Nice truck there, Will. My BIL has the Ecoboost and pulls a small trailer for his construction business. It's an impressive engine. You should see what they can do once they're tuned. Even better.

For sure, I have been checking out the modifications and tuning available for these. Both the 2.7 and 3.5 EcoBoost are capable of impressive power after tuning. Boost of any kind is easy power.

I might do a few basic bolt-ons. Cat back, catch can and air filter. Nothing that's going to void the warantee. I like the Corsa exhaust.... turbos whistle big tine but I also really like how quiet stock is.

My other daily driver the CTS-V has a B&B exhaust and its loud as heck.... do I really need that on both? Do my neighbors really need that every morning regardless of which vehicle I drive to work? Hard questions, I never would have asked when I was younger... LOL

Drove it a couple hundred miles to watch a race in southern Va yesterday. Mostly all hwy 75mph with very light traffic that was stop and go in a couple of spots. Anyway 23.8mpg average for the trip. Anytime I would go 80mph, i could tell it was dropping under 23mpg.

326miles on it and happy so far. Side steps and quad fold bed cover enroute.

My 92 did the same thing..... I never worried about it.
I have noticed it on a couple of other LTX cars I built for other people.... it bothered one guy so I fabricated a brace bracket down to the second header bolt, similar to the factory one, and it stopped enough to make him happy.

I don't know why your car didn't do it from the start but every one I have put headers on or taller valve covers where you remove the brace to the alternator and or the support rods that go to the manifold vibrated noticeably afterwards.

Well.... I traded the F350 last week. I just couldn't stand driving it. So massive..... so rough riding unloaded. Plus I decided against buying a new trailer bigger than 24ft, which really makes needing to have a 1 ton Duper Duty nill. I love the power and towing capabilities of the Super Duty but after a year of ownership I hated the rest of the truck.

The dealer made it super easy. I paid 54k for the F350 this time last year.... they gave me 54k trade in.... which gave me over 11k to put down on a new F150. Financed the F150 for 4yrs, which is what I had left on the 350 anyways, dropped my payment by $200 a month.... insurance went down like $150 a year too.

I was amazed at the towing capabilities of the new 3.5 EcoBoost. 400hp and 500tq. I knew that was was going to be the powerplant. Of course we get a bit of snow here near DC and I like camping so 4x4 was also a requirement. Factory tow pkg was also a requirement. After the base F350 interior, I wanted nicer... not King Ranch but nicer than a base work truck.

Found a nicely optioned F150 with the STX package that fit all those. The only thing that let me down is the 3.31 gears and open rear diff.... still as equipped my truck has the 7450 GVW package and can tow up to 11,300lbs. If it would have had 3.55 or 3.73 gears... 13,800 and 14,000 tow capacity.... however the 3.31 will get better mileage unloaded and 11,300 is enough to pull what I have and plan for the future.

Also this thing moves out. Turbos spool near instant and it pulls hard all the way to 6500rpm redline. Quiet as a mouse as well. Very nice truck. Hopefully it'll be reliable and the 2ndcGen 3.5s supposedly have a ton of head room for more power..... but I bought the optional 100k warantee just in case.

Martin Connelly won my class. They are from Kentucky and have a grey Mustang. Shawn Pelvor in Jon Kovias's car was runner up. I'm not sure where they are from but it's a teal Mustang.

Thanks Gurus.

Recently got back from Georgia racing at the last event of 2020. Pulled a 32ft V nose loaded with my Corvette and everything we needed for the race. Truck will pull it as fast I wanted to go, no problem but I kept itto 75mph somy brother didn't have to run his Dodge hard pulling his camper.

I averaged 15mpg towing loaded to the hilt. Averaged 21mpg unloaded driving 75mph down there and back home. It's averaging 18mpg around town but I don't have a ton of time checking that as mostly work from home right now.

We did decent at the race. Qualified 11th in the 32 car field.... 44 cars attempted to make it in and everyone brought their best stuff. My car was wheel standing something fierce all week, it'll do that as we were really cranking the power trying to keep up with these guys and I was worried as I know how easily my car can get up on the bumper..... Just missed the top 10. We were 9th on the field comfortably and decided to play it safe on the last qualifying pass and others went for it. We got bumped 2 spots by a few tenths.

I didn't want my brother taking that ride/flight potentially tearing my car up, so in eliminations out of desperation I got the front shock adjustment too tight and the car struck the tires right after the hit. I felt bad to loose like that but we weren't going to outrun the guy anyway....he made a killer pass faster than my car has ever been in this trim.

Looking forward to the 2021 season now that I have a HD truck to pull the load.

Bought myself a new truck. I looked at all of the 3/4 and 1 ton models. As much as I hate to admit it, Ford has GM and FCA covered in the HD truck market.

Its a base Model XL crew cab short box 4x4. Only options are 3.55 gears and electronic locking rear differential. Honestly I would love to have a King Ranch but all trucks are unbelievably expensive these days and the Diesel engine is an additional $10,500 option in thr F250/350.

This is a big step down in comfort from my 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 z71, which was loaded but I need a bigger truck with serious towing capabilities and the F350 delivers. I really haven't been driving the Sierra much since I paid it off 2yrs ago and bought a 2009 Caddy CTS-V to daily.

BTW I got $18,500 for the 2013 Seirra with 87k miles on it.... not bad and I used that money to pay off my Caddy and was able to put 5 grand down on the F350. Carmax told me that the used truck market is on fire and that a niced used z71 like mine will sell in no time.

Anyway the F350. Its powerful and the 10spd is quite smooth. It's quiet for a diesel engine and you'd think the big 6.7 Powerstroke would be noisey but its a world away from those old bangy/clangy 7.3 Diesels.... refined is almost the word I'd use to describe it.... Almost, it's still unmistakable as a diesel. Did I mention the POWER?
It'll light the tires up effortlessly at WOT with the traction control off.

