I'll be driving from Myrtle Beach, SC to DC this weekend. I want to stop somewhere in NC.

Is there anything I shouldn't miss, or anything I should specifically avoid?

I'll be leaving Saturday late morning, thinking of crashing in NC, then onto DC Sunday morning.

TIA-
NelsonV

Well... from a pure geographic stand point, Myrtle Beach to DC is best done by taking the old 501 from MB to 95, then 95 to DC.

As far as sights? The only one I can think of is South of the Border!

Another option is taking old US17 up the coast to VaB and over to DC from there. Nice sights. Kitty Hawk is along that route.

Charlotte and Raleigh are rather far west.

If you do the 95 option, it's an easy 6 hour drive, IIRC. If you do want to stop, there are any number of good interchanges... Rocky Mount and Roanoke Rapids NC, or Emporia VA.

If you haven't noticed, I-95 is one long tourist trap. There are hotels, gas stations and fast food emporiums all along that stupid chunk of asphalt. Rocky Mount, I finally figured out, is about an 8-10 hour drive from the NY metro area... duh. 2500 rooms+... Roanoke Rapids is a little less nuts, and there is a newish Holiday Inn express about 2-3 miles south of the main interchanges. Emporia is about the same as RR, but about 20 miles north.

From Emporia to DC is about 3 hours, I would guess.

Oh, depending on time of day, it can be much faster going around Richmond - use 295 - vs going thru it.

Rush hour used to be 7-9am and 5-7pm... don't know the trend anymore.

But if the traffic is light, it's about 30 minutes faster going thru.

Richmond has some great places to eat... there is an area off 95 called Shockoe Slip/Shockoe Bottom. Right along the James River.

Another old fave was Penny Lane, a British pub. The owner used to be a chef on the Queen Elizabeth II.

About a mile west of 95, using the Broad St exit. You will pass where I used to work, VDOT, the short building in the middle... Central Office.

Thanks Andy!

I'm gonna use Google maps to find the fastest route DC >> Myrtle Beach for Friday morning.

I want to take a different route for the return Sat/Sun. Leisure trip so not necessary to bee-line going back.

I found out this is going on in Charlotte this weekend, so the die may* be cast:

*Caitlin might have an appointment(s) to view property this weekend, in which case this road trip may get postponed for a diff weekend.

This time of year, SC is lovely. The weather is nearly perfect. You can also visit the NASCAR museum in Charlotte... I think it's near CMS.

Oh, a warning... SC Highway Patrol loves to run massive speed traps on 95. They even run big ones, followed by smaller ones to snag those using radar detectors.

Keep your speed to within 5mph of the speed limit, or, within the speed of the traffic, you will be fine.
