I just had a Clarion head plus fronts and rear speakers installed for $475. We reused the old aftermarket amp. I'm not an audiophile so it's all stuff off the shelf. It sounds decent. Better than listening to just the front right speaker. I have the same basic system in my 90,79 and the box truck. Cruising season is upon us in SoFlo. They put speakers in the original speaker locations and modified as needed.

Ok... details...

I had to replace some stuff... the awesome Alpine 7998 head unit I had was aging out. The vacuum florencent display was dead... and there is not much hope of fixing it. So I sold it on ebay. The unit worked, but there was no chance of seeing what station you were one, or, how to make any of the delicate setting adjustments...

A few months back, a friend gave me a couple of JL Audio 8W7 subs. These are intense little bastards... weigh like 15 lbs each. But I didn't have enough amp...

until about 2 weeks ago the JL Audio 500/5 blew... the right front channel made this demonic screech and died.

It all goes away...

In the dash has gone a Kenwood execelon 797. Front, rear and sub RCA outs, 4v. HD radio, Bluetooth, CD player, Sat Ready. Very nice and only $175 as on open box from Crutchfield.

The front stage (Canton RS3 3-way separates) will be powered by a Focal FPP-2100... 80 watts per channel, 2 channels.

To feed the subs, Pioneer GM-D8601 800 watt 1 ohm stable, mono amp. That should be ok.

Install is today. I will update.

have the car nearly gutted... I installed the new front stage amp to test speakers... I need to work over the right fronts. I am not getting much sound, but I may have damaged the wiring removing the old head unit.

However, the left front sounds awesome!

Update:

I got the front stage fully working yesterday. I had a bad solder joint on the right door mid, so I fixed that.

The right side had also been an experiment in bi-amplification - the old 500/5 had 5 channels, 2x100, 2x25 and 1x250. A nice selection for a three-way front speaker setup and a single sub.

So I ran the front stage with the 2x100 for the mid and the mid-bass and the tweet was on the 25 watt rear channel, using a 24db slope to take some of the edge off, along with hpf and a high filter cut off. I should have put a choke on it to limit the range at about 4000hz, but I didn't. I also tuned it with the gain controls and the fader.

When the amp died a couple weeks back, it let off this scream... that scream took out the tweeter.

In phonics, or language, there is a term used to define words that start with the letter "S" or sound like the do. That word is "Sibilance".

It is also used to define how a tweeter should sound. If a tweeter reproduces the "S" sound without any distortion or harshness, that's good.

Right now, my poor little speaker sounds like the "S" is causing something the flap in the breeze. It's fluttering, and that is creating a coarseness in the sound quality.

If you have heard "S" sounds that are harsh or shrill coming from an audio system, it is one of 2 things, a bad source signal - super cheap shit audio will do this.

Very poor tuning (think concerts). Or a bad speaker.

In this case, the channel in the amp blew, took out the tweeter and that is about that.

As an aside, the Focal FPP-2100 sounds FABULOUS. I would highly recommend that amp. Clear (bad tweet notwithstanding) and excellent noise floor - very quiet amp. I am impressed.

A quick update...

This is more about the front speakers... I had forgotten how musical the old school Canton's are.

these are OLD now... 1998 vintage, but still going strong - bad tweet doesn't count!

They have such amazing off axis performance, and for a set of speakers to have such broad unidirectional sound is exceptional.

The specs:

3-way with passive crossover
6" mid-bass
4" mid-range
1" tweeter

All are mounted in the doors.

The model number is Canton Pullman RS3... good luck finding a pair... I have been poking about eBay and they are rarer than rare.

I need to finish the dash portion of the install. I am aiming for this weekend.

I had to get a new soldering iron, my old one was, well, old... and I had burned through the wire one too many times. It kinda bit me last time.

the garage is a mess, and that is Job 1 tomorrow.

I got into a mess during the holidays; then a skunk moved in and I had to kick is stinky ass out... but he was very cute and fuzzy.

Clean garage, start on audio!

the real cool part are the aluminum bezels around the tweets!

Tell Virgil thanks... and I will make this right at Port's O Call... if T ever gets a weekend off!

The holes were the result of an idea gone wrong... damnit

The tweets are actually Alpine R series. the original Canton in the right door died a miserable death when the amp went up a few months back. The shriek was most painful. The Alpines are a silk dome piece and are very nicely matched to the Canton xovers. Rather impressed.

Update time:

Got the car emptied out, no passenger seat...

Did get 99% of the passengers door done. Need to wrap that up (gotta find some stupid piece of plastic trim).

Also, cut all the MDF for the new sub box. Will start screwing that together this week sometime.

I will then need to bolt it to the floor, carpet it up and mount the amps.

Finally, doing the drivers side door and finishing the dash install.

I made the new box yesterday... I also found some errors in my cuts. I was trying to reuse some old MDF, but that wasn't a good idea. Entirely compromised the box size.

With that said, 2 8" JL Audio W7 subs hit like a mofo... DAMN. For something so small, those little buggers pack a punch... and a half.

This week, I will get new MDF and rebuild. And remeasure...