The ride is truck like for sure but not much worse than the 1500 Sierra z71 was. My 03 Avalanche 4x4 was a big comfy couch by comparison to the Sierra and the F350 is just a touch stiffer again. It drives straight and effortless. Seemingly the turning radius is better than the Sierra despite it being way bigger. Coming from the Avalanche, I never got good at parking the Sierra but so far I can park this new F350 with minimal effort.

Build quality seems good but it's hard to mess up the cheapest interior stuff like a big rubber floor mat and cloth seats, (which are comfy). The paint is immaculate... no orange peel slick as glass which is impressive considering the body is aluminium on the Fords.... the panel fit is utilitarian at best. Gaps are even but there is a lot of bow in the aluminium panels and they all stick out at the back.

I'll be using it to pull my race car of course. Looking at an enclosed trailer for these multiday races we have been attending this year. Need to be able to lock the car up overnight and carry more tools/stuff which you can't do with an open trailer. I had towed my car in a buddies 24ft enclosed trailer a few times with the Sierra and it wasn't terrible but you could tell it was overloaded. After using my brothers Dodge 3500 to tow it in his 32ft enclosed, there was no comparison.... it was much like towing my 18ft open trailer behind my old 1500. After that experience, I was never going to use my 1500 to pull an enclosed trailer again.

So the search began and here it is.

We only had about 10 kids this year....

Trick or Treaters have been declining in my hood steadily over the past 9 years we have lived here.

Oh well... We have a huge bowl of candy bars and a unopened bag in reserve to eat.

Getting ready to head out to the track for my Friday night make up race....

Q1 starts at 6 but because of DC area traffic I got to leave work at 1 ish to make it there in time to get everything set up...

No big changes, just wanting to go down the track first qualifying pass (we only get 1 this race) with a decent time and not be in the bottom of the field again for eliminations.

Serious struggles in qualifying with of all things the fricken Nitrous WOT switch not touching the carb linkage.

Wasted both qualifying passes screwing with adjusting it before going to the old standby.... a piece of rubber hose slid over the switch arm.

Q1 ran a 6.21@121MPH. The car left on motor until it hit a bump in the surface which jiggled the switch enough for the nitrous to come on about 80ft out. That nearly wrecking the car but I held on to it.

Q2 ran a 6.30@122MPH. The nitrous came on at the hit like it's supposed to, but I had the front suspension limiters too tight and the car spun the tires at the hit.... which popped it into high gear about 30ft out and after I pedaled it to hook it up the car rattle the tires so bad down track the switch kept turning the nitrous on/off/on/off/on all the way down the track.

So with a 6.21 I ended up qualified 8th out of 15 cars.... Hard to believe other 7 drivers were having a worse day than me trying to qualify but it's true. Like I said, we resorted to sliding a piece of rubber hose over the switch arm for E1.

For eliminations, I didn't mess with anything on the tune up. I just wanted the car to make a complete pass so I could get some data.... I did loosen the front suspension limiters one link but left eh front shock rebound full tight.

As far as the tune up. Very easy. I call it "Grandma" because it's so slow even Grandma could make a pass in the car.

Nitrous progressive controller was 10%-15% in .25 second and 15% to 100% all in by 1 second.

Timing ramp was 40*, then dumping -11* at the hit and another -15* .60 sec into the run for a total of 14* going down track.

When I let go of the brake in E1 I knew it was going to be a good pass. The car felt much faster than I thought it would... and I was side by side with my opponent who has an unbelievably fast car (former N/Aa record holder).... he cut a .032 light to my .060 and he had a fender on me the entire pass until high gear, where I crept to within a bumper but with his better light, I just didn't have enough top end charge to get the win.

RT ---- .060
60ft --- 1.230
330ft --- 3.456
1/8th --- 5.327
MPH ----- 132.57

So it sucked to loose in the first round but I was super happy with the ET and MPH the car posted on it's very first full on NO2 pass. I got some great data and there is so much ET to be had by just getting some power in the car earlier in the run. There is also more power to be had by leaning out the nitrous AFR a little as it was pig rich at 11.3 AFR on that pass....

Next race is Friday in 2 weeks August 24. I am excited to get back out there and whittle the ET down to match the MPH.... With some work I hope to get that 5.1X pass before the end of the season.

Next race, I plan to knock some fuel pressure out of the nitrous kit's fuel side and add a little power earlier in the run with the progressive controller... maybe something like 10% to 30% in .25 sec and all in by .75 sec. Gonna work my way up to that a little at a time thou.... don't need anymore smashed oil pans.

Here's video from E1.

I got the engine fixed and installed it back in the 84 last week. Got it running Friday with no drama.

Kinda impromptu, I took it to Test and Tune at Capital Dragway Sunday. I have not been there since 2011 when I took the 92 over there for a Corvette Club day..... It's a nice place, I really don't know why I do not race there more often.

My brother in law has a new to him 1979 Malibu with a 400 SBC that he wanted to test out.... so I figured why not go and help him maybe make a few hits with my car and make sure the carb jetting is still good.

They were supposed to have some No Time car practice and a bracket race. I figured with the N/T cars and a real race going on, the track prep would be really good.... Turned out it totally sucked.... about as much traction as a soapy car wash stall. It was deathly hot in the mid 90's*F too.... Track temp was 140*F.

I watched the N/T cars attempt to make hits and all just spun the tires. I decided to make a motor pass and we would wait and see if the track came around.

I have the rev limited set down to 7500RPM to take it easy on the new engine. The pass was easy with no drama.

1.49 --- 60ft
4.28 --- 330ft
6.57 --- 1/8th mile
109.15 MPH
8.55 --- 1000ft
10.20 --- 1/4 mile
139.43 MPH

What was apparent midway thru the pass was that I may have set the rev limiter down to 7500 but the air shifter was still set to 7800RPM. Car was on the limiter in high gear for about 3-400 feet as well.

