Weird business trip this week - going to Trinidad, apparently they have (had?) some oil money so want to upgrade communications infrastructure. Maybe I'll get some beach time.. (85 degrees there today :thumbright: )

Then next week off to Minneapolis for another business trip. Probably 85 degrees colder...

On a side note, found lots of little oil leaks on the car Saturday, the oil feed to the supercharger and a few loose oil pan bolts. plus the AIR fitting to the drivers side header was very loose, probably why the O2 was reading a little lean that side. Took her out this morning to go to the bank and the post office - car ran great!! (but D'oh!! MLK day, everything is closed. Stupid boy.)

Gym this morning, then getting my decks from the attic to practice spinning some of my old vinyl for my birthday party next week. Oh - and my son has finally saved enough money to think about upgrading his car (currently a 1996 240sx), so will be cruising some dealerships today looking at options.

Happy Sunday!

Replacing the valve cover gaskets on my 1992; ever since I installed the composite cork "trust me they are for racing, sir" gaskets it has leaked like a mofo. Back to rubber for me! Also have a small exhaust leak, need to replace gaskets and tighten the bolts. Also gonna inspect the front of the motor to make sure there is no oil coming from the front seals.. I suspect I may have blown them again...

Taking a short break this afternoon to go to the dog park, we have agreed to have a Mastiff as a house guest in March so it's 'introduce the dogs on neutral territory' time.
Wish me luck...

Happy weekend gurus!

Actually, I should be using $DA2 for 1992. I have just looked again and I dont even have the "idle steps" table, instead I have an IDLE RPM ADDER table. I have got to drop this topic now as I have some real work to do, so I'll probably come back to it over the weekend.

In the meantime, if anyone has a DA2 definition with all the fancy tables loaded (like IDLE DEADBAND), please let me know.

Alternatively, if anyone thinks I'm in over my head, please smack me and tell me to consult a pro..

OK guys, I'm looking at extracts from the following tables, and I have a couple of questions (BTW the car is a 1992 6-speed, looking at the bin using $DA3 loaded into TunerPro RT)

Target idle RPM vs coolant in Drive

116 950.00
104 1000.00
92 1050.00
80 1100.00
68 1200.00
56 1300.00
44 1400.00

target idle RPM vs coolant in P/N

116 37.50
104 0.00
92 12.50
80 25.00
68 50.00
56 37.50
44 50.00

Idle steps vs coolant temp

116 34.00
104 32.00
92 10.00
80 10.00
68 10.00
56 10.00
44 10.00

I'm assuming that the Park/Neutral table is irrelevant in a 6-speed?

Since my idle RPM is too low (about 750RPM), can I assume that I need more steps in my "idle steps vs coolant temp" table?

Thanks guys!

My cable clips are missing (have been since I got the car). They are the ones that clip the throttle cable to the fuel rail cover.

Does anybody have a part number for these?

Thanks!

On the topic of emissions, mine passed again last week. Given the level of mods and the amount of crap that I put out the rear end at WOT, I'm amazed at how clean it runs during the emissions test (I'm talking less than 10% of allowable levels!!). Luckily the new emissions station I use knows Corvettes, so I didnt have to teach them that:

1. ASR needs to be off (I had one station try and run the test off the rolling road, just revving in neutral. He said "you cant turn traction control off on corvettes". Tsk)
2. The e-brake is different than other cars, but still needs to be off ("excuse me, but the ebrake is still on, and you just drove my car around the building, onto the rolling road, and halfway into the test". tsk)
3. The car will get stuck on a standard ramp (Excuse me, why are all your staff trying to push my car back off that ramp?)
4. I do not have an air leak (that's the supercharger whine, idiot)

I usually dread the emissions experience, but the new station I use made it a very pleasant experience. Thanks, SpeedEmissions of South Cobb Drive, Ga !!

