Continued from yesterday.

I have a whopping 3 college credits from a welding course I took when I was stationed in Germany. Yep, it was a class offered by a university. Instead I continued my education in a carpenters apprenticeship program that I never finished due to a near death illness that almost took Sonny-boy when he was 18 months old. My early life was pretty much one tragedy after another which aided in my choice of alcohol and drug therapies. I was always hard working so I fell into the class of functioning alcoholic. Do I want any sympathy? Fuck, no. I never lived up to my fullest possible potential nor will I ever. I've always had a job, a roof over my head, food on the table, and family medical insurance. Family medical insurance saved me from financial ruin on multiple occasions. Together, Sue and I are doing pretty damned good. Money in the bank, cars, properties all amassed through hard work and diligent saving. I guess you could say I graduated from the school of hard knocks. Learned everything the hard way.

SELF APPLAUSE!

Morning guys...The sun is up and bright, but chilly, 28 now and supposedly headed to low 50s.

Graduated from HS and decided that I wanted to do something in the medical field, so went to college. Science classes were a breeze, but Math was my nemesis. I just didn't understand Trig, all that BS made no sense to me. After I got my AA degree I quit school, "I'm done with this crap". So I went to work in the oilfields, well for a company that worked in the fields. I was the truck maintenance guy, dispatcher and managed the retail gas station for the company owners. Rosie finished her RN degree and we were doing very well, everything was paid for and we were rolling right along....then I decided I really needed to finish school.

My best friend, stopped by on his way back to school. As we talked he said, "I can't believe I'll be graduating this semester". When he said that, it was like a 2 x 4 hitting me up side my head....I could be finishing too, if I had only continued. So I told Rosie, I've got to finish my education. That didn't go over well with her...she likes security and no change. But I insisted. "What are you going to do?", she asks, knowing I wouldn't continue with the Medical thing. "I think I want to teach." Both my parents were teachers. And I always found myself teaching things to the kids of my boss at the station.

The next semester I was enrolled at Fort Hays State University taking an Art class, a history class and an Industrial arts class, not sure which way I wanted to go. It quickly became apparent to me I couldn't be an Art teacher.....I just ain't WEIRD enough to be an Art teacher. History...I love, but it just wasn't me. Industrial arts was my perfect fit. I could work with my hands and build things. I loved my shop classes in HS, but that was a time when "shop classes" were for the 'dummies' and anyone with any smarts went to college. I found out there's a lot more to it than that.

Received by BS (that's Bachelor of Science ) degree in '79 and took my first job teaching. The school offered to pay for continuing ed classes, so Immediately started my Masters program to summer of 80 and received my Masters in Industrial Education in 82, again from Fort Hays State University.

I may have more formal education than others here, but. like Tommy, that school of hard knocks is hard to beat, and worth as much as my formal education...maybe more.

OK sorry for the long post. I hope all of you have a great day.

Everybody here has done pretty darn good for themselves. I look up to y'all. I just want to offer a ray of hope for the younger guys (like Matt). We didn't start really getting it together till we were in our 40's. We started retirement savings in earnest and debt reduction became paramount. At 53, (Sue, 47) we were totally debt free and have remained that way ever since except for a couple of years after we moved to the current house. We had an equity loan. Once again we ride the crest of the wave in financial freedom. Now, with disposable income, we disperse it cruising and gambling and buying what we want when we need it. Except for auctions. That's really not stuff we need. And dinners out, don't need them either. There are even $$$ slated for charitable giving. Of course I had to forego my dream of total retirement as well. That, I'm afraid is what total retirement will always be in our household, a dream. (Supposedly those that remain engaged live longer, happier, healthier lives) and if you have a dog, even longer. I imagine that works if you have pigs, cats, birds, tortoises and fish I'll probably live to be 100. Isn't that a great thought, Matt?