We waited and watched but the track didn't get any better.... N/T cars were all blowing the tires off. By 6:00 PM it had dropped to about 80*F I decided to make one more pass with the 84.

1.48 --- 60ft
4.26 --- 330ft
6.53 --- 1/8th mile
109.95 MPH
8.49 --- 1000ft
10.13 --- 1/4 mile
140.15 MPH

So much time passed from my first pass, watching and helping my brother in law with his car, as well as a guy with a dragster next to us that broke a bolt off in the end of the crankshaft.... I totally forgot to reset the shifter RPM. Again the car was on the limiter in high gear for quite some time.

All in all it's pretty good... I don't expect the car to be very fast off the bottle... the rest of the car (gear and converter) just isn't set up to take advantage of the engines N/A power band. The ET didn't change much from me running my licensing passes on 6cyls either but the MPH did jump from 135 to 140 and the weather was much cooler first time out, so that is showing quite an improvement.

On both passes AFR was indicated at 12.6ish in high gear so carb jetting is good to go.... bit rich for max N/A power but it was really hot and it's a good start to be tuning the nitrous kit from.

Saturday the 11th is my first official race. Excited to get on some fly paper track prep, turn the nitrous on and see the car really get down doing what it's built to do.

Well I am going to miss the first race of the season.

I went Friday to renew my NHRA Competition License.

Ran the car N/A on motor as I just need to make 3 passes and 2 of them only had to go faster than 135 MPH.....

Well after pass 3 as I came back around to the pit I noticed the vacuum gauge was pegged on 0 and quite a bit of smoke coming from the vent tank for the vacuum pump.

Turns out we damaged the engine very bad in GA testing back in March and it had a few pistons that were just barley hanging on by a fingernail.... running the car hard for a few 11/4 mile passes finished them off.

When things go bad on nitrous they really go badly. I got the car unloaded Sat and leaked the engine down.

Cyls 1,2,3,4,6 are ZERO leakage.

Cyl 5 is 65% leakage.
Cyl 7 is 40% leakage.
Cyl 8 is 25% leakage.

So bad, bad, bad.

Inspection camera video looks real bad in the 3 affected cyls, as there is lots of vertical scoring on the cyl walls and plenty of aluminum transfer showing at TDC.

My brother-in-Law is going to help me pull the engine out tomorrow and I will have to take it down to the family's shop in Ga next week. We will pull it apart and see if it can be saved at the current bore size or if it's going to need more work than just a hone and slamming some new pistons/rings in it.

I was hoping to have some cool video and great results to report back to the forum.

FYI ET on motor running on the better part of 6 cyls.....

10.20@137MPH - 1/4 mile. 6.60@108MPH - 1/8th mile. 1.50 60ft.

Obviously 60ft and 1/8 mile ET are terrible because of the transmission gearing (2 speed PG 1.69 to 1 low gear 1.0 to 1 high gear) and TQ converter which are set up for nitrous.... the new 4.29 rear gear did put me at about 7800RPM going thru the 1/4 traps.

Well we got a lot more work to do....

We should have tested the car before taking it to a big race. There just was not enough practice time before eliminations started to get everything sorted out.

On my one practice run, I had problems with the nitrous switch not touching the carb linkage... not even sure how that got messed up because it lined up and worked fine for 2yrs before this.

The nitrous was working in 1st round eliminations and I cut a great light but I could tell the car wasn't pulling very hard and he quickly caught me.... I glanced at the AF reading and it was just off the map lean... I initially thought my Wide Band O2 was messed up because it was reading 14.7 going down the track.... but I went a head, lifted and coasted to the end... I could tell something was wrong and he was already past me so the race was over, no reason to hurt something.

We went back and changed some stuff on the fuel pressure and made a test pass but again the AF was 14.4 before the sensor burned up and the controller gave me the error code for voltage out of range.... So I had to lift early or risk hurting the engine.

We again tried to put more fuel to it and make another test pass between rounds but again we were unsuccessful and the AF was 14 something before the controller gave the voltage range error code again..... No doubt the heat burned the O2 sensor up.

So we are pulling the intake/nitrous kit off it tonight and sending it out to a different company to get fixed... I have had a lot of tuning issues with this kit from day one and it even cost me a set of pistons a few years ago.... It's just time to move on and let someone else take a swing at fixing it.

The engine was running fine when we loaded up to go home and again when I unloaded it the next morning..... but we are still going to leak down test it just to make sure.

Hope to have the intake and kit back in a few weeks and then we will do some more testing.

We did have a good time at the race. Middle Ga Motorsports Park puts on a good show. The track was prepped very good and the they kept the show interesting and constantly moving with numerous grudge races and test passes between elimination rounds.

For sure we will get this sorted out and be back.

Driving to Georgia this evening after work. 10hr drive all thu the night... not looking forward to it.

Going to work on the car Friday and sort out a few very minor details....

1) I need to program the timing retard values into my ignition box.
2)I need to set the front end toe.
3) After that I need to weight the car with me in the seat to verify the F/R percentages but the preliminary weigh in (with my brother in the seat) showed the changes we made to the chassis moved a bunch of weight forward - which was the goal.

So... I labeled this as "Pre Season Testing" because it's before my regular MPC Real Street racing starts and I am testing but we are doing this at an actual race.....

Saturday we are taking the car to the "1 Shot 1 Kill" No Time small tire nitrous race at Middle Georgia Motorsports Park in Macon Ga. It's put on by the guy that did some chassis work on my car last winter Scott Milner at Coupe Performance.

It's a big race, with a lot of heavy hitters - So no pressure to perform right off the trailer, after a year of nothing but major changes to the car and no testing what-so-ever.... LOL.

I am excited. Ready to get the car out there and see what we got on our hands this season.

Thanks!

