why dont u call jim barth? she what he says.

Been a while since I have posted here, but I thought this was worthwhile.

Finally had time to install the Dewitts rad last night. It was a very simple, and straight forward install that took me about 2 hours in total from start to finish to re-re. If I was to do it again I think I could knock almost an hour off that, and I am not super handy.

Took a few pictures, and man these C4's certainly are a vacumm cleaner sucking up all that road debris.

Some would probably say that it wasnt cooling because of the leaves, but in fact the 421 needed a better rad especially if I plan to road race her which i do.....

If it performs anything like it looks, then I will be a happy camper.

No cutting at all guys. Simple drop in!

Next job. ZF6 and 3.45's. Scary to think how it will go with that combo as it hauls the mail with the 3.07's.

Take care guys!

Is that the difference between the tunes, or did you mean to say 470 RWTQ?

My mistake. Yes I meant to say 434rwhp/470rwtq.

Realistically I would be very happy to see approx. 450rwhp and 485rwtq after the dust settles.....

When its fully tuned and the x-pipe in place, I will post the dyno sheet. I dont see a point right now.

I had this video on my camera for probably 6 months and finally had time to download on youtube today.

You can see the difference from the car tuned and not tuned. Actually to be 100% fair we did have a few more issues then just the tune, but this gives you an idea.

For some off reason I mentioned in the video that I had Borla mufflers which isnt true at all. It's obvious those are the B&B's.

I was planning on replacing the reasonator last fall with the B&B x-pipe, but it didnt play out. A have a few projects in the spring, and one is the x-pipe which will make the exhaust flow better. That reasonator necks down to either 2.25 or 2.50 inches. I am also debating cut outs or muffler eliminators for mild to wild!!

Not too hard to tell which video is which. The smoke in the untuned sort to speak was the break in oil.

Many of you know the mods so I wont explain but last dyno was 434rwhp/470rwhp and that will only go north with better flowing exhaust, and more tuning!

Take care!

seems like the 219 maybe be a good combo bob.

would be nice if you can port out the 113's north of 240cfm as well.

I have been made aware of the 2012 catalog with improved airflow on many of their SBC heads. I thought this would interest alot of the guys on here since their heads are pretty popular. The 195 comp port, all the 210's and the 220's got a make over. A more efficient port that flows more with the same port volume. They were great before, but now it's crazy what they are flowing.

The 195 comp port before: .400 255cfm, .500 285 cfm, .550 294, .600 301cfm.
The 2012 195 comp port: .400 260, .500 293, .550 304, .600 308.

The 210 race ready before .400 249 .500 279, .550 289, .600 295, .650 299.
The 2012 210 race ready: .400 255, .500 292, .550 301, .600 309, .650 311.

The 210 comp port before: .400 257, .500 290, .550 301, .600 308, .650 311
The 2012 210 comp port: .400 257 .500 296, .550 310, .600 318, .650 322.

The 220 comp port before: .400 258, .500 294, .550 309, .600 317, .650 323 .700 326
The 2012 220 comp port: .400 263, .500 299, .550 312, .600 324, .650 328, .700 329

They also now make a entry level 220 race port that flows 318cfm@.650

Here is the inside of the B&B reasonator. What a difference from the x-pipe.

I am going on a whime in saying I am going to pick up some power, and its going to be louder!

Been running perfect. Driving it as much as I can but haven't made it to the track this year. I put new wheels on this spring, then new seats and door panels and such inside.

Building a garage now, then I'm going to change my heads to the AFR 195's with the 75cc chambers to lower compression down to 9.7, put in bigger injectors and a few other things, then go with a supercharger. I'm thinking about 12 to 14 lbs of boost should make it run as fast as it is now, only without the bottle. I am planning on leaving the nitrous on it and may spray a 50 shot with the boost. Can't wait to tear into it but I'm not going to until the garage is finished. Will be nice working indoors for once!

If you want some 75cc heads let me know down the road.

Goodluck with it all, and keep me updated plz.

A while back I heard the 4+3 was in the range of 17% loss.

If that's somewhat accurate. I am around 522 hp and 566 tq at the crank with what I believe is a restrictive exhaust system.

I will be making a little exhaust change very soon, and hoping to put it back on the same dyno before the snow hits. I am "hoping" to improve on those numbers.....

I would like to see 450rwhp, and I really dont need any more torque but you never know I could be as high as 480rwtq. Big block tq is fun foresure. "If" I reach those numbers I certainly cant ask for much more from those little ports.

Changing out the reasonator for an x-pipe.....

From everything I have heard it does neck down. I have heard 2.5" and I have now heard 2.75".

I will know forsure in regards to mine when it comes off hopefully next week at the exhaust shop.

If it does neck down then I know I will gain some with the x pipe forsure....

I finally had time to throw her on the dyno. The dyno was a DynoJet 224x.

I dyno operator mentioned that he recently had a Corvette dyno day where he mentioned that stock LS3's were throwing down 370-380 rwhp. After watching a few cars before mine it seemed that the dyno numbers were a tad on the low side, but either way it didnt matter because this was my baseline.

1st run- Coolant temp around 165

424rwhp@5900
458rwtq@4000

2nd run- Coolant temp around 210

434rwhp@5900
470rwtq@4000

It was very hard to tell exactly what the rwtq peaked at because the torque curve was so flat. There was also an issue with my car because my wires were too think, and the torque rating spiked in some areas, but I will add that at 2500 she made 450rwtq. Also the airfuel stopped working after the 2nd car which was a bummer, but I think I am somewhat close, but it would have been nice to see it.

The horsepower peaked at 5900, but stayed flat to 6300 rpm's then started a slight decline to 6500. I was kinda suprised that horsepower curve didnt drop more past 6000, but those heads still kept on trucking.

