Are you trying to spread the pipes apart a bit? Heating one of the curved bends? The Mapp should be enough to heat that area.
You'll be glad you bought it.

Just moving one pipe over about 1/4 - 1/2 inch, where the factory bend is. Mapp should be fine, I hope.

Suggestion: Cut a 2x4 to fit between the pipes 1/4,1/2 longer than than the current width. Put it between the pipes at an angle, heat the bend and tap the 2x4 with a hammer until you get the spread you want. Let the pipes cool with the 2x4 in place.

I agree good sugggestion... the Mapp gass should work fine.. I've had pipes glowing red hot before with it..

Thanks guys. It actually needed to move in, not out. But the more I looked at it, it really needed two or three little angles. I gave it a valiant effort tonight, but I concede defeat. Rick has offered to trailer it up to the exhaust shop which is what I will be doing.

Since the exhaust is dead, I installed the starter tonight and zip tied a few wires out of the way of the headers.

It's close.

Baby steps.....

I received the chip in the mail today from Mick. I had already ordered the Moates adapter. Toys!!!

Photobucket

I decided to pull the seat to work under the dash, makes it easier. The ECM is on the passenger side. Pull the lower knee panel and you'll see this:

Photobucket

See that white thing on the bottom? That's holding the ECM in with two 10 mm screws...shot from underneath:

Photobucket

Hmmm...mine's been replaced before:

Photobucket

Pull the dust cover off and remove the stock memcal and adapter, then you can put in the moates adapter and the new chip. The instructions on Moates site are much better than mine, found here:

http://support.moates.net/2008/10/31/g1/

That's it for today. Baby steps.

Matthew

(edited for clarity installing chip)

Got the timing properly set last night. I also set the base idle and TPS, but it's a little higher than I'd like so I need to tweak that. I think my fuel pump is on the way out. I heard it groaning last night like I've never heard before, and when I was revving it a little bit the pressure gauge needle was bouncing over. Plus, when I turn it off now the fuel pressure drops like a rock. I'm figuring that's the check valve. We'll have to see. I think I'll replace it as a preventative measure.

Atleast the pump is really easy to replace! Fuel pressure drop could be caused by the regulator too though. if you can pinch off the return line run the long enough pump to pressureize the system. and see if it still drops if it holds then you know it's the regulator if it doesn't then you know it's either leaking though the injectors or the pump..

Or if your worried about the pump just replace it and re check everything.. if the pump doesn't fix it then you can trouble shoot it..

Mick - I haven't driven it yet because I was having trouble with getting the datalogging stuff hooked up. Once that is sorted out I will.

Rick - I ordered a new racetronix/walbro pump this morning!

Not too much to report. I got my new racetronix / walbro fuel pump kit and got that installed the other night. Ran for about two minutes then died! Did some testing with the wires, relays, etc, found I was getting juice to the rear harness, but pump wasn't pumping. Upon pulling it out, the harness from the pump to the factory connection came loose somehow. I zip tied it together and it's a-ok.

Took the car for a test drive tonight and things still aren't right. I can feel it. Doesn't sound right either. My best guess is that the rocker arms need to be adjusted. Builder said they were already set, but I don't think so. I had a chevy blazer years ago that I did a head gasket on. Valves were overtightened and it ran the same way. So I'm going on that personal experience basis. Once I do that, I'll see how things go.

I also threw a MAT code today for the first time ever. It has to be from when I took the plenum off the other day, I think I twisted it. Hopefully I just need to pull it off and reconnect it since it's a PIA to get to.

Further updates to come.

Ok...updates...

I got the valves adjusted the other day. They were close but not perfect. It's a pretty involved process on this car since the valve covers take 45 minutes to take off! I'll do a tech post later on how to do that. I also got the new Taylor spiro pro wires installed. They seem like a nice quality piece. After that the car was running like a beast! I had a stock 195 thermostat in there and the car was running around 210 with it. So I put in a 180 (tested first) and then it was running around 195...go figure. I also tightened up the collector bolts because I could hear a bit of an exhaust leak there. Seems to have worked. If not, I bought a set of Mr. Gasket collector gaskets which are better than the ones in there now. I'm kicking around changing the IAC, it is a bit tempermental. Was giving me issues last year, but I cleaned it and left it at that. Guess it's time to just do it.

