So, the "new" attached garage is starting to get fairly nice. After the folks who only build garages built it for us in 2014, it was rather austere, with that 26 x 24 space looking wide open.

Our GC worked on it earlier this year. It now has insulation, OSB interior walls, bright LED garage lights, an exhaust fan, a deep sink with hot and cold running water, and steps and an interior door into the house. Within the next few days, it will have an HVAC register that should extend its usable season.

Aside from the two tool boxes, it is "green fields" right now. My question to the Gurus is this: how did you decide on the layout for your garage? Did it happen over time or did you have a plan? Did you look at any books or web-sites?

Great website John. I'm on there.

Most of my garage layout was trial and error. Not ideal, but works for me.

I was my garage was that big John. I was stuck with where my tool boxes could go and other storage as well. My "shop", on the other hand, was carefully planned. 24 x 31 and I knew where I wanted things...even things I didn't have at the time of building my shop. I did/do have the advantage, at the time to be able to do scaled drawings and made little scaled cutouts of all the machines, cabinetry and boxes that I wanted, then moved them around to see how they fit the best and most convenient.

How tall are you ceilings? Are you putting in a lift? (highly recommended). I could do some scaled drawings for you if you'd like. Let me know and I will get with you on the details.

Thanks, Tom. We could put a lift in this garage, but we've already got two four-posters in the detatched garage, so that's definitely not a near term thing.
