You won't believe me when I tell ya...

Driving down the 110 freeway on my home from work, cruising at a nice 75 mph... I hear a THUD... then I smell nasty burning shit... then I see sparks... Then I merge to the center median pull off... All of that happened in about 10 seconds.

I get out... check the right rear tire... nope, not flat.

I double check the left rear tire... nope, not flat...

I peak under the rear suspension only to find that the rear transverse leaf spring has BROKEN. Sheared right clean off at the end... 3" to 5" not there no mo...

Fun, eh?

Finally got home about 8:45... lost three hours to this shit... damnit... not how I had planned on spending a quite Tuesday nite at home.

sigh...

That sucks Andy.

But at least the broken spring didn't put you into the concrete highway divider.

And if it didn't crack the fender, you're probably lucky.

Repair & drive.

Back in the 70's when I had my 64 coupe, I was driving down the road and the same thing happened to me. Only difference is that the spring didn't break, but the head of the bolt that holds the spring had worn clear through the washer and pulled through and released that end of the spring. I had the same reaction as you did. It was not fun trying to fix that on the side of the road in the dark.

Look at the bright side, it could have been worse Andy.

No, hit nothing... and remarkably, never lost control. It just dropped.

I called Vette2Vette and he doesn't think he has any springs! Most are going as complete rear suspension sets.

I have thought of coil overs, but I don't think I can afford them at this time...

And yes, they are composite.

the funny thing? The bolt is still there... so is the nut, just no bushing and no spring perch...

I still have my base springs

you have an aftermarket exhaust

I've heard those can weaken and make the springs fail

One night years ago I was following an early C3 in my pickup and we went over some rough railroad tracks and something let go in his rear suspension and it seems to me it was the rear transverse spring and the end hit the pavement and the sparks that flew were like a 4th of July rocket taking off. I stopped to help but the right side of that spring was on the ground.....he got it off the road and I took him to a truck stop so he could call a wrecker...

You may be famous Andy....Wikipedia says no composite Corvette leaf spring has ever failed.....

Corsa... and think about it... the FAR OUTSIDE end failed, not the middle. If it had failed at the middle, sure, but 2' away? that theory is baseless, if you want my opinion.

Are you interested in selling the rear spring? I have the brackets I think... waiting on confirmation.

But tonight, I want to take 5 and check the batwing. If the standoffs for the brackets are screwed, so am I.

I was thinking the same thing... This gave way at the very end... not the middle... this is where stress is at its highest.

I swear... I wish I could swing coil overs... that would solve sooo many ills right now.

I think I know what failed...

I had the poly spring bushings from Ecklers on there... the rubber ones were pretty ugly.

I think that the poly broke up under tension, leading to the only thing holding the spring on being a thin washer... over time, the washer caved and the spring sprung. It is the only thing that makes any sense.

Andy-

Did you get a chance to call Mark Savitske? If we're close enough with that "other idea" I mentioned last night, $200-$450 for a new or used leaf might end up wasted if it's just a short term fix. I'm not in a huge hurry to get my ride back - I do want it back though, with leaf springs intact ;)

Methinks the biggest issue is whether the shock bodies are close enough in dimensions and mount style. The springs are cheap enough to replace if spring-rates aren't correct. Most of the cost is in the shocks (which are double-adjustable anyway) and the machined parts.

I guess no one has read my theory...

I don't think the spring failed, I think the bushing did. It's the only thing that makes sense... the bushing lets go, he weight is no on the washer, the washer is thin and can't take it, it gets crushed, spring comes crashing down.

I am reaching out to Ecklers to alert them of this situation.

Yea... just forgot to update here... thanks for moving them over, tho.

the first pic is of the brackets that hold the spring. As you can see, the brace has been sheared!

pic 2 is of the spring, or what's left...

And pic 3 is of my suspension complete and pre-banski.

The lower bushing on the spring is what failed. the numbers are way too small.

I got a deal on a spring and bolt package. Whew... Ordered up Energy Suspension bushings... in for under $200 total!!!

Exciting.

Parts should be waiting for me when get back from FL next week.

I also bumped the battery and started it up, moving it into a place where I can take the thing apart... finally. Reassembly won't take more than 90 minutes or so.

I doubt it... I think the shudder is aging in the diff. I talked to a friend who does diff rebuilds, and he said as the gears age, they, essentially, get used to going in one direction, top that off with clutch wear and bearing wear, a shudder isn't impossible.

I will inspect the rear end thoroughly when I get the thing apart.

I took the nut off the left side, but the spring is so wedged in there, I am concerned about it unloading... I am kinda hoping that with the nut off, it will come undone on its own. no harm done... at least not to me!

I won't be able to work on it for a week or so.

yea, that's gonna be my plan. I will have to get the back end up, which is real easy with my floor jack and go from there.

I hope this doesn't hurt the shocks any... I know they come compressed, so this shouldn't be bad.

Update...

Plan B worked...

I had to move the Vette into the garage... so the broken part is still on the ground... The pavement was enough to unload the bolt and the spring fell off!

Done!