As far as first impressions...holy crap. It's great. 0-60 is like nothing. Still not fast enough....lol. But the trans shifts fast and smooth. The shift kit is awesome. It doesn't jerk, just catches, so that's perfect for the street. Stall is a little different than I'm used to, but that will just take some adjusting to get used to. It's not bad, just different.

I'll get a video later.

Give it some time. It will get faster as the motor breaks in, and the fine tuning is done. They a whole different animal with good traction, and a solid launch.

Hello Matthew,
My name is Joe and I'm new to the forum. I've been a member on the Corvette forum for about 6 months and been rebuilding my 1990 C4. It's been a blast and I'll post some pics for you to see. I like this thread a lot and was wondering if you still have the pics available? I'm about to install my L98 after rebuilding the top end with many mods, but I have to admit I'm kinda lost! LOL.
I thought I took enough pics and labeled plenty of bags of bolts but for some reason I feel like I don't know where anything goes! I know I'll get through it but your info is real helpful and I know your pics would be as well. Thanks in advance!!

Welcome to the forum, Joe!

Unfortunately after Photobucket killed the internet I haven't found a good alternative photo hosting site. I do still have all of my photos on my desktop so they are available. Ill try to figure something out.

Aside from the hosting problems, please feel free to post up any questions. I'll do my best to answer them and if I have a photo handy in reference to the install I'll post it up.

Welcome Joe!!!!

Good luck on the install. I am sure you will figure out the parts, but you can post small pics on the site directly.

They just need to be under 1mb.

Ask questions!!! We are here to help!

Hello again gentleman!
Sorry for the late reply but I didn't get notification of your messages. I finally dropped the motor in the car, got the motor mount bolts in and am struggling to get all the bell housing bots on! A couple of them are difficult to get to but I'll figure it out.
I know photobucket is a real pain Matthew! I've had my troubles with it in the past as well. I guess any pics of the bracket assemblies and wiring to the motor would be helpful. As you can see from my pics I've installed the Mini Ram system, so I've got to apply a few minor mods to make it work. Appreciate the warm welcome!!
Joe

nice!!!

Is this an auto or manual?

What exhaust are going with? Being in FL, the cats can go, so long tubes and an xpipe and duals will rock and add 40+ hp.

Keep us posted!!!! bet it will really rock when done!!

Thanks man! Its automatic w/ a TCI stall converter and has been a fun project. I have hooker headers that I'm installing and definitely agree with the xpipe! Gonna have to leave that to the exhaust shop, I removed the whole exhaust system but do't know how to weld! lol! Here are some of the other mods plus I've also ported the heads myself.

-Competition Cam Kit #K08-467-8
-XFI280XFI HR13 Hydraulic Roller Camshaft (Lift: .576"/.570" With 1.6 Rockers)
-Comp Cam lifter kit and pushrods
-Hooker Long tube headers
-K&N Filter
-Chrome valve covers
-NGK G Power Platinum spark plugs w/ Accel wires
- TCI Torque converter 242800

The bell housing bolts are difficult. The top ones are best accessed using several feet of extensions and a swivel socket on the end. Try a variety of extensions/lengths to see what works. Already having the exhaust off is a big help.

As far as the headers, are they painted or coated? I can't tell from the pictures.

The miniram is a great intake. You should have no complaints.

Don't forget you'll need a computer tune, as well.

Looks like you're making great progress!

Joe, when you put the headers on you will find it's easier to put one side through the top and one side through the bottom. You'll see what I mean.

Thanks for the advice! Looking at the pics I posted at what point do you think I should install the headers? I'm trying to get a grasp on what to do next; wiper motor, starter, alternator, brackets, power steering pump distributor, wiring???? I'm probably overthinking it but wasn't sure if there was a certain order! lol, thanks!!

Distributor can go in last. I put the starter on after the headers because then you have more room to slip them in. 88 should have the mini starter so you can slip that through once the headers are on. There are brackets for the AC compressor and alternator that attach to the original exhaust manifold bolts so you can't reattach those until the headers are on.