I have really enjoyed building and racing this engine (and car) over the past few years. As well as being able to share my success and failures with all of you that read my post here.

Stay tuned to the drag racing section. I have an entire Season of racing results and updates coming. Season starts May 19, but I will be doing some (hopefully lots) pre season testing in the months till then.

We put in a ton of work on the dyno.

The engine tuned and ran very well on VP C23 fuel with my AED carburetor which is what I intend to race the car with this season. AF curve was beautiful. 12.7@4900RPM tapering to 12.9@7500RPM.

785HP@7400RPM 614TQ@6200RP.

Now many may think this is a high RPM engine and it is but it still puts down over 500TQ@4500RPM the lowest RPM I pulled it (you don't normally start a dyno pull on a racing engine very far below peak TQ). It also carries 500TQ to nearly 8,000RPM. Very flat TQ curve for an engine of this magnitude.

The engine was not happy on VP Q16 fuel at all. Spent alot of time fooling with jetting and air bleds in both my AED and C&S carburetors to no avail.... the fuel curve looked horrific no matter what I did. Starting out around 12.5@5000RPM then going pig rich 11.5@6000RPM and then tapering to lean at 13.2@7500RPM.

Still made 773HP@7000RPM 613TQ@6200RPM with the C&S.

Made 562HP@7000RPM and 602TQ@5600RPM with the AED.

Both carburetor companies said I was wasting my time trying to run oxgenated fuel in a carburetor not built specifically for it.... had to prove it to myself and I guess I did.

The engine may have been able to touch 800HP with a proper Q16 carburetor... but we will never know.

All and all I thrilled with the engine and the changes I made to it. This is the end of me developing this engine. I am going to run it few more years and begin development of something "Bigger and Better" next year. I hope to have "Bigger and Better" in the car for the 2020 season.

Thanks for all the support. I hope everybody enjoyed the glimpse into what it takes to make this kind of power with 1955 technology.

While waiting for the dyno schedule to clear out, we did some more fitting and fabrication to the car itself.

Dropped the engine in place and built a bracket to mount the new remote water pump and fabricated the new -12AN lines from the engine to the pump.

https://imgur.com/ZyV4JFx

Fits in there real nice.

Also put the new rear center section with the 4.30 gears under it but it looks just like the old one so no pics....

We still have to fabricate some support braces for the rear of the body as it's starting to crack on the rear quarter panel at the B pillar.... I think it's caused from a combo of the car hitting the rear bumper so hard a few times and the fact that we cut the rear deck out to fit the 3 link/straight rear under there.

Also finishing up the re-wire as far as moving the battery up to in the front of the radiator.... had to get a remote relay for the battery cut off switch.... waiting on some cable ends and it will be complete.

More to come as we complete it.

Well the engine is almost back together and we will be going back on the dyno in few weeks.

Had a minor problem with the Titan oil pump, which ate a thrust shim.... nothing serious damage wise just need a new shim.... Some minor wear on the aluminum housing but nothing that will hurt anything.

https://imgur.com/HLBz1CV

https://imgur.com/KQl8liy

The serious part came when I called Titan Engineering only to find they lost everything (Home, Shop - Everything burned to the ground) in the Ca wild fires just before Christmas.

I was able to get a new shim (actually a box of them) from Mcmaster Carr.

We got the accessory drive with the Alternator and Vacuum Pump sorted with the new motor plate. Amazingly we didn't have to change anything. Same short drive mandrel and same brackets for the accessories. Minor whittling on the motor plate some for clearance and drilling and tapping a few holes was all it took.

https://imgur.com/uRXSK8e

I also changed the appearance of the engine a little this year. I had the Intake and Valve covers powder coated grey.... I asked for light grey, was expecting some kind of metallic but got this... No complaints, it looks nice and does away with the murdered out look everyone else has these days.

https://imgur.com/fdeDQnC

https://imgur.com/KC4S2GI

We also finally changed the rear header tube on the drivers side.... so tired of getting burned and fighting to get a wrench in there every time I change that plug. Also had the headers coated with high temp ceramic as they were starting to look pretty rough (originally they are just painted silver from Stahl).

I don't have a pic of the original tube route off the flange here but it actually touched the plug wire boot.

https://imgur.com/W6eZhcU

https://imgur.com/ykGf6XA

Finished product looks great.

https://imgur.com/BkK9MvS

I'll let you know how it does on the dyno in a few weeks. Got a few different fuels (VP C23 and Q16) and 2 big carbs... My new (well new 2yrs ago) AED Dominator and my brothers C&S Aerosol Billet Dominator.

Anything better than the 755HP it put down last time is gonna be great.

Wow, a year.

I dont get on these forums that much these days but noticed he had not been posting here for a long time.

I will always be greatful of the Q Jet carb he gave to me a few yrs ago to help fix my wifes 79. That really shows the kind of man he was.... he wouldnt take a dime beyond shipping cost for it.

He was a fellow racer and we chatted a lot back and forth about our racing exploits espc since I currently race in the area and at the tracks where he grew up.

RIP Bill H.

Got the intake manifold completed.

I got sidetracked with 2 other things.

(1) Fooling around with my cyl heads as they needed to be surfaced to clean up some minor brinneling from the head gaskets.

(2) going with my dad to help customers (3 of them) at the dirt oval track (Senoia Speedway) Saturday night.... worked out well for the shop cars.

Our Hobby car finished 2nd in the race and wrapped up the season points championship with 3 races still left.

Our Crate Late Model also finished 2nd in the race and also wrapped up the seasons point championship.

Our Limited Late Model ended up finishing 5th in the race. He's like 7th in the points. Not bad for him, as he is only in his second season as a race car driver period and he's competing in one of the top classes. He should have started out in Hobby or something less demanding/competitive to gain driving experience but it's his money. We only build the engine.

