So it turns out that it literally did not like my specific email address.

I changed my account email to a different address, edited my profile, and then changed it back to the original address.

Both were gmail addresses, so it's just weird.

Just in case anyone else has also been looking for years for a group 75 AGM (not 75/86), Advance Auto now carries one.

With the ever-present 25% coupon it's about $150

Autozone has had a group 75 in their inventory for years but have never seen them available.

I've tried to update my profile a few times over the last several months and am unable to do so because it responds "ERROR: Invalid Email"

Which is messed up because it's able to use that email for password recovery.

Also because there's no editing of an email address on that page, so wtf?

Same thing happens even if I make no changes and hit "save"

I finally got around to putting a scope on these things.

Based on what I've read here about using the Bose CDM output into aftermarket amps, as well as the difference I can hear between the two, I was expecting to see some ugly equalization in the Bose CDM.

This is what I found

Resized Image

('MaxV' is at the highest voume setting that doesn't clip. For Bose this is at 100% volume. For non-Bose at about 75%. 'LowV' is a lower volume setting, around 50% of MaxV. All are with tone controls at neutral.)

So, based on frequency response, the Bose is a much better signal source.

However, I also found that the signal out of my non-Bose CDM is perfectly clean, while the signal from my Bose CDM is an ugly mofo. I see both periodic amplitude variance (with low frequency input tones it looks like an AM signal) and also a settling of the amplitude over time.

Based on this, I have to assume that my Bose CDM is bad, but on the other hand, since people have reported since the beginning of time that the signal out of the Bose CDM is crap, and since it clearly isn't the frequency response, maybe what I'm seeing is the problem.

If anybody has a Bose CDM they don't need I'd be interested in checking another one to see if it performs the same as mine.

There are some interesting control quirks with the Bose CDM. When you turn the bass control up, it cuts the mid frequencies. With the knob up all the way it boosts 30Hz by 30% and cuts 1kHz by 30%. The non-Bose behaves in a normal fashion, just boosting low frequencies.

The other quirk is with the fader. With the Bose CDM, fading 100% to one direction only reduces the opposing volume about 50% (a WAG from listening - didn't actually measure this). With the non-Bose CDM you get the more normal behavior of turning off one set of speakers when the control is in an extreme position.

You including gas, insurance, etc. in that cost? In which case it seems reasonable for a teenager and a vette.

If $24k is just for parts for 'necessary' repair and maintenance as you imply, then man you really need to just stick with public transportation.

On one of the old DIY tuning forums from the 90s there was some info on many of the GM datastreams. It may still be on the net somewhere.

For the streams being discussed here it was only the most rudimentary outline of message headers, checksums, etc. but not message content.

There are only two ways you'll get that info:

- find a retired GM engineer who worked on it and saved some documents

- reverse engineer it yourself

Oh, and I think the references to using 'newer' Cd mechanisms were describing the one I already have in my 94 as the newer one.

The earlier versions (1990-?) didn't read CD-R from the factory, correct?

One of my initial reactions on opening one of these HU was "this is some cool shit!"

Now that I've played around with it some - this is some cool shit!

The CDM, the cassette unit, the CD unit, and the faceplate are each independent devices that live on the E&S bus.

They all auto-identify at startup. You can move them around on the network (e.g., plug the CD into the spot where the cassette was) and all works fine.

Although it doesn't like having two of the same device plugged in at once...

This is the same E&S bus that in other GM cars is used to talk to external tape, CD, CD changer, onstar, etc. devices. So you should be able to substitute some of those devices or perhaps even add them.

Whether the CDM will recognize any class of device is a good question, and of course the faceplate won't have controls for all of them.

Back to the original question - I'm pretty sure this means we can use CD mechanisms from other GM cars of the same era.

I think 'same era' means stereo systems introduced in the 198?-1994 timeframe. I've found references to "E&S version 1.5" which I think came in with cars introduced after '95, which is why all the aftermarket adapters state they are for '95-up cars.

So if 1.5 stuff is not backward compatible, then the possible sources of spare parts are all just as old as our cars. But maybe it helps to avoid the corvette tax.

Besides the CD acting up, my other reason for going inside the HU was to try and find a more elegant way of aux input. For the last few years I've been hijacking the audio input to the CDM, which meant a CD needed to be spinning.

