Congratulations on the new C6 Andy.. Yellow is my favorite.. I got a C6 last year and they are great cars, I still have my C4 but it's sitting in the garage with a blown head gasket that I have to replace..Now your going to have to get a "Tech 2 scanner" to have any hope of working on the car yourself, they're not like our old C4s. One thing I will mention about the C6s, always use "Top Tier" gas in the car, never burn "off brand" gas or it will cause the fuel sending units to go bad. The off brand gas doesn't have the needed cleaners and additives to keep the sender clean, GM highly recommends using only "Top Tier" gas for this reason..Good Luck with the car and I hope you have many years of fun with it...WW

For the 89, you are lucky... the ignition is GM corporate HEI, so no worries there.

If you have a 6spd manual, I would look for some OEM pressure plates and good throw out bearings.

I think engine controllers are ok...

Otherwise, get spare interior pieces and trim.

One thing they're not making for the 88-89 aftermarket is dash bezels for the instrument cluster...They have them for earlier years but the 88-89 is deeper for the angled cluster..There was a Chinese company that use to make the egr solinoids for the 89 but stopped a few years ago...Guess they got them all back when they failed so they quit making them..When I put my 383 in a few years ago I deleted every piece of emissions crap on the engine, egr, air pump, and all the tubes and pipes that were bolted on went in a box..I'm just glad West Virginia doesn't have emissions tests, makes it much easier to keep an old car running.....WW

It depends which heads your using..With my Dart pro 1 heads it was a bitch getting the rockers set up because of the way the larger valves are set in the head...I have heard some AFR heads have this same problem...With my Dart heads you have to push the guide plates on cylinders 3,4,5,6, as far to the side as possible to get the roller tips to almost cover the valve tips..I was upset by this until I called Dart and talked to their tech guy..He told me the roller only has to cover 70% of the valve tip to function properly..He said if it bothered me I could buy offset rockers or use split guide plates for those cylinders to fix the problem...On stock heads and most aftermarket heads the rocker sits straight up and down on the head. On my Dart heads the rockers sit at an angle on those 4 cylinders and the guide plates and pushrods have to be pushed over until the pushrods all but touch the side of the push rod slot in the head, and even with doing this, the roller still doesn't cover the whole valve tip...WW....

I have to agree with what Ultraman and biggrizzly wrote earlier.. The 2000 and 2001 C5s had very bad ratings as far as repairs and customer satisfaction in the "Consumer Report" and also on most ratings sites...The 2002-2004 had much better ratings..I was looking to buy a C5 and ruled out the 2000 and 2001 because of all the issues they had listed.....WW

The best thing about a revolver is you never have to worry about a jam. A lot of the home defense experts still suggest a revolver because of the simplicity of the weapon.. .Personally, If I can't hit something with 6 shots, an extra few shots aren't going to do me much good...WW

I think we can do something decent in your budget.

I’m figuring your going to want to stay TPI so the stuff I've selected fit that powerband and HP range.

Eagle cast crank, SIR rods KB Hyper pistons internally balanced Rotating assembly - $884

Dart 180 SHP alum cyl heads hyd roller springs $980

Cloyes double roller timing chain. $20

Pushrods $110,

You’re a couple hundred over 3K with brand new Dart Alum heads.

These parts are close to what Pete K used to build my 383. He used a Scat 9000 crank instead of Eagle, and a Erson 218/226 cam ,Speed Pro hyper pistons, but the prices are about the same. I have the Dart Pro 1 180 heads which I like alot, and my compression is "10.25 to 1"..
Im running a ported and port matched TPI intake consisting of a Edelbrock intake manifold, and a set of Accel intake runners, along with a megaported plenum. One thing you might want to consider is to use a 4 bolt block like the one Pete used for my engine instead of your stock block. Besides being stronger, this also allows you to drive your car while building the new 383..
There's nothing wrong with using the above parts to build a 383. I have put 16,000 miles on my 383 since it was built, and Pete K had almost the exact same engine except with a Super Ram and use to take his to the track quite often with no problems. Pete was turning mid 11s with it, which isn't to shabby for a budget 383...If your going to be running a TPI intake you don't have to worry about turning high rpms and destroying the motor but you will have a ton of torque which is better for the street. If I remember correctly Pete said my motor should have around 380-390 hp at the crank...Good Luck...WW

