? I can think of three possible ones:

1) Cheap - though if you have a C1 or C2 to cut up, you probably aren't hurting for money.

2) Easy - maybe the TPI's specific connections make it easier or maybe the engine upgrade is being combined with a C4 chassis upgrade (see 1) ).

3) Pretty - people always love the runners and you can paint or chrome the engine to good effect.

I commute via train into downtown Philadelphia, but my wife did drive me to our local train station in the 2003 'vert (she's off Fridays in the summer).

We had the top down and the exhaust had that wonderful burble.

Anybody else marking this day by driving one of these amazing cars to work?

Good morning, all!

Lost power at home today, just as we were about to leave. Annoying, and now of course I'm wondering if it will be back on when I get home tonight...
