I am starting this weekend with the head unit. I swung for the fences and picked up a Kenwood Excelon 9903S double din, Android Auto, DVD receiver. Sweet.

As I progress, I will document here, then sort it out as a C6 Audio FAQ.

came with a backup camera!

Android Auto allows for a compatible Android device to mirror on the head unit - maps, texts, internet... Who needs GPS?

Much like "Car Play" for Apple devices. I love my Car Play in the pickup.

The best laid plans....

I got it all hooked up... only to find the interface was dead!!! It would power up, but not make sound. After testing, determined that the interface was DOA... waiting on a new one.

I assume you are up and running.. I decided to ditch my cheap Chinese HU..

I almost bought a 9904s, but came across a deal on an Alpine INE-W960.. granted no Android Auto or Car Play, but does BT streaming and has Navigation, etc..

Yes, it is up and running. After two separate CRUX interfaces... they do not work on C6 Corvettes, no matter the audio system.

Crutchfield sent me the PAC GM interface and it works perfectly! Sounds pretty good, considering it's hooked to junk GM amps and speakers...

The factory system has horrible crossover points. Each frequency group is its own island of weirdness. They are there, but the slope is yuck at best.

I am now working on the sub box. I have a pair of JL Audio 8W7's. OMG are they nice... but the little shits ain't little. The minimum sized box is 10" square by 9" deep, external dimension. This is very problematic in the C6 hatch... there ain't no space for the top to fit. The C6 hatch is much shallower than the C4 - 4" or so, at least. Consider they need .85 cf boxes, each, space is a problem.

I am leaning, heavily, towards either a pair of these:

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_13610TW3 ... io-10TW3-D4.html?tp=68872

or a single 12" version. I am thinking that 2 10" would compensate for the performance issues of a shallow sub. At the same time, the reviews are real good for these. and the box, for the 10", is only .519 for each... and is only 5" high... sooo....

I have a Pioneer 800w mono amp to push them too. No problem there.

Not sure what I want in the front. I have a Focal 2 channel that is really nice. But I don't know if I want to go 4 channel or what. I want to replace the rear speakers - they are in the halo - and perhaps drive them with the rear channel of the head unit. They don't need to be loud, just to help raise the soundstage. I have a pair of MATCH 4" coax drivers.

As for the front, MATCH makes an three-way separate, with an 8" mid-bass, designed for BMW fit... but they should fit the doors of a C6.

Thoughts?

Matt is so bad ...

... we've never upgraded any of our Corvette stereos, even though I'm an audio snob at home. Of course, with the 1985, I rarely use the stereo—I want to hear if any parts are falling off the car.

Andy, I'm interested in where you end up, along with pictures when you get a chance.

Honest, if not snarky question...

When I was a kid, 10-11 or so, I started to notice that I could hear things... not bad things, mind you, but things... I could hear voices from distances... When I went into the TV Stereo dept at the local dept store, I would hear this deafening screech, or squeal... take your pick.

Over time, I found out that when I started test listening audio systems, I learned that some systems would, when I listened long enough, would give me a headache.

I asked my Dr and he said that the only thing odd about my ears was that my ear canal goes up at a 40* angle, vs. a nominal 10* angle that most people have.

Whether the added angle is a cause, I don't know, but I can tell when things are out of whack of not. A couple of local bands back in Delaware would ask me how things sounded, same with a couple of sound guys... it was quite the honour to be the one these guys would always ask for validity.

With that, the SQ of most factory systems is so weak that I must do something. They are now tuned so bass heavy, cause that's what the kinds want, and most people think that full bass is some kind of indication of sound quality. Too much and it sounds muddy. Too little, the music sounds fragile. Mids too high, it sounds like an AM radio... balance... that's the trick.

And I can tune a system by ear. Most can't. I will never forget... about 15 years ago, a buddy of mine had some of my old audio equipment and some newer stuff. After building a box for the 10" sub, he hooked up my old Rockford Fosgate 500m amp to an Alpine head, with an Alpine 4 channel amp. After all the stuff was installed, I sat down and started the tune... I worked the head unit, and had him tweak the amps, as needed.

As I sat there, I could hear the sub bass move from the rear (Ford Explorer Sport) storage area to the front and to a place where it felt like the sub was situated at shoulder level, between the seats. It freaked him out... but the results were the results.

I am a big fan of SQ.

My comment was toward the subwoofers in the trunk. I don't see the point of an adult putting a subwoofer in the trunk of a Corvette. Just personal preference.

Sound spans a range. Without subbass, the sound is hollow. Subbass can sound excellent when done right.

I agree with Bogus.. I have some small 6.5" woofers in the back of my vette, in the stock locations.. they are needed..

I have a 3 way up front and it helps.. I am finally getting an actual SQ unit in the dash and hope to be happy with the sound. my 89 sounded incredible with the same 3 way, 8" woofers and difference amps with my NAK headunit, but I like the idea of a back up camera and nav.. so I am finally going to get almost all I want..

Andy, we need pictures ;) did you sell your vette with the 3-way system in it?

Jeff -

Yes, the 92 is gone. But the memory remains... I will post pics of that install.

So far, I have been selecting hardware.

I am going with the JL Audio 13" slim line sub... it fits the need nicely and fits the hatch even better.

Most likely, I am going to upgrade the front stage amp with a Butler Audio Tube Driver. The next gen is coming out by years end. www.butleraudio.com for current hardware specs.

yes, the three ways are gone, but they were also 20 years old... Canton Pullman RS3, haven't been sold since 1998!!! The tweets died a long time ago. I replaced them with some Alpine units. Worked nicely.

I am in a debate... I am looking at Focal and Morel. 2 or 3 way.

I am also leaning towards a hybrid... 4" 2 way coax with an 8" midbass... the door can take it. thoughts?

Bogus,

Thoughts on the 9903s? I need to swap out my Alpine, the screen totally gets washed out in sunlight. I understand that the screen is the biggest challenge.

I am wanting Car play now too.. looking at the 9704s

The 9903 is very nice... The screen tilts, but it still subject to sun wash out. sucks, really...

Car Play, can't speak for it, but Android Auto is almost useful. The controls on the phone get locked and doing things that aren't part of AA becomes really hard.