All in all I was pleased. I thought I would have made more rwhp, but I didnt think I would make that much rwtq. I do have to say that I am very impressed with that TPIS miniram intake as it makes power everywhere in the curve, and thats with 3.07's (4+3 still).

Many of you wanted to see what the little heads could do, and it is fair to say that these heads are maxed out. Everyone has there own opinion but I dont think this combo is maximized so there is a little left on the table. :D

The car was dynoed with the B&B reasonator, B&B mufflers, and 1 3/4 Hooker Headers. I do believe my exhaust is holding me back a tad (15-20rwhp). I will be making some changes and re-attending the dyno for some pulls.

All in all the car ran well, but I did notice that I had a header leak after the dyno runs. The car isnt quiet at WOT, and with the fan blowing on the car, it would have been very hard to hear that noise. I am kinda pissed off at myself for not checking the header bolts (bolt actually fell out, and other bolt was loose). Now I am not saying this affected my dyno number, but I do think its worth noting.

I am glad I got a baseline.I wanted a motor to run on the street that was snappy and had excellent low, mid, and upper hp, and I got it!

Take care guys!

Igor,

It feels like its in the ballpark of 450 at the tire in both hp and tq. I have a feeling it won't be a dyno queen but "might" be quicker then cars with more hp. Power under the curve.

Yeah the GT500 only has 285's I believe on the rear but on a roll tires aren't really as important as from a dig.

What mph did your C4 and Ford trap in the 1320?

Also tell me more about your stroker? And if you ever want to upgrade those as cast TFS let me know as I can get you a good deal on some AFR's. I used to have some TFS 195's Kenny D's that flowed max 260 cfm at .600 lift. Your 406 is begging for more especially with that miniram....

Take care!

Update:

Car pulls really well and most important is very smooth hence the top notch machining.

I only have about 450 miles on the 421, but its fair to say that the rings are seated nicely.

I had a bit of a rough start up tune but after TPI421Vette flew in for 5 days to help me out we smoothed out hat tune.

I haven't had the car down the 1320 because I still have the 4 plus 3 in the car and the 3.07's, but I will attend the track when the ZF and 3.45's are installed and see where it sits in the 11's (all depends on me).

I will be putting the car on the dynojet next month but I will say that it pulls harder then Fords bigdog 2011 GT500.

Hope all is well with the Guru crew.

I will post the newer start up and idle video soon. The idle has certainly smoothed out and I am pleasantly suprised how good on fuel the car is but I think the small heads help out with that.

Later.

thanks for that. curious do you know what the car weighs with you?

your timeslips are about what i expect with my 421.

that 11.4x is nothing to sneeze at. goodjob!!

I haven't had it on a set of scales since I bought it.

When I first bought it back in 2005 I put it on my dads Rebco scales. Only mods at the time were a Corsa cat back and A Mold wheels - it weighed 3280 with a 1/2 tak of gas.

I always race with full tank and I've since installed the 4pt roll bar.

I figure the 4pt weighs about 40-50 lbs. A gallon of gas weighs 6lbs, so thats another 60 lbs.

Probally right at 3380 lbs race weight.

ok thanks. i am somewhat comparing our combo's and weights. just doing some bench racing.

from what i read, you have a custom cam. can you give us a hint of what duration and lift without listing all the facts.

The rear kit is ready to go (as shown above), we're designing the front kit with Wilwood 6 piston calipers now for me and another forum member. If you don't need them urgently (a few weeks) we can do a package deal...let me ask about pricing.

My guess is $2500? Maybe we set up a group buy if we get 5 people interested. I'm sure I can convince him to make 5 kits.

i first need to get the 421 running close to perfect as can. i am not in a hurry for brakes, but keep the threads going. i have some C5 brakes in the garage, but not sure if i need to go one better.

i also like the sounds of 6 pistons. $2500 for front and back isnt bad at all. would that be a complete braking system with nothing else needed?

Awesome! Can't wait to hear your review after driving it for a while. I know this wasn't built for dragstrip use but I have a feeling after blistering the tires on the street you will be at the track before the end of the year.

thanks man. yeah i'll take it to the 1320! whats new with your car?

The stock L-98 was taken out in July 2009, and the 421 was dropped in its place. I still cant believe it was that long ago, but such is life.

Most of you know how busy I have been the last several years hence why the car has not been top priority. I am even suprised that it has come this far.

Fast forward to April 2011, and the car has finally been started, and I absolutely love the sound of it. It idles at around 750 rpm which is a tad bit low I think. The tune is not bang on, but I believe its somewhat close. My engine builder Jim Barth who is a respected forum member of the CF will be flying in near the end of May to assist me in tuning this monster.

Originally when the 421 was first started the amount of blue smoke due to the start up lube, and the timing being off was certainly a stressful moment being the first high performance motor that I have had built for me. But after I got someone who was experienced in the FAST system, and the way I had it setup, the blue smoke went away at idle, and the idle its self calmed down, and my mind was eased a wee bit. If the motor was damaged in any way because of how much fuel was being dumped down on initial start up, I certainly would not be building another one. I doubt washing the rings wouldnt be a good thing.

The roads are still a little dusty so I wont be driving the car just yet, and it might still snow yet. The airfuel on the FAST on idle is in the safe range, but like I said it will need to be fine tuned, and I will be throwing it on the dyno in May for chits and giggles when Jim flys north to Canuckville.

Anyways here is a little video of the 421. I am sure I will have my issues, but if it goes like it sounds then I will be a happy camper and the wait will be worth it!

It sounds better in person, but I figured a video is better then nothing!

More vids to come down the road. Take care guys!
