True....

the 94's have a flash programmable pcm as well, and they use the GM ODB I style diagnostic connector.

I'm not sure what issues you may run into when someone wants to hookup a scan tool and program in an earlier year vs '95. And if you program in a 95, the tool may want the ODBII style plug, not sure what issues you may run into with the ODBI style plug being installed ect..

I'm not sure that's true about installing the pan once the motor is in the car.. It's been a while since I installed one, from my memory I thought accessing some of the pan bolts with the motor in the car was extremely difficult due to the shape of the canton pan and that the motor must be removed to remove the pan.. or atleast it would be much easier then trying to remove while the motor was installed....

The brakes on the X developed a shake in the front recently while braking. I did a full brake job on the truck maybe 5000 miles ago. Cut the rotors front and rear and new pads. Guess the front rotors didn't like it. Visually with a straight edge no warpage, but I didn't check the runout. I did see a lot of rust on the inside vanes so I think they are out of balance. What's weird is sometimes the shake is not there, sometimes it is. Never experienced that before. Found a vendor on ebay with raybestos pro grade rotors shipped for $45 each. Cheapest price anywhere so I just bought them. I have a road trip in two weeks so I'd like to get the brakes fixed up before that.

Still having fun with that huh?

Not much going on today here... my sisters baby shower was yesterday and recovering from that.. later going to a late lunch with my sister, her mother in law, my mom, theresa and I...

Ordered a motorvac machine today, hopefully it comes and all works well with it. This is one of my favorite pieces of equipment, helps keep your injectors clean. Some people believe in performing fuel system cleanings others not so much.. I see the proof in the fuel trims, hard to argue with the facts...

When I was at my dad's a few weeks ago we had to buy some sockets to tinker with the Vette. NBD, Harbor Freight had them cheap, but still. I can't pack everything in the truck to travel with that I might need, not enough room.

Just buy a trailer from harbo freight, and mount sometype of tool storage on it... LoL...

I'm not real familiar with the setup your running I have seen the dyna spark before, though I thought the setup I saw had 4 coils with 2 towers each on them.

If it's an ignition issue, it almost sounds like the optical sensor in the distributor is failing with the crank/no start... otherwise I was thinking the igntion module could be failing but again I'm not familar with the exact setup you have since if your running....

Rememeber the ECM is taking it's RPM signal from the optical pickup on this.

If it cranks an does not start I'd want to know that I have the fuel injectors being pulsed or not. Assuming we have the fuel pump turning on which I doubt is an issue right now but a possibility for a no start of course.

If they are not being pulsed, then I know I'm probably not having the ignition coils being fired either.

A Labscope is very helpful in checking these types of things. you could see what the actual singal patern looks like vs a voltage reading on a meter or if a test light is turning on or off..

Speaking of Opti's...

Anyone use one of these?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1995-1996-199 ... sh=item3a6bad337d&vxp=mtr

I'm sure this is a made in china type....
I bought one for our nova, to upgrade it to HEI, most the regular manufacturers make their economy distributors over seas anyway so I figured I'd try it.. works gread and it was only like $40... though with one of these there is quite a bit of labor envolved... but if your doing it yourself you may want to try one out and see how it works, I'm curious.. afterall it has a warranty... (which doesn't cover your time obviously.. )

I've done a ton of research about this, just got a 3.07 rear to replace my 2.59..my motor is stock so I'm not worried about it. If you go with anything higher than 3.07 you will have to replace the speedometer gear at the tail end of the tranny and the one in the VSS.no big deal but its harder to get the speedometer right. You will also be buzzing pretty high at highway speeds, I've read 3.73 is pretty much the limit with these autos...changing to a Dana 44 is a big job, way more involved but will handle anything..all depends on what kind of driving you do..for stoplight wars the 3.73 will be great but will not last too long..

I did the 3.75 gear set in mine from richmond.. waste of money on a dana 36. The 3.54 gears is what I would go with if your keeping the dana 36. I think they will hold up fine if installed and properly broken in,and of course not running slicks all the time...