I haven't been to a dirt oval race in a long time and if I go again anytime soon, I will be temped to sell the drag car and build myself a Late Model.

I use to hot lap my dads Super Late Model when I was 16-17yrs old and had a Hobby car that I raced weekly back then.... I haven't driven on dirt in over 20yrs.... I wonder if I could still be competitive?

Here is a Go Pro video from the Limited car. Race starts at 4:55

Will, are the carb issues all sorted out?

Matt,
While I did have one issue year before last, where moisture and evaporated fuel messed up one of my carbs....

I actually figured out the problem that I was having, right before the last race of last season. Sucks because I chased it all season and learned almost nothing about tuning the car.

Turned out to be a problem with the MSD distributor. The top plate for the advance had worked itself loose.... In a race car you remove the weights and springs, and use a little stud/nut to lock the advance out....

Well over time the vibration had loosened it up enough so that when I had the car on the 2 step it would back the timing up causing the car to stumble or backfire when I let go of the 2 step/trans brake.... or worse the car would leave on no power and then do a huge wheel stand the very next pass when I changed the tune up to compensate....

It was a seriously tough problem to find because it was so inconsistant. Sometimes the car would make a decent pass and then go to crap.... when I checked the timing it would be off in left field and othertimes it would actually move back to where I set it....

The plate was loose enough to move when up on the 2 step.... but it took alot of effort to move it by hand and even thou I checked by twisted on it and the rotor a few times I never felt it move until right before the last race.

I tightened it up, reset the timing and it was a totally new car the last time I raced it.

Just another little update.

Heading to Georgia tomorrow to work some more on the car.

I built a totally new 3rd member for the 9" rear end, that I need to install.

I was just going to put a new 3.89 ring and pinion in the old 3rd member but decided it never hurts to have extra parts.... $1300.00 bucks to have extra parts....

The new one is a Yukon aluminum thru bolt housing, 4.30 Pro Gears, new light weight 35 spline spool. Pretty much same 3rd member as I currently have except 4.30 vs 3.89 ratio and the new gear set is a special light weight design and made of 9130 high impact material.... no complaints about the regular old gears I was running thou. Got 2 yrs out of that R&P set before it cratered the drive face.... and I do already have a new 3.89 R&P set to make it like new... like I said extra parts....

So why the gear ratio change? Because I also ordered a new Powerglide transmission with a 1.69 low gear ratio. That set me back $3500.00.... So my old 1.80 ratio Powerglide is going to be relegated to extra parts.

So those are some pretty serious upgrades, but I didnt race at all this year so might as well spend that saved $$$$ on worth while parts that will make the car faster.

Now the new 4.30 gear and 1.69 PG combo are going to keep from making any more 1/4 mile passes. Its going to be a bunch better in the 1/8 mile thou and since I mostly race 1/8 mile, thats what we need to focus on.

I need to finish up a little work on the intake manifold. We will see how much I dan get done.

Thanks Matt.

It's funny because I stopped using Photobucket mostly because of issues with them.....

IF you can't fix them I'll upload them to Photobucket and repost.

People will want to see these little billet aluminum works of art.

After some miscommunication and technical difficulties that put me way behind, I now have new pistons.... Definitely worth the wait and trouble.

Now to bore and hone the block.....

Pretty much screwed for class racing this season. Hoping to get it back together so I can use the rest of this year to test and see where else I can improve the rest of the car.

Not a lot going on right now with the car.

My new tires came in Friday. New MT 275 Pro Radials for the rear and MT 26X4.0-15's for the front.

We had a heck of a time with the CNC guy about getting the CAD file for the combustion chamber so we can have the pistons made.... Dude is difficult to work with...

So said screw it and ended up making a mold of the cyl heads combustion chamber once I got the heads back.... actually we made (2) molds because.... with the advent of CNC haven't had to make one in about 10yrs... so was kinda rusty at it and screwed the first mold up.

Second mold came out great and it's on it's way to the piston mfgr now. Should have the new pistons in 2 weeks.

We have everything else to put the engine back together.... everything else has already been measured and clearances are verified/checked - except the pistons and bore. So once we have pistons it'll be fairly painless to bore/hone the block, file fit the rings, clean the block up and assemble. Then off to the dyno!

Car wise.... still got to set up the new rear end gear, mount the new tires, and wire the car for the new ignition box. Relatively simple and short lead time work.

Also have to cut the front part of the passenger side exhaust pipe off and weld a new 3.5" slip connector on it.... It's bashed up pretty good and doesn't hold tight to the header collector with the band clamp anymore.

A lot of work done and a lot still to go before May 13th.

Was going to drive the 72 to work this morning but the battery was 100% flat dead. Jumper pack wouldn't turn it over but it did reveal I left the radio on whenever I drove it last (couple months ago).... some how when the radio switch is on, it draws even thou the radio goes off when the key is turned off.

I just bought that fricken battery a few months ago too. Hope I can bring it back with a just a slow 2amp charge. If not I'm sure it's still under warranty (Interstate from Costco).

With the weather nice I planned on driving it today and knew I should have went out in the garage and checked on the car last night.

That's what I get for being lazy.

I spent this weekend working on my intake manifold. For some reason I figured I'd just take the intake back home with me and convert the carb flange from 4150 to 4500 by hand.....

Kind of a bad idea as I have my trusty Milwaukee grinder, some burrs and cartridge rolls/mandrels but I seriously lack any type of porting bench.

I used the utility rack on my 4 wheeler in the backyard for a porting bench.

I took this pic when I was about halfway done roughing the shape in.

Resized Image

You can see from the previous work I did to the plenum (I opened the plenum up .400" from as cast with my dads Bridgeport and then fixed the runner entry's) I still had to remove about 1/4" from the sides and 1/2" from the corners to convert it to get it big enough for the Dominator (Holley 4500).... then fix the runner entry's without hitting air.