Yep - good suggestions, plan to check all that this weekend. I will probably go with Nitto 555's in the 315/35.. simply because I have them on the front and I have heard good things about them (not to start a tire thread :-)

So.. I recently noticed a strange behavior from the rear of the car when I 'get on it'. It's a kind of vibration, and almost feels as if the left rear tire is scrabbling for grip.

When it happens the rev limiter is pegged at 6000, so my theory is that I have some kind of wheelspin. However the ASR doesnt kick in (ASR seems to work fine if I'm aggressive on corners...).

Despite the problem the car accelerates well so I dont think I have a slipping clutch.

The only thing I can think of is that the rear tires are old now (replaced in spring 2002) and the rubber has gone hard - the tires only have 20k miles on them.

I am going to replace the tires and have a full wheel balance etc.. just wanted to see if you have any alternative theories.

Thanks Gurus!

The stock shifter has a true reverse lockout mechanism built into the base of the shifter and operated via a linkage to the lifting collar. I just looked at my old stock shifter and I dont see any reason why it cant physically be removed.

If you cut the shifter down you will get slightly shorter shifts than stock, but longer than the Hurst and much longer than the B&M.

Good luck!

Hey Brian, from the text :

"Therefore, it is important to be sure the car is running properly before entering PE mode, so that the desired WOT AFR is used and not a modified setting from the lower RPMs (seen more in detail below).".

Can you post the "more in detail below" stuff please?

Got my B&M Shifter install done.. and all I can say is "wow". It feels like shifting a proper race car. No buzzes or rattles, and it feels tighter than a noobs pucker on tail of the dragon.

I took a full set of photos for the install; in the meantime here are some before and after pics, showing the height of the shifters in nuetral and also the relative position in first gear.

I may even write a Tech Tip..

Shift on!!

I used the 'adjust the opposite valve' technique above, but with a small twist; In some cams there can be a significant overlap between the intake and exhaust valves, meaning that the exhaust may not be completely closed when the intake is starting to open. On my engine I had no idea of the cam specs.

So my mantra is "intake closing, exhaust opening", when adjusting lash, because it eliminates overlap issues. In other words, turn the engine until an intake is completely open, turn a bit further until it starts to close, then adjust the exhaust lash. Then turn until an exhaust is fully closed, turn a little further until it starts to open, adjust the intake lash.

As jsup confirmed, sequence is irrelevant!

Regarding BP gas; both my son and I have noticed that our cars seem to run better (stronger, better MPG) using BP premium vs using QT premium. Purely an anecdotal observation, no statistically relevant empirical data (although my son measured an extra 2-3 MPG using BP).

We both now use BP as a preference; I assume, therefore, that so far we have not encountered "10% Ethanol" at our local BP...?

Hi all,

1992 LT1, LT4 heads, stroked to 383 (apparently), blown to 12psi.

I am changing out the rings on the motor this winter. The original (full) engine build specs are a bit of a mystery, however I know the car has precisely a 4.0" bore and Probe LW40 forged pistons. The engine has low tension oil rings, so I need to get some standard ones on there to reduce my oil consumption.

Question is, what ring set to choose? The car is used once or twice a week to get to work, with occasional mountain runs and trips to the dragstrip 2 or 3 times a year.

My aim is reasonable compression, safe to 6400RPM, and great oil control!

Thanks!

I regularly attend drift events (as a spectator), and I think it is great to watch. I also enjoy watching Nascar, F1, NHRA, ALMS etc. Each has its own appeal; mainly horsepower, noise and skill.

I am not sure about any definition of 'sport', but I sure as hell would enjoy to participate in a competition to see who can get their car sideways with the most accuracy, duration, and smoke generation!

In fact, I'm working on a plan with my son to persuade the missus to let us get an old 240 purely for sideways competition...

I want to avoid yet another thread on B&M vs Hurst (Hursts are still available direct from B&M, by the way..). I have decided to go with the B&M since I actively want the higher effort, maybe notchy, racey feel.