I'm content for now with my 3.07 diff (mine too had the 2.59 first thing I really didn't like about my car when I bought it, couldn't even spin the tires from a stop with it)

Keep in mind, the larger the ring gear the smaller the pinion. I think the larger gear sizes (over the 3.07) fail often becuase the pinion cannot handle the load on it. I've seen this a few times, it's how my 3.73 set failed, and just recently a 3.54 set on a diff that was a rebuilt unit the customer had purchased from one of the catalogue companies, where he lost a good portion of one of the teeth. It was still driving though loud like this, he probably got 50K miles or so out of that diff though..

FYI 94-96 with flash programable PCM does not need the speedo gears changed ect. You can flash with with either a hand held programmer or tuning software via laptop such as tuner cat, lt1 edit ect...

LoL the old paper clip method, haven't done that in years... but it's definitely one of those good to know little tricks to pull codes on older GM's....

Basically what Bill said.. it gives you bi-directional capabilities.. Data + you can actuate things..

I recently bought a set of Milwaukee M18 cordless impacts 1/2 inch, 3/8 inch and their drill.. I also have 3 batteries, a light and a charger all less then what snapon wanted for their 1/2 cordless impact by it's self with a battery and charger..

We have a set like that at the shop for re-threading.. I also bought one for spindles which worked really well for me on an old C3 I needed to clean the threads up on...

I also recently bought a Upper control arm press of e-bay (new) haven't used it yet but I know I will at some point, I'd like to do the upper control arm bushings on the nova next year.. there not really loose, but the rubber is coming out of them so they need to go....

It looks like the grease fitting has sunk in. This usually is a sign that the joint is worn, If you haven't take the load off the joint by placing a stand under the lower control arm, then check for play grab the wheel/tire at the top and bottom. Sometimes they will feel tight but if you lift up or give them some effort you'll feel them move.. greasing a worn joint will make it feel tighter but it's pointless if it's worn and has play it needs to be replaced..

I also agree Moog is at the top of my list, AcDelco and Raybestos are also good choices.

If it jerks and bangs going into forward either 1st or OD, maybe check the C-Beam bolts make sure they are tight.. I know that will not be the answer to the whole problem nessacerily. But just an idea.... It's possible you have a sticking valve or an issue with an accumulator, or maybe the splines on one of the drums is worn though I would tend to think temperature would play more with a valve issues then a clutch pack sticking. That's just my guess as I am not a trans expert, though I've built a few 4L60E's.

I would soak them in PB blast, definitely use line wrenches as stated.. and I would heat the fittings up before even trying to turn them. I bought one of these tools and I use it just about every day...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YO_snrzYrs

Works awesome on lines like this! there is a used one of the 1st generation of this tool on e-bay right now for about $300

I agree with Matthew! VERY FAST! But, I think removing the seat saved you time. I have come to the conclusion that it is faster to peal back the layers on these cars than try to work through them.

Excellent job!!!

Agree, I'm a big guy... so removing the seats can often help with under the dash work.. sometimes you have to lay upside down on your back to do the job...

No problem, it was late last night, so I looked at your question about the f-body diagram.. the switch goes to an LED in the cluster it looks like... my point I was trying to make is the magnetic level switch may not be designed to flow and real amount of current as with the '89 where it uses a regular bulb.. but it's worth trying.... I would test it out though first...

Matt,
I e-mailed you the brake warning light diagrams from your '89 and a 2002 F-body.. the magnetic switch on the F-body is designed to apply ground to the circuit however it may not be designed to flow current for a bulb, it may only be designed to ground a signal for the IPC. I think you could try it though, wire one side to a ground and the other to the factory harness for the brake warning...

Very possible you still have some air in the system, I'd bleed them again, I'd start with the rear, gravity bleed them, then have someone help you manually bleed them, then the front.. I'm guessing the air in the the rear...

Check for codes, Check fuel pressure, both good places to start... I'd check the fuel pressure regulator as well, make sure you are not having fuel leaking into the vacuum line... just a though not real hard to check.. IAC not a bad idea either to check..

I would think it the vanes were bent, you would have issues all the time not just cold or hot.... Again I'm not a trans expert, but I have rebuilt several GM trans's mostly the 4L60E...

The converter leaking down over night, I would think if there were air inside the converter it would purge out pretty quickly... I'm not convinced it's a torque converter issue..

I'm thinking more along the lines of a valve body issue, or sticking Throttle Valve...