Pushing the upper runner entry's back as far as I can into a nice radius. You can see I got the collet of the grinder into the flange a bit there.... non critical area so no biggie. I think I had everything roughed in at this point and was about to start my "finish work"....

Resized Image

It's hard to see but I also reworked the runner divider that extends into the plenum. Once I got the plenum corners cut back far enough it was looking to me like a hindrance to the inner (4) runners as far as line of sight, so I cut it down and changed the shape a little to uncover the inner runner more. I could still do more in this regard but I don't want to stray too far from the factory design as it's made good power so far.

I didn't take too many pics of this work because it's really tedious work and hard to stop and take pics of different steps but I took this shot of the completed project with the finish work completed and a small 1/2" spacer pinned in place on top of the plenum.

Resized Image

I still might go back and try to put a steeper radius on the upper runner entry's but the intake is getting pretty thin in a few places and I don't want to have to weld it up.

Now last year I ran a 2" tapered spacer when I switched from a 4150 to 4500 Dominator carb but it placed the carb too close to the bottom of the hood for my linking. I already have a 6" cowl scoop on the hood, so it's not like I can add anything else without it being taller than the roof.

Converting the intake manifold flange to the Holley 4500 pattern seemed like the best solution so that's what I did. With just the 1/2" spacer on top it'll be back to the same hood clearance I had with the 4150 carb.

We'll see how it works out on the dyno and on the track in a few months.

Stock timing cover will be fine.

Factory BBC timing covers have lots of room to clear double roller chains and the cam thrust button.

I've never had any issues with the factorytiming cover.

I don't have any dyno of that cam in a BBC. Most of the BBC's we build are very serious engines and the customer base isn't very interested in me giving out their info... not that it could be applied to what you are doing anyway. We do build a few street type SBC's that use hyd roller cams....

So I do have similar grinds in a couple 383 cubic inch SBC's that I can link dyno and track results to.

Both of these are C4 Corvettes with 4L60 auto transmissions, 3000 stall converters and D44 IRS rear ends.

The first one was pretty mild build with 11.2 compression and AFR 195 street heads. He engine dyno'd it and then later put it on a chassis dyno when he was having the EFI tuned.

530HP@6100RPM (Stuska Engine Dyno)
411RWHP@6400RPM (Duno Jet chassis dyno)

http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/c ... 9-383-afr-195-dyno-s.html

The second had better AFR 210 cyl head and 11.5 compression. It's only been on a chassis dyno when it had the EFI tuned.

463RWHP@6300RPM (Dyno Jet chassis dyno)

http://www.corvetteforum.guru/modules ... id=214682#forumpost214682

The first car has run 11.40 @ 120MPH in the 1/4.

The second car has run 11.19 @ 125MPH in the 1/4 mile.

http://www.corvetteforum.guru/modules ... id=223403#forumpost223403

And let me tell you.... both of these cars hit a nice lick at idle but drive like pussy cats until you open the throttle wide open.... then they get down.

Now the first guy has a buddy with a 69 Nova I also did a cam for. 11.1 383 SBC AFR 195's. Carb'd engine, single AED 750. TH400 3800rpm stall with 4.11 gears.

The cam I did for it is the identical lobe set to what I recommended for your dads 427 but on different lobe centers.

That car has been 11.00's @ 120MPH in the 1/4.

I have a similar grind going in the 496 BBC I am currently building for my 72 Corvette. I'm building it to be a replica of a stock appearing 71 LS-6 BBC. I'm expecting that it will make about 625HP but it will be a really good piece that will have a lot of little tricks in it.

11.1 compression will be fine on pump gas with either of those cams.

Something else that I think would be a good idea to change would be the timing set (chain & gears).

Cloyes PN 9-3610TX9 would be my preferred.

Hi Coach,

Wow. An L89 is a pretty rare and desirable engine in the 69. I'm surprised your dad would want to modify one.

Since the L89 came from the factory with Aluminum cyl heads they are already equipped with hardened seat inserts. So honestly you should only need to have the proper valve springs installed and replace any wear items (ie seals or guides) before you install them with the new hyd roller cam. I'd be interested to know what the machine shop you are dealing with told you....

As for converting to a hyd roller cam from the current flat tappet solid lifter. It's a pretty straight forward conversion.

You will need the new roller cam, new roller lifters, new appropriate length pushrods and proper valve springs/retainers/locks.

I have most of my camshafts ground by Mike Jones at Jones Cam Designs. They are in Denver NC. All Jones cams are custom grinds.

http://jonescams.com/

As for specifications given the rest of the engine and your dads expectations.

I would recommend these 2 lobe profiles.

EHR72360/EHR74365

The entire cam specifications as I recommend it be ground would be:

280/288@.006
234/242@.050
.612/.620 lift w/1.7 rockers (stock rocker ratio)
108 ICL with 112 LSA.

This cam would give a very similar sound at idle to the factory L89 cam, better part throttle driveability, more power and no maintenance.

For off the shelf camshaft something like the Howards Cams PN 120405-12 would also be a good choice.

For the Hyd roller lifters I would recommend Morel PN - 5374 or the Howards Cams PN 91161.

For Valve springs, retainers and locks I would recommend Competition Products. PN - VSA14.

For Pushrods I would recommend Manley. Pushrods would have to be measured for the proper lengths once the cam, lifters and cyl heads are installed.

Of course you would need new head gaskets and intake gaskets. Some silicone and possibly carb gaskets.

I'll be glad to answer any other questions you may have about my recomendations or help you with your project in any way I can.

Hey Gurus. Just normal work day for me going on here.

Lots of people on the roads going to the inauguration tomorrow.

I got a little work done on the car last weekend and posted pics in my thready. On the engine, I'm waiting for my cyl head guy to get with my piston guy about the combustion chamber CAD file so he can finish up the pistons..... I got the rest of the engine parts and am chomping aat the bit to start machining the block...