I understand from various posts on other forums that there are some 'commonly known' modifications that improve the occasional buzzing / rattling noises and 'free play' of the B&M shifter. However I've been searching forums for 2 hours now and apart from some references to 'grinding' the shifter I cant see the exact info.

Does anybody have such info that can be posted here, or PM'ed to me?

Cheers,
Andy.

Anybody tried these? Does having a bigger penis give you more horsepower? or more drag?

(serious note) - I think I am wary of all opinions / comments / statements on the forums, which is why I often research a topic until I find concensus (and always try to spot and avoid 'group stupidity'). And so far this has proven fairly reliable. But.. I think my age (44) leads me to be more suspicious of false claims / opinions than someone in their 20's might be.

When I was younger I was educated that 'the written word reflects more on you than the spoken word, and the written word is more legally binding'. I think modern technology has relegated the written word (texts, forums, email) to having less value than the spoken word - how many forum posts would NEVER be said face to face?

Anyway - about that male enhancement...

Considering Rocker Saver Wheels - Opinions?

I occasionally take my 92 C4 convertible to work - no big deal except in our new office the approach ramp to the parking deck is at an extreme angle. The net is that no matter what angle of approach I try, the cross brace scrapes the ground.

I do have coilovers, and one option is to adjust the height a little for commuting (and then lowering for race days).

However, for a less time consuming solution I'm thinking of getting some of those C5 frame saver wheels (that are installed at the front of the car on the C5) and adapting them to install along the rocker frame (maybe where the cross brace bolts on).

Any opinions / experiences here?

Cheers

(Note - my experience is based on only 2 or 3 valve lash adjustments and lots of reading. I also suffer from the occasional so treat my comments with caution )

I suppose it depends on your setup and what type of lifters you have. At one end of the lash adjustment the valvetrain is all noisy, at the other end the car will idle like crap. *normally* I would say if the valvetrain is quiet and the car is idling nice, then go with it. However since I believe this is a new build - I suggest go and re-check...

Just curious - what's the practical difference between a conventional bearing and a bearing hub? I (successfully) did some work recently on the front bearing of my daughters 1998 grand cherokee, and I have no clue what type it is! Thanks

I suspect it will drain everything except the radiator and the lower radiator hose, plus maybe leave some in the upper hose(s). I'm not sure about siphoning. In my opinion, if you are going to pull the knock sensors its a trivial additional step to drain the radiator too.

How do you convert the cluster to orange on black?

Or are you saying just swap some of the parts out with your current cluster, except the tach?

How hard is it to find an early ZR1 cluster or tach?

Hmmm - good questions. I figured that there may be a way to paint / use decals to convert the cluster, but that may be a tall order. I saw someone on CF who converted all buttons etc and it looks like a real PITA.

I plan to use the whole cluster (there is a write-up on the net, it's a plug and play swap).

I hadnt thought about a ZR1 cluster, I dont know if its a direct fit.

I have a 1992 LT-1, supercharged, forged 383. It redlines at 6400; so I am just about to pull the trigger on a good, used LT4 Cluster (to get the 8k RPM tach display).

However, Understanding that there will be a mismatch between cluster color (white on black) and all other buttons / switches, I have three options.

1. Do nothing, live with the mismatch (hey, I already have white-on-black pod gauges, so maybe no big deal)
2. Convert the cluster to orange-on-black
3. Convert all the other buttons to white-on-black

I'd appreciate the collective wisdom on here, opinions welcome. It obviously would not be an urgent issue, but I would like to have the end-plan worked out before I install the new cluster.

Cheers

For what its worth I tried to get gauges that look as close to the stock gauges as possible - I painted the gauge bezels black too. Apologies for the poor photo! And this was the combination that Greg suggested - it is easy when tuning to instantly see boost and fuel pressure. The boost/vacuum is just 'T'-ed into intake vacuum piping (actually I have the 2-stage alky controller under the dash that is boost controlled, so T was easy there). The FP is via an electrical sending unit on the fuel rail.