The hesitation you described could be "flare" where the trans slips when initialy shifting into the next gear as the clutch pack begins to grab. Or it could be just shifting late?

I would re-check the throttle cable adjustment first... there is an article I read somewhere that talked about using a line pressure gauge to check the adjustment, and they found there perfectly adjusted tv cable wasn't...

Anyway just some thoughts... next time buy a core and let's rebuild it before you pull the trans..

I had heard that some people had problems with that tool box. I had problems with my snap on.

Was it because of the weight capicity of the drawers?

Yes, the lowes box has cheap slides that can't handle the weight..

What kind of problems did you have with the snap-on? they are warrantied for life only problem is if your not in a shop where you have a snap-on guy you may have a hard time with warranty? I'm not sure maybe you can e-mail or send it in and they will mail you whatever part but I've never tried that..

My 12 year old snap on box, hasn't had too many issues, I rolled mine around the shop for the majority of that time.. and I only had to warranty a couple slides that were damaged when I took the drawers out to move the box. and the lock and roll or (whatever thay call them) plastic slides that keep the drawer shut that were worn.. other then that no problem and I use it 5 days a week...

Just gave away my 35 year old Snap on Rollaway to my kid. Have tons of tools all over the floor. Like the pretty one at Lowel's but don't really need the frig.

Any opiion's

Don't buy the lowes one... I recently was looking for one as well at home since I had 2 boxes and wanted to move into one large box, I looked at that again but it's crap as far as quality goes.. it looks pretty and if you hardly use your tools and, don't plan on loading up the drawers it may work for you... but check the reviews, the slides break often, and the locking mechanism fails which is not serviceable... I think it has a 3 year warranty, and they will send you replacements but after that?

I looked at used snap-on boxes which are great but everyone wanted an arm and a leg for them of course and most were older boxes that were dented and banged up from use over the years.. I looked at craftsman, again but wasn't really impressed.. I looked at harbor freight and found one I liked but they do not make a top box for it. It had some good reviews and I looked at it in person nice box at an awesome price.. of course only 11 drawers...
http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-too ... roller-cabinet-67681.html

while I was at sears, I found they had another line of boxes from Viper Tool Storage, I didn't know much about the box, but it was on sale, was the size I was looking for, and had a lifetime warranty on the slides, locks, and casters basically all your wear items.. they have many different boxes and options there. I contacted the company that makes them, and the owner responded back to me the next day. yes they are made over seas but they are a nice quality box.. especially for the price it was probably 1/4 or less then the similar size snap-on I have at work. They can also custom build you a box. And they said they could make on in the US and even custom build it for me but it would cost alot more..

Here is a article I wrote about mine with a pic 18 drawers I think though on mine..

Hope that helps...

-=Jeff=- would be a good person to talk to, he swapped a manual into his '89 C4 (now sold) along with a complete dash from a '91.. Of course he used a ZF6 in his.. but he is very knowlegeable and will likely have some good info..

What they said. It's on my list after the rear end is done.

Also, the fat tires up front on these things do sap some of the delicate nature of the steering...

One of my thoughts too, most these newer cars a have even lower profile tires ect..

Z51 Steering Rack

Yep, Replace all the worn 20 year old steering/suspension parts.. and upgrade to a Z51 rack... change the shocks if they are older as well... You'd be suprised how many C4's have worn out ball joints and wheel bearings and the owner would have never suspected it if noone told them...

I picked up a 24 in break at HF on sale for $64.
It's not a box break but does an adequate job.

I've thought about it actually...

No problem! let me know when you are going to stop by the day before and I can bring it to the shop...

Lokks great, Rick.

Thank you for not showing the dirty work.

The fun always starts when you're putting clean chit together.

me, I just finished playing with sticky fiberglass, grind, sand, more sitcky fiberglass.

Yes noone wants to see the dirty part of this stuff, luckly most of what I am working with is new or has already been reconditioned by our body guy. Most of the dirty stuff I'm dealing with is fabricating custom brackets, pipes, ect. Which I am doing all by hand with a die grinder and bench grinder. Without a metal break of course which would really make bending 14 gauge steel nice vs using a vise.

If your on facebook, please refer your friends. I'm trying to build up some viewers for the new page so I can show my boss.

BTW you can read some of the stories on my blog:AutoServiceUpdated.Blogspot.com