The driving school sounds like fun Andy. Congrats!

Few more pics.

I actually drove down to GA and did the front coilover conversation myself.

The upper mount is a prefab piece sold from many oval track supply companies. I shortened it to fit on the factory shock tower and to be the correct length... then welded a back plate on it to add a little strength and give me more area to weld it on shock tower with.

Resized Image

Here's a back shot of it welded to the shock tower.

Few side shots with the coilover in place.

I TIG welded everything. IMO I'm barely passable as a welder or fabricator and I'm sure a real fabricator could do nicer work, but this was something I just had to do for myself....

I've seen so many people do these coilover conversations and always thought that there was a much cleaner way to do it....

BTW all the factory plastic splash shields and inner fender pieces fit right back in place no problem.

My phone camera doesn't really capture the detail of how good this worked out and looks.

The shock tower still needs a smidge trimmed on the backside to clear the spring and the rest of the seams welded where the factory shock tower is spot and interval welded to the side of the frame... gonna let my brother use MIG to do that as that's what the factory used.

Hope everyone likes my work and the design is used gives you ideas if your interested in doing a front coilover conversion.

I also relocated the battery box/tray to the front off the baciside of the front bumper crash bar but didn't take any pics. Also fabricated a removable wire cage that mounts my new stand up nitrous bottle bracket to the passenger seat. Just got it done before I had to drive back home.

More to follow as I or my brother have time to work on it.

Lots of work there! Did you solve the bogging issue?

Yea. For my part it wasn't that bad. We have had this car apart a couple of times so we know what to do. The driving distance involved and short time table was the worst part of it.

On the chassis I am amazed that he got everything knocked out in just a few days... Even came in $500 under budget, because it turned out to be less work than he thought it might be. Super nice and honest guy, he could have just kept the car an extra week, delivered it when he promised and no one would have been the wiser.

The bogging was entirely timing related.

I found that the top plate on my MSD distributor had come loose and was retarding the timing... when the car was on the 2 step the timing would jump back and forth.

It was a totally different car at the last race with that fixed.

Plan is to keep the compression ratio at 13.1 SCR but the new pistons will have a bigger dome on them because I am going to open the quench distance up more with a thicker head gasket as compared to the current configuration.

The pistons are going to be a totally different design. Next week I will be at PRI and will be talking to GIBTEC Pistons about what I want to do v/s what they think I get away with doing.

My biggest concern is the ring package. Right now I have a .043-1/16-3/16 and I want to go with a .043-.043-3mm.

I plan to make some fairly large physical and functional design changes to the piston as well....

I plan to keep the vertical gas ported top ring land but want to do away with the accumulator groove between the top and second ring... that was the point of failure last time with my current Diamond Pistons.

I want to use a little shorter wrist pin and use round wire lock retainers v/s the double wound spiro-locks I have now. This will allow me to use a thicker stronger pin at the same weight as current... or move some weight around to the piston if needed.

The dome/valve reliefs will be a mirror image of the combustion chamber instead of the generic dome/valve reliefs I have now.

Lastly I want to use a piston guided connecting rod.... instead of the traditional crank cheek guided rods. This is a big deal in max effort Naturally Aspirated engines... I want to see if it will work as well in power adder engines too.

FYI her is a link to GIBTEC Pistons in case anyone is interested. All of their pistons are billet. We started using them in all our max effort stuff 2yrs ago and they are the best people I have ever worked with in regard to piston/ring design.

http://gibtecpistons.com/

The cyl heads are going to be freshened up with new valve springs/retainers/locks. The valve job on the intake is going to be touched up lightly. The exhaust port is going to get some additional work as well as a totally different valve job which will be better suited to my use of nitrous as a power adder. Like wise the combustion chamber is going to have the quench areas hit with a "softening cut", which will help widen my tuning window with the bigger doses of nitrous to come in 2017.

I am going to run the current camshaft at least another year. It was designed for a little more power than I am making now and I need a common point of reference with all the changes to the cyl heads and induction system we made this year and next year.

I am really excited for next season. I think these changes I am making to the engine are going to be worth a surprising amount of power.... That extra power with the changes to the chassis should really make the car much, much faster. You will have to come out to the track with me again.
Will

I got the 84 torn apart a few weeks ago. This was a pretty serious thrash as I only had 3 days to tow the car to Georgia, get the engine and trans out as well as disassemble most of the front body plastic stuff, disassemble and inspect the engine and then drive home back to DC.

You can see I have car and engine parts everywhere as we blew it apart as fast as possible... I snapped a pic once everything was apart and we were getting ready to inspect put all the engine parts on the shelf.

We have just been waiting to drop her off for her appointment with the chassis shop, which was Tuesday. The chassis builder has been sending me pics every day of the progress. The work is being done by Coupe Performance in Covington, Georgia.

New front motor plate.

Pinto manual rack and pinion steering conversion... as well as the cross member which has now been clearance a little for a bigger oil pan should I want one in the future and you can see it's had the factory motor mount towers and rack mounts all cut off.

My brother is going to do the new coilover shock conversion for the font suspension himself as well as the mounting of the battery in front of the radiator for better weight bias after the chassis guy is finished up with this stuff next week. I post pics when he gets started on that.

I am going to Indy next week for PRI. Going to cut a deal on the new pats I need for the engine update. Some new pistons and new roller lifters.

The cyl heads are at Chad Speier's of Speier Racing Heads in Kansas right now and he already has them apart inspecting them. He said the valve job looks mint after 3yrs! We are going to put new PAC springs and retainers/locks on them and he is updating the combustion chamber and exhaust port/valve job to make a little more power on nitrous.

A few other little updates happening this winter is the wiring of my new MSD 7531 ignition box (which is replacing my old trusty Mallory 685), new bigger aluminum radiator and remote mount PRP water pump.

