How difficult is it to remove/swap a ZF6? Assuming you are not changing the clutch, bearing, etc Is it really just a matter of remove shifter, drop exhaust, remove C-beam, propshaft, remove wires/associated hardware and remove the transmission from the bell housing?
Am I oversimplifying this? I've only been under my '93 a few times but from the looks of things this is a pretty simple trans to swap out? Opinions please and tips/tricks before I dig in in a few weeks? Thanks, |

Drop exhaust, remove shifter knob, remove cbeam, unbolt trans and slide it out.
Pretty easy. Only issue is the thing weighs more than the engine... Never tried it without a lift though.. My new lift has a stupid plate (hydraulic/cable under) which makes using a trans jack a pain in the ass. But at least an SUV/truck can go all the way up without hitting hydraulic lines. -- Joe |

cool!
I will be using a lift with arms which swing in on each side and no floor plate so, complete access to the trans and room for transmission jack. Thanks for the good news! |

if you have a transmission jack, which you want a ZF is HEAVY, than the hardest part is getting off the stupid shift knob. The little wedge that hold the stock knob on is a royal PITA!
some beam plates make putting it back on a lot easier you need to hammer the C-beam back in order to get it off. |

yea... heavy... the damned thing must weigh 150 lbs.
and it's dead weight. However, with a lift and a good tranny jack, no probs! |

Put the ass end up on 6-ton stands, and you'll have enough room to wheel it out of there on a trans jack. I bought one from harbor freight for $80 or so.

On reinstall, get the cbeam loosely fitted before tightening any bolts down to the bellhousing.

btdt. When it finally came loose, I jammed my elbow pretty hard into the headliner.
And don't be an idiot like me and pound it back in tightly after you're done. Are you putting a Hurst shifter in while you're at it? |

Kevin - as a matter of fact I am. I figure it would be the perfect opportunity. BTW - what are your current thoughts on gearbox fluid? Regular GM, Penzoil Syncromesh, BMW, Amzoil? I hate to ask but, I'm going to need to decide what fluid to go with. No drag/autocross, just a cruiser. Thanks, |

I'd go with the pennzoil synchromesh, which my research says is a relabeled bottle of GM's fluid that siperceded the original spec'd fluid.
Keep in mind the thinner synchromesh will be noisier from the get-go, especially if you have a single mass flywheel. And regarding the castrol RS/TWS motor oil (assuming its even the same), the info I've found doesn't look reassuring. The castrol is thick and therefore quiet at first but thins out quickly anyways and I don't believe it is compatible with the synchro material. But you know what they say, opinions are like assholes. Rest assured neither I, nor GM, nor zfdoc, nor Zerdeifenazi Ferkensourkraut will be buying you a new trans if their fluid recommendation fails you. |

get the car off the ground a ways, no less than 12-15" from the ground to the bottom of the floor jack spot on he rail
It will make the job a lot easier... Oh, and put a TKO back in, in place of the ZF.. |

Got a link to your TKO thread? I can't recall if it has the same bolt pattern as the muncie/t10/sag or if it's specific? -- Joe |

Obviously, he needs all the 4+3 or TKO clutch, 4+3 BH and 4+3 slave etc.
The TKO is the same bolt pattern as the 4+3 http://www.corvette-guru.com/modules/ ... t_id=54143#forumpost54143 |