SINCE WE’RE BEING ALL BIOGRAPHICAL, I’LL CHIP IN. MY DAD WAS FIRST GENERATION OFF THE FARM AND WORKED AS A HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION SUPERINTENDENT. I WORKED ON THE ROAD ALL THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL. WHEN YOUR DAD’S THE BOSS YOU EITHER HAVE IT EASY OR GET THE SCUTT JOBS. MINE DIDN’T BELIEVE IN NEPOTISM :-) I WAS EXPECTED TO GO TO COLLEGE BUT IT WAS NO BIG DEAL UNTIL---

IT’S A LITTLE KNOWN FACT THAT THE ROAD TO DAMASCUS PASSES THROUGH PAYOLA OKLAHOMA. ON A JULY DAY IN THE OKLAHOMA SUNSHINE I WAS STANDING IN A HOLE IN THE HIGHWAY BETWEEN PAUL’S VALLEY AND PAYOLA BREAKING CONCRETE WITH A SLEDGE HAMMER. THE GUY IN THE HOLE WITH ME WAS A COUPLE OF YEARS OLDER, ALREADY MARRIED, AND HAD KIDS. I WAS SMITTEN WITH THE VISION: HE WILL NEVER GET OUT OF THIS HOLE. I DECIDED I WOULD. COLLEGE BECAME IMPORTANT.

I DIDN’T HAVE AS MUCH FUN IN SCHOOL AS MARCUS DUE TO FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS. WORKED FACTORY JOBS IN THE SUMMER AND GOT $50 A MONTH AS A COMBINATION BOUNCER/PIANO POLISHER AT THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT, WHERE I SPECIALIZED IN SOPRANOS ;-) ALSO GOT SOME MONEY FROM ROTC MY JUNIOR AND SENIOR YEAR. MY BEST DOMICILE WAS A CONVERTED CHICKEN HOUSE JUST NORTH OF CAMPUS. LOCATION IS EVERYTHING. TEE, ONE OF MY HIGHLIGHTS WAS MAKING AN A IN TRIG AND AN F IN ALGEBRA THE SAME SEMESTER. HAD JUST ENOUGH MONEY FOR WHISKEY AND GASOLINE IF I DIDN’T EAT TOO MUCH. HAD FUN THOUGH.

GRADUATED I JANUARY 66 WITH A BS IN PSYCH AND A COMMISSION. THERE WAS FULL EMPLOYMENT THAT YEAR AND BY NOVEMBER I WAS TOURING VIET NAM WITH THE BEST CAVALRY PLATOON SINCE BEDFORD FORREST’S ESCORT COMPANY. I HAD ALSO ACQUIRED A NEW CAR AND A NEW WIFE. 1966 WAS A GREAT YEAR. IN 1967 I GOT BLOWN UP. LIFE HAS ITS UPS AND DOWNS.

GOT OUT OF THE ARMY IN 1976, WENT BACK TO SCHOOL, GOT MY MASTER’S TICKET PUNCHED, WENT TO WORK FOR THE VA AND LIVED HAPPILY EVER WHEN I RETIRED. TOMMY, I DID LIKE YOU AND PAID MY HOUSE OFF AT THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY. HUGE INCREASE IN DISPOSABLE INCOME. BABY DAUGHTER WENT TO PHARMACY SCHOOL TO HELP ME DISPOSE OF IT. MY ADVISE TO THE YOUNG IS AVOID DEBT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN AND GET OUT OF IT AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.

I agree, get out of debt ASAP. There were times when we struggled making ends meet. Wondering whether or not we could make the end of the month. Shortly after retiring, but was double dipping, we were able to pay off all our debt as well. We still help out our kids, not so much because we have to, but, because we are able to. Rosie's mom and dad, even though they didn't have a lot, helped us a couple times when things were really tough. We remembered that and do what we can when we can.

Went to watch GS #3 play ball. Walked down to the school, it was still light out, temps were not too bad. Game over, it's dark and the temps dropped by a lot. It was a brisk walk home.

Tommy, that what I wa going to tell you!
