I knew there was a reason I didn't like you.

I was referring to Dons sailboats. I didn't know you had a boat .... I mean .... yacht

Glad I didn't make any derrogatory remarks about Sail Boats now.

You know I sold the '88 and only have my '71 now.

I'm dipping my toe back in the C4 pool HERE because you guys are the Undisputed C4 Gurus.

Can anyone produce photographic proof of RPO D98 pin stripes on an early C4?

I have heard of them sporadically over the years without ever seening so much as a drawing on a bar napkin.

Yeah. Yours is electric and plastic. Curious what kind of manual valve you're using?

Yes it's vacuum operated.

The valve is always open UNLESS "MAX A/C" is selected, at which time vacuum is applied to the valve and it closes off the flow of hot coolant to the heater core.

I know it's a repro valve from one of the usual suspects ($35), but the difference is AMAZING!

Now the evaporator and heater core aren't fighting each other.

Don't know if anyone else has a 69-72 A/C car with so-so cooling, but this did the trick for me.

I had to stroke EFTs to Uncle Sam and the State of MD for $29,510 last week.

I expected it (+/-), but that really took my breath away for the better part of an hour.

5 Sapphire and tonics later, I was better.

69-72 Windshield Washer Pump Rebuild for $30 w/Pics

Hey Gurus,

I like repairing things instead of replacing them whenever possible.

Rather than spending $190 with the usual suspects for a new repro 5-port washer pump, I was able to rebuild my original pump to as good or better than new.

I cobbled together parts from 2 rebuild kits for 3-port pumps that are cheap and readily available at NAPA (and elsewhere) and an assortment pack of O-rings from Home Depot.

Lastly, a new hose kit - and a good cleaning of the pick-up screen in the washer fluid bag (A/C car), and for the first time since I've owned this car, the windshield washer works!

Less than $30, not including Beer.

'71 Windshield Washer Pump Question

My windshield washer has never worked. 1/71 with 2 spd wipers and 5 port input/output. No headlamp washers, so the 2 ports for up front are just looped with a 3 inch section of hose. I removed the washer pump and after about 15 minutes of figuring out how it was supposed to work, cleaned and lubricated everything and now the piston, solenoid, gears and pawl all work nicely.

Here's my question...

Is the pump supposed to make a single "click" sound when it re-sets after you push the Washer Button on the Wiper Switch? It never made a noise before because nothing was moving due to crud and old lube.
Seems to me that the eccentric that operates the piston for sucking fluid out of the fluid bag (A/C car) and then expelling it into the hoses only operates for 2 revolutions, and then releases until the solenoid is called on by pressing the Washer button again.
Any of this sound vaguely familiar in any way?
I love taking things apart and repairing them, but I don't have anything to use as a base line to tell if this is normal.
Thanx in advance.

-Mark

Yeah, it gets pretty cozy in places.

Just remembered how to embed videos - I think. We'll see if it shows up as a YT window instead of hypertext in a minute.

Congrats to biggrizzly on taking home a trophy last Sunday at the Corvettes on the Bay show in Annapolis! Nice looking C4 Don. Even better in person. Guess we were in opposite places both times I looked for you. Did you happen to see my Ontario Orange '71 coupe pointed towards Pussers?

Thanks for the compliments but there were so many cars there nicer than mine!! That is a fact. I just know a lot of people and they must feel sorry for me and vote for my car! LOL

Damn Mark! Had I known you would be there I would have hunted you down too! I did indeed see your car. Very nice too! There were a lot of nice C3s in that show too.

For the longest time I was sitting right there in the C3 section with two of my buddies. One had a red 69 and the other was the guy that we call ZZTop because of the long white beard. He drove the 1972 Bryar Blue C3.

It was so hot I just hung out there in the shade by the C3s and then went up to Hell Point Seafood for Heineken and Crab Cakes. We came back down just before the awards were being given out. Service was real slow at that restaurant.

Are you going to Carlisle or the Baltimore Grand Prix? Also, we are having a shop night tomorrow night at Sport Chevrolet in Silver Spring.

