I always put as much as I can in the convertor usually a little over a quart. Then put as much as you can in the trans keeping track of what you put in then start it up. In your case with an initial start up with your engine you have a few things going on at once. It would be good if you have someone else help and let them monitor the trans fill while you do what you have to do.

This must be the same engine
Here is my 78 CLR 010 355 with vortec heads and modified the block for the roller ZZ4 cam. I built this past summer This engine was built right on this stand. It is going in my 77 with the 2004r trans with 3.55 gears This engine dolly will grow into a run stand and breaks down into three sections for storage. As usual the BS flows out of DB"s mouth. It is an incorrect way to check End Play in the bearings.
1 You need to jack up the vehicle 2 Remove the wheel and out board half shaft 3 Mount a dial indicator to torgue control arm and rest the pointer on the flange or spindle 4 Grasp the rotor and move it in and out axially in and out and observe the readings...........001-.008 limit The 6 and 12 rock will indicate excessively worn torgue arm bushing or stut arm bushings

It's not that I don't think the 3.08 will work well with the 200. I know from first hand experience. I didn't read it anywhere. Carfull what you read it may get you in trouble

I agree with Beachbum Also the 2004r trans will in no way like a 3.08 ratio. You will need 3.55 or higher. Try again

76 had an early and late design. If the attaching points for the lower part of the shroud has a bracket with a stud for each side it is the 1 design. If the lower part of the shroud attaches with two clips it is the 2nd design 76L-81. With what you are trying to acomplish it will work as pointed out the diffrence is in the lower shroud attaching points.
