My Grandmother on my Mom's side, Margret A. Rogers, 85, passed away this morning at 9:20 am.

I was lucky enough to hold her hand and look into her eyes while she took her last breath.

She's had a rough decade or so, but the last few months have been VERY bad with news of seven different stage IV cancers in her body.

The last eight days were the worst for her, and Sarah and I tried to make her journey as comfortable as possible. In the last few days her speech turned to gibberish and she lost 90% of her motor control. Essentially her body was disconnected from her mind and I know she probably felt incredibly alone and helpless.

I know she's better off now, as she believed in the after life, and is now with her passed loved ones that have gone before her.

I feel good about what happened this morning because she died in comfort, without pain, and for the last few moments while she slipped away from our world I saw peace in her eyes, and a waive of relaxation and comfort for her old and worn out body. For the first time in YEARS I saw her in no pain...seconds before her end. Yeah, I cried.

Images are from our wedding almost exactly a year ago, actual date was 06-06-09. My Birthday and wedding day, to Sarah, pictured in the white dress. The stunning silver haired fox was Margret, my Grandmother. Woman in blue is my Mother, and in black is my Step Father Robert.

Margret was a phenomenally smart, sharp, and funny woman who gave a lot to this world in personality and spirit. She was truly a heroic woman and she'll be missed unconditionally.

Thanks so much everyone. She was such a wonderful person. We've had to enlarge the memorial service plans, in our meeting this morning at the cemetery as it seems more than their expected capacity have indicated they want to come. Heck Sarah's whole family from Louisville is coming into town. LOL Grandma's memorial will have twice the attendance that our wedding had. As it should be.

Thanks again everyone.

I am so very sorry to hear this. Being at a loved one's side during their last moments brings great peace to that person. It's heartwrenching for you, but understand the gift you gave to her.