We went over to Pussers in the Marriott from about 11-12:30, and had to leave about 2:30. Not going to the Charm City Grand Prix, as the Pax River NAS Air Show is that weekend. Carlisle is a maybe right now. It was nice having the house in Frederick as it was only a 40 minute trip up there. -Mark

That hardly gets "THE" dumbass trophy.

I doubt that would get an honorable mention during an average year.

Don't waste any time beating yourself up over it.

It's a BIG club.

I took some meat off my parking brake shoes on the '71 last Saturday just driving to/from a Corvette show right here in Annapolis.

I installed a new leaf and coil springs recently, and a new differential cover after I snapped the flange off the old one.

The body of the car sits up a good inch from it's previous height, and I never though about that effectively lengthening the distance from the PB handle to the rear brakes.

I smelled brakes when I got home from the show and traced the smell to the rear axle.

It was an easy fix to adjust (lengthen) the short cable from the PB handle. Lucky I only had to travel 1.1 miles to the show and back.

Still made me feel like a dumbass though.

Good luck with the pinging @ 3000 thing.

Mark

Updated pix.

Yeah, I'm still alive. Been a really busy summer.

The garage is underway and hope to have it finished in the next 10 days or so. Picking out flooring and looking at lift options.

Only 22W x 24D with 10' ceiling and storage/pull-down stairs.
It's pretty big by downtown Annapolis standards. If we didn't have a double lot, it wouldn't even be this big.

Can't wait to get the '71 out of storage.
Here's a Photobucket link. More later. -Mark

Thanx guys.

I already miss the '88.

Being able to just stick the key in it and GO on any nice-ish day had it's advantages.

It was so incredibly nice today, I couldn't keep my paws off the '71.

No time for a drive unfortunately.

Sold the '88 yesterday afternoon.

It needed to get done in preparation for the garage build in Annapolis and the final consolidation of homes and toys following my retirement on 1/1/11.

Wanted to take a moment to personally thank you guys for the best C4 advise on the internet. Bar None.

The '71 will surely keep my Corvette appetite quenched, but there are many attributes of the '88 that can only be enjoyed in a C4. I will miss that car.
There may be another some day. Never say never.

Every time I got into the '88 I thought about you guys and the advise given and received over the years, as far back as all of us in the "before time" at that other forum.

So, thanx again guys. I'll still be poking around on the C3 side from time to time. Durango_boy (Matthew), the new sound system you helped me with on the '71 is still going strong.

Big empty space in the Frederick garage now.

Mark

I know. That wasn't clear. We have a home in Frederick, and had a home on KI and sold it before we moved to Annapolis. Now we have one in Frederick and Annapolis, selling the one in Frederick soon.

I grew up in Wheaton/Silver Spring, so I know exactly where you're talking about holding your meetings and shop nights.

I'm retiring end of the month, and will give your offer some serious thought. Thanx again for your time.

Thanx for your time Don. I belong to the Kent Island Cruisers, but now that we've moved to Annapolis, probably going to be finding another club on this side of the bridges to do stuff with the '71. Suggestions?

Thanx Andy,

Yeah, always better luck when folks have their tax refund burning a hole in their pockets and some warm sunshine.

I'm retiring on the 31st, and we bought a really nice home in downtown Annapolis - but no garage built yet. The vettes are still in the garage at the Frederick house, and that's fine until I get the garage done.

If it doesn't sell, I won't be sad. Love this car. Just sold our '83 280ZX rather than see it outside under 2 covers for the winter. Guy that bought it also has a '67 Shelby GT350, white on blue. Sweet! So now that we're consolidating down to 1 home and only one 2-car garage, we sold her toy, now I have to sell one of mine, and it ain't gonna be the '71.

We'll see what happens, and I'll take your advise if nothing happens in the next couple weeks.

Mark

1988 Corvette Z52 A4 138k Miles $6k

Hey Andy & Gurus,

Multiple Corvette owner and long time C3/C4 member here. Running out of garage space and, sorry to say, selling my '88 Z52 Coupe. 1G1YY2187J5108690
The '71 stays.

