We're bringing our currently austere attached two-car garage (the one we built a couple of years ago) up to a slightly better standard than our current detached garage over the next few months. This involves insulation, OSB walls, hot and cold running water, a sink, LED shop lights, and a door into the house. An open question is whether it's worth the trouble and expense of putting in heat or heat and air conditioning. What does Guru think? Are there any portable space heaters you like? |

If you insulate, a good kerosine heater will make a garage warm as a sauna. For not much money.
One of my faves is the heater that burns waste oil. Heatpumps are ok, but burn a lot of electricity... and only work to about 35F. With a garage, open the big door, open the back, and/or add a ceiling fan, and it's going to be ok. I don't see the need for AC. If you want AC, those wall mounted systems are a perfect solution. Won't suck up a window! The compressor fits outside, and this wall hanger has the fans and ducting. Easily handle a 2 car garage. Regardless, you will want a vent fan... The fumes can build up when using cleaners and such. |

Not sure, but I think it's pretty humid in PA, right? If that is the case, I think central heat and A/C would be a good choice. My shop (wood shop) gets real hot during the summer, even with walk-in and overhead doors open....and we are in a low humidity area. I finally added a window A/C unit. My shop is 24 x 30 and the 18,000 btu A/C does a reasonable job of taking the bite off. It won't take it down to 60 degrees, but will do upper 70s and that makes it bearable.
I'm also not too big on anything with an open flame with the possibilities of gasoline fumes. Particularly if those flames are close to the floor. Gas fumes are heavier than air and will accumulate on the low areas. Open flame down there and the garage becomes a bomb. In my shop I have an electric furnace that sits in the attic area. No open flame and 10' high. |

I have a ceiling gas heater. Makes a huge difference. No AC, but that would be nice if I had the chance.