With these changes and as great as the car was running at the end of this 2016 season, I have a feeling that 2017 is gonna be awesome.

Hope you like the pics and updates on my progress.... Thanks Gurus.

We ran the last points race of 2016 Saturday.

I was excited to put my learned info over this season to use one last time. The car showed so much potential the past 2 races...

I'm really focused ahead to next season after we redo somethings on the car this winter which will change the weight distribution but I knew if I could keep it off the back bumper it was going run pretty good at this last race.

For Q1 I had a very easy ramp in the Progressive Nitrous Controller.

15% flatlined for .3 second
15% to 100% all in by 1.00 second

Imagine my surprise when I get in the staging lanes and remember to turn the bottle on.... only 600psi of bottle pressure.... Great! I totally forgot to heat the bottle up. I do my burn out and stage the car knowing it's not going to be a good pass. I let go of the transbrake and almost nothing happened.... the car rolled off the line like a slug, slowly building speed and shifting into high gear right at the 1/8th mile lights....

6.75@99MPH

We go back to the pit and I heat the bottle up.... got 1100 psi of bottle pressure.

Q2. I don't change anything. do my burn out, purge the bottle down to 950psi and stage the car.... Let go of the transbrake and again.... nothing. Slow as molasses all the way down.

6.75@100MPH

We start trouble shooting everything, wiring, bottles, lines... finally I notice that the throttle linkage isn't touching the micro switch to activate the nitrous system... in fact I only have about 1/2 throttle.

Somehow the throttle cable stretched or the pedal bent during that huge wheelie I had last race because nothing else has moved. I re-adjust the cable bracket and everything is 5 by 5.... except I'm qualified dead last... and have the number 2 qualifier, current class ET record holder and current points leader in round 1... Yea his car is a beast.... I have no chance of beating him unless he red lights or breaks.

For E1 I decide to shorten my second ramp up a little.

15% flat lined for .3 second
15% to 100% in .90 second (more on this later)....

I do my burn out and purge the bottle down to 1050 psi.... Stage the car and this time when I let go of the transbrake it takes off... like it was shot out of a cannon. My opponent is no where to be seen until about 330ft... I can see him coming in the passenger mirror and he is flying. At the line we are dead even but I know he nipped me with all that MPH.

I get my time slip and:

5.408@129.75MPH with a 1.23 60ft.

A new personal best in ET and MPH. Infact I can't believe the MPH.... almost 130MPH is showing amazing HP for my combo.

He went a 5.20@135MPH with a 1.22 60ft... but he was so focased on letting me leave first (so he didn't redlight and throw the championship away) that I almost beat him with a .080 light.

So now I'm down to making test hits to trying and gather more data before we take the car apart. I really want to get a 5.3X pass.... and if it will go 130mph that would be great too....

I go to shorten my ramp up again... to my surprise in E1 I did not set my ramp to 15% to 100% in .90 second.... I actually set it 15% to 90% in 1.00 second. If you guys remember I have mixed those 2 inputs up before... I got to pay better attention to this stuff.

This time I set it to:

15% flat line for .3 second
15% to 100% all in by .85 second.

I also purge my bottle pressure down to the recommended 900 psi. The car leaves really soft.... I can feel everything is working right but it just feels slow compared to E1.

5.49@131MPH 1.30 60ft.

Ok we learned something. 60ft terrible with only 900psi of bottle but look at that 131MPH!.... crazy to me that it can go that fast.... I never once thought it had that kind of power. I go back and get more aggressive early with the ramp to make a second test hit.

15% to 25% in .3 second.
25% to 100% all in by .85 second.
900psi in the bottle again.

Car feels much faster this time. Espc at the hit. I think it's a great pass but....

5.47@128MPH 1.26 60ft.

OK now I'm lost again but that's where I am. LOL

Taking the car to the shop over the Veterans Day Holiday weekend and taking it apart.

(1) I am updating some small stuff in the engine. Pistons and rings along with some additional cyl head and intake manifold port work. Not alot of additional power to be gained here but I am mostly making these changes to get a little bigger tuning window....

(2) Of course there is some required engine maintenance replacement parts, like valve springs, retainers, locks and roller lifters which are all 3 yrs old now...

BTW that is Phenomenal life IMO from those PAC springs and Morel lifters. This engine has heavy steel valves, .850 lift cam and has turned 8200RPM every pass for 3 years without failure.

(3) I am switching the car over from the stock type side motor mounts to a front and mid motor plates.

(4) I am switching the ignition system over from the Mallory 685 to a MSD 7531 with the 7555 individual cyl timing control function.

(5) I am converting the front suspension over to Viking Crusader DA coil overs.

(6) I am moving the battery which is currently in the rear of the car to in front of the radiator.

(7) I have much bigger 3 core aluminum radiator and remote mount electric water pump.

I am hoping the combo of the battery (50lbs) the bigger radiator and WP and the coilovers will help keep the front end down so I can put BIG power to it at the hit.

(8) Kinda a maintenance thing but I have to put a new ring and pinion in the 9" rear... it's cupping out the drive face of the ring gear... so for a minimal up charge I'm upgrading to a REM polished and lightened gear set. Same 3.89 ratio.

I'll give updates as we go along with the work this winter and once we into preseason testing with the car.

Interesting discovery last night while checking general ignition things out....

My distributor rotor was held on by one screw.... My MSD Pro Billet distributor has a big cap conversion that uses a big Ford style cap and the bubble type rotor.... Well one screw was tight and the other screw as sitting in recess of the rotor not even threaded in...

The rotor wasn't moving around on the top plate that I could tell, but I bet that screw jumping around in there could have caused some misfires...

Have to wonder how that happen and how long it's been like that.

Also the top plate on my MSD distributor is pretty loose and that will cause the timing to move some - Which BTW it does... it backs up about 2* as RPM increases. Now I have to go back and tighten up the nuts that lock the advance mechanism up.