Man , you guys aren't very good at guessing, so I'll have to tell you.. Its "Blaze Starr", you have heard of her haven't you? or maybe your to young to remember her.. She owned the 2oclock club in Baltimore, there was a movie made about her called "Blaze" staring "Paul Newman".. When I was in my early twenties I use to shoot the pictures of her for the glass markeys out in front of her club and for her advertizing brochures. I have a ton of pictures of her and her girls dancing and posing in the club. I spent many hours talking to her at the club, and at her home, and she was a very sweet, warm, person, not at all like you would expect someone in her position to be....Anyhow, I was just looking through some of my older photo files on the computer, saw the pics of Blaze and thought I would share..Here's a pic of me as a scruffy 21 year old, with Blaze .What a beautiful woman ...WW

Andy, One thing you said early in this thread, about oil senders always going to 80 psi when they go bad is not always correct.. My sender went bad about a month ago and the way it was detected was when cruising the gauge would jump all over the place. When I hooked up a manual gauge the pressure was steady, so I changed out the sender and the problem was solved.. Just my 2 cents...WW

I may be a little late for the party, but here's my 2 cents on the problem..
On my 89 with the 383 I was having the same problem with temps when the A/C was on,my temps would keep climbing until I was forced to turn the A/C off. I installed a Dewitt's high speed fan and now I run about 210-215. The stock fan puts out 1700 cfm while the Dewitt's puts out 2360 cfm.The difference can be felt by putting your hand near the gills on the side where the air flows out, before I could hardly feel any air at all coming out,now with the Dewitt's fan the air is really moving. I also noticed the underhood temps are much lower because of all the air moving through faster, this also has to be better for all the plastic and rubber parts under the hood....WW

After I got my Edelbrock pump, I had a bunch of people suggest getting a Stewart water pump..There street pumps have normal flow but much better components then a stock pump. They make 3 levels of pumps for anything from street to strip and alot of guys swear by them. They start with GM water pump castings, then mill them and install there own parts. For the street they suggest either a"stage 1" or "stage 2" .. Be careful with the high flow waterpumps..I bought a Edelbrock High flow pump for my 383 and now my temps are running 5 degrees hotter then with my stock pump..I had heard storys about water passing through a radiator to fast to cool properly, but now I see the storys can be true..I figured since I have a Dewitts radiator the Edelbrock pump would just make it better....WRONG...WW

That's just so F'in' strange Wayne. There's a million small blocks sitting out in the cold with no leaks.

Does it quit leaking if you drive it?

Bill,
It never leaks when I drive it or right after I drive it.. It has to sit until cold and then the outside temps have to get below freezing...I must have the worst luck in the world....Really..I just hope Summit lets me return it to them, since I have trashed the original box....WW

Wayne, it just doesn't make any sense (not questioning what you said or that you verified that the coolant's coming from the weep hole).

Here a pic of the components, the shaft/bearing has a double seal. The inner seal is pressed in before the impeller is installed. The inner seal has a metal housing, spring and seal, it's pretty beefy.

The only way coolant can get to the weep hole is if it bypass the shaft thru the seal or around the metal pressfit housing.
To me, it only seems likely that somethings happening to that seal or the coolant doesn't have enough antifreeze, expanding to ice, pushing past the seal.

After you have a leak can you run again for a while without it leaking?

It's possible that there's a rebuild kit for the Edelbrock, just guessing.

Something's going on here that's not normal. I can buy one crappy new pump but not 3.

The coolant is mixed by buying one jug of antifreeze, pouring half into another jug, then topping both off with distilled water,, 50/50... The car can sit for a week or 2 and I won't have any leaks until I get a day with temps down below freezing, I go out the next day and there's coolant on the floor..I took a mirror and checked and theres stains coming from the weep hole..I also placed a folded paper towel under the weep hole and after a cold night there is coolant on the towel...Maybe I should get an electric water pump..This is the second pump to do the exact same thing. In the summer or warmer weather I never see a leak of any kind...Go figure.....WW