So there's a bus there we could use - found a few people who have worked on homemade E&S interfaces but all the completed ones I found are for later cars.

I probably won't put a lot more effort into this because long term I am going a different route. I am thinking of cutting the power line to the cassette motor and hijacking the cassette audio for now.

While opening my CD mechanism for cleaning a tiny spring went sproing and now I have to search the entire workshop for it... Resized Image

One final thought, this topography is, to the very best of my knowledge, unique to the Corvette. I don't even think the Cadillac systems were of this nature.

GM luxury cars of the same era have the same 'topography' as the vette. That has always been well known.

The system linked in the OP, which is found in a ton of plebeian GM cars, has the same topography as the vette, and that was news to me.

I have been poking around the internet looking for internal pictures of Delco head units, because my CD has started acting up and I'm looking to see what other GM units use the same CD mechanism (my guess is - most of them).

Anyway, I just ran across this:
http://www.angelfire.com/ks2/xtremeautos/cdrepair/delcorepair.htm

Look at the fourth picture on that page.

I was aware of other cars that use the same HU-CDM arrangement as the late C4, but had not seen a CDM that is bolted on to become part of the HU like this.

And, yep, physically that's the same CD mechanism.

I'm finding references to substituting CD mechanisms out of newer cars which apparently have more modern circuit boards.

Stay tuned...

Anybody got first hand experience with stagger in the 5-6% range?

I'm looking at a tire size that will give me ~ 5.7% stagger.

My own experience is that 4% works fine and 8% pisses off the computer.

I've seen some posts on CF that say the limit is 5%, but it's unclear whether the poster actually has experience or just heard that somewhere...

Need history on car. You've owned it 15 years, drive it regularly, and the problem just cropped up? Or you just bought it and have no idea how long it's been doing it? Or ???

First thought through my mind when I see a new member from LA with electrical problems is "Katrina."

A quick glance at your other threads shows you have additional electrical issues.

At the least you need to collect all these problems in one place so people can see the big picture.

And you need an FSM.

On the specific problem - cruise control still works fine? That indicates it's not a VSS problem and probably not a PCM problem. First thing I'd look at is cluster connectors, and then wiring between cluster and PCM.

Why use a cam that makes it's power outside the range you're willing to rev to?

Why build a new bottom end to a 6200 rpm target that a worn out stock bottom end can handle all day long?

Why use a cam that, 10 years ago, was old tech that was being beaten across the board by other cams?

Sorry if you've already answered these, I don't follow this board closely...

I used the DEI 712t. No external relays required.

I also used the DEI window control module, and it has been glitchy as hell. Which I'm inclined to blame more on GM than DEI.

C4 ABS is very forgiving of height differences.

Tons of us have run 1" or more stagger front-rear (i.e., >7%) with no problems.

Corvette Recycling are great guys. You'll find tons of people on CF who have bought from them. Don't think I've ever seen a complaint. I've bought several NOS parts from them - radiator & brakes mostly.

For the fuel sender, though, a brand new one from a GM dealer runs $250 so for the small savings I would go with the new one rather than the one that has been sitting on the shelf for 10-15 years.

Better yet:

Aftermarket computers for the 6L80E have been coming "any day now" for the last 5 or 6 years.

Until "any day now" comes, all you need to run it is the LSx and PCM it came with.

I just ran across these on ebay:

Tempted to buy them but too many unknowns to try to deal with long distance / last minute (poor pictures, crazy shipping quote, unknown offsets).

Probably worth buying and flipping if you are local -- depending on condition, they're worth $1500-2500.

Those are base 94-96 seats.

Aren't the seat frames the same for all years? In which case all you do is install the plastic/leather part on your existing frames.

While we're on the topic, those of you with original mounts on your LT1 need to inspect them. I replaced mine last summer while doing a bunch of other work.

Had suspected sagging for years, and not only were they both saggy but one was split.

My motor mount heat wrapping is trashed! Worn away, torn away, sopped with oil and grease. Have any of you replaced the foil heat wrap successfully and where can you buy that. Is it a replaceable GM part?

I wrapped my mounts (bracket and all) with tape like this:

Not many miles on it, so can't speak to long term durability.

My original heat blankets were in good enough shape, but a major PITA to get on/off, plus I just don't like the idea of using something absorbent in an exterior application like that...