All options except Z51 package (obviously). RPO sticker under storage compartment lid. Yes it has the B4P boost fan. Uploading more pix later this week. 138k miles and runs great. Burns no oil and exhaust is clear. Always passes emissions testing. If you look through the oil filler cap opening, you can read the stamping numbers on the head. No sludge. Always Mobil1.

No evidence of ever having been in an accident of any kind, with a Clean AutoCheck score of 46.

Looks to have been garaged most of it's life before I bought it, and always garaged since. Original paint (Dark Red) is 7/10, with normal surface scratches and rubber nose and tail fading on top. One small rub-spot on hood that appears to have been from a cover, and a rub-spot on the underside of one headlamp assembly that can only been seen when the headlamps are flipped to the open position. Body panels have NO cracks or fractures. Needs tires, but they're a real personal choice thing, so I have no intention of replacing them. Also you can see the perfectly even wear patterns on present tires. Brakes will likely need to be replaced in the next 5k miles or so.

Everything works! New seats and window rubbers. Carpet is original with normal wear. New window regulator in driver door and new hatch actuator. Good mini spare with jack. Windjammer air deflector. New cats-back in 2006, along with new water pump, thermostat and hoses. Both tops with new headliner and paint on fiberglass top. DRL conversion. R134 conversion. Alpine CD with original Bose in back and Boston Acoustic in doors. Many additional parts like a spare RH rim, A.I.R. pump and additional air cleaner set up for K&N with filters and oil. 2 covers. Both shop manuals. Steering wheel is worn, but I have a nice leather cover on it. No cracks in dashpad.

This is a turn-key vehicle once you put tires on it.

Frederick and/or Annapolis, MD

Nice job modifying the cover. Maybe the best I've seen.

Just some other data to consider. It's been discussed ad nauseum on other sites.

If you haven't already, you really should read the entire thing.

Myself, I just stick with the stock AC paper filters for stock applications.

That sucks. Lucky it wasn't another inch closer or it could have pushed your door forward and grabbed your arm. I'm guessing it didn't mess with your door alignment. Lucky dog.

Hi Guys,

Going to scout some homes in the downtown Annapolis area today.

Tough to meet my criteria. Waterfront, walking distance to Ego Alley and a 2-car garage.

Probably in the Eastport or Spa Creek neighborhoods for any of you familiar with Maryland's capital city.

I'm sure "the" house will end up in the $750k+ range.

Wish me luck.

Have a good one.

Tach Cable Worm Gear Finally Gave Up The Ghost on the '71

I have the distributor out of the '71 since the the Tach quit working and it's the drive gear on the end of the cable that is stripped. Better than the head unit going up though.

I noticed the Tach getting irratic intermittently while I had it down at Ocean City, MD in May for the big pre-'76 car show. The teeth on the worm gear were on their last legs. It finally quit all together in June.

What a PITA to remove the chrome ignition covers and associated stuff to get to the base of the distributor.

You guys would have laughed watching me try to hold a mirror inside the car to see if the Tach needle was moving while I spun the end of the cable with my other hand. Kids were all busy, so no helpers.

I guess I could have done it without removing the distributor, but after seeing the metal shavings all over what was left of the worm gear, I'm glad I didn't just stuff a new cable drive gear in there. The shaft bushings are both still nice and tight, so nothing to replace except points while it's on the bench. Just clean it up and reinstall it. I marked everything, so it should just drop right in and fire up. Gotta look for my Dwell meter after I finish this.

Also replaced the compression fitting on the oil pressure line on the back of the intake while I had it all apart. Had a minor leak.

So if your mechanical Tach starts to get irradic, plan on replacing the worm gear shortly.

A.

Haven't been here much this summer. Mandatory 6 day work weeks and fun stuff to squeeze in in what's been left haven't been giving me much free time for the internet.

Hope all is well for you guys.

I've been really lucky with both the '71 and '88 as far as mechanical stuff goes. Just routine maintenance stuff really.
