[2003 LS1/A4 convertible, 52,000 miles, quite stock]

What tools do you prefer for removing/replacing spark plugs? I've been using a 5/8 spark plug socket plus four inch extension plus flex head ratchet and it hasn't been very effective. I'll freely grant that I'm not the most skilled wrencher (I managed to cut/abrade my hand with gloves on), so I'm looking for some suggestions on how to do this better.

That is basically the same set up I use......maybe a fixed head ratchet on some of the plugs will work better..... time and patience......each one is a victory.....

Thanks, Marcus—I am surprised it is so hard …

Personally, I only have one ratchet and one socket to do spark plugs

John, honestly I have all different types of ratchets, sockets, etc. My go to for most side-mounted plugs is a flex head ratchet and a swivel spark plug socket. For cars with limited access and/or headers, try a header spark plug socket with a flex head ratcheting wrench.

Hope that helps.

John, this is a header socket:

Much shorter with a hollow center so it slips over the plug. Then turn it with an open end/box end/ratcheting wrench.

Before I knew they existed I made my own out of a regular spark plug socket that I cut down and drilled out. Easy to do.
