Prepping Lauren for regional NCRS judging really began on Saturday, August 4th when I got her through state inspection—I don't have a trailer, so I need to be legal to drive the 225 or so miles.

Yesterday (August 5th), I staged the car in the garage on top of the canvas cloth/plastic sheet combination that Guru suggested. I angled the steering wheel hard to the left in preparation for replacing the battery.

Today (August 6th), I swapped the battery from last year's emergency replacement Die Hard to the correct service replacement AC Delco. The swap went fine, with two small problems:

1) The bolt in the blade battery disconnect switch isn't quite long enough for the inside of the AC Delco battery terminal. I'll have to get a slightly longer bolt.

2) One of the body clips behind the driver's side fender panel has disappeared (the bottom of the fender panel is a little sketchy—the panel will eventually need to be replaced), so I'll have to get a replacement.

46 days to go.

Yesterday (August 11th): I hurt my back (it's a very poor design) so I didn't get much work done on the car. I did, however, secure some u nuts at Lowes (no joy on a longer bolt for battery disconnect). I also gave in and ordered a pitch gauge and a nut and bolt gauge so I can stop guessing at part sizes (should have done that years ago).

Today (August 12th): my back feels a little better, so I successfully got the driver's side fender panel reinstalled with no extra parts . I told Ivelis how the missing piece on the panel makes the task a little challenging. She looked at me—"You should get that fixed." she said, referencing our local Corvette restoration shop.

August 13th: I spent about an hour cleaning the engine compartment. It doesn't look bad on the surface, but I remember the mechanical judge wasn't impressed last October. I hand wash parts with a lot of water, along with some Simple Green and some Griot's Garage Oil and Grease cleaner. It does look better.

I'm remembered today that I need to get the cigarette lighter working—the single most annoying thing about this car.

August 16th: while dithering with the !@#$% cigarette lighter I manage to blow the CTSY/CLCK 15-amp fuse. Turns out I have no 15-amp fuses left. Off to AutoZone—I end up buying another assortment of fuses (I've gone through almost all of what I bought back in the 1990s).

At least I diagnosed the problem correctly—the inside lights are working again. I'm not going to mess with the lighter any more this evening.

August 24: had very little success finding parts st Corvettes at Carlisle, though I did (astoundingly) find three new dealers who specialize in C4 Corvette parts. I did pick up two NCRS stickers (worth 3 judging points) and confirmed that nobody has bags that resemble the original literature bags.

Information is sketchy:

Literature bag—about letter size (8 1/2 x 11 inches), clear plastic, no markings, likely no re-usable closure

Locking lug nuts bag—blue plastic bag (don't know what the "blue" means), marked with part number 10034341 (that part number extended well into the C5 with, of course, different bags), likely no re-usable closure

Tire jack bag—24 x 8 inches, translucent thick (6 mils, 8 mils, ?) plastic bag, no closure whatsoever (just a bag), I have what I believe is the original, but it's really beat up

Yes, I'm crazy.

August 31st: I pulled the trigger on the locking lug nuts on eBay. Even if it's not absolutely correct, it's a heck of a lot closer and more complete than what I had. That should arrive late next week. I also ordered a replacement courtesy light for the burnt out one on the passenger's side and the little rubber bumpers that go near the rear hatch area.

As far as the clear plastic bags, could you make your own with a sealing machine? Do those dimensions have to be exact?

September 2nd: I took a flyer on some store-brand plastic bags as a possibility for the literature bag—at $3, it was worth the try. No joy; they're trying too hard to make you not feel too cheap for not buying the name brand, so there's too much printing on the bag. They'll work for parts storage, so not a total waste.

September 3rd: I dithered with the tabs inside the cigarette lighter enclosure, but no joy—it still won't stay in. There's plenty of power; it glows a nice bright orange (I had to careful not to burn myself with the lighter again) when I hold it in. Back to the drawing board. At least I didn't blow another fuse …

The engine compartment got some more attention, as I removed some decades-old oil and grease—satisfying. I also put some tools in order (don't get me started on reading the sizes embossed on hex wrenches) and started to pack the container I keep my judging prep materials in. Finally, I put some Griot's Odor Exterminator in the car to try and remove some of the mustiness.

I was out in the garage for a few hours with temperatures in the mid-80s. The musical selections:

Door to Door, by The Cars  (1987)

Never Let Me Down, by David Bowie (1987)

Soundtrack from Risky Business (1984)

September 4th: the locking lug nuts bag arrived much more quickly than expected and I'm very happy—it was exactly as described. I gave the seller excellent feedback on eBay.

I also checked on the effectiveness of the Odor Exterminator after a little over 24 hours. It did a nice job; it's hard to describe, but the interior smells less and thus newer/less used.

Two sucesses in one day!

September 5th: I got a hint yesterday that the problem might be a mis-match between the lighter and the socket, so I tried all my lighters with the current socket. The first two lighters didn't stick—the third lighter quickly blew the CTSY/CLCK 15-amp fuse (again). Sigh …

… I think I'm going to put off trying to fix this until I can get a complete lighter/socket combination.

No more progress today.

September 8th: a morning of frustration.

It turns out that the passenger footwell courtesy light hadn't burned out. Instead, one of the wires had detached from the plastic clip that connects to the courtesy light assembly. Because of the psychotic construction the two wires that connect to the clip end up getting stretched any time the courtesy panel comes off—and sometimes otherwise. There is, of course, no play in the wires and they've hardened over the last 34 years. So, even though I was able to strip the wire and get to the light to work when the courtesy panel was detached, the act of re-attaching it pulled the wire right back out. I'll need to splice and extend both wires, and I probably need a new plastic clip. While I'm at it, I should probably replace the actual light bulb.

To add insult to injury, the little plastic bumpers I purchased for the rear hatch area simply don't fit (they're too thick to go in the appropriate holes). I hear this restoration complaint all the time from folks working on older Corvettes, so I suppose it's my turn.

September 9th: two PDFs show up in my email from the folks running the Altoona Regional, one for all attendees and one for folks who are having their car judged. No surprises—just a reminder that I'll need to leave my house at about 6:00 AM that Thursday so the car has time to cool down for the operations check later that day.

I have a moment of clarity and remember that few small lighting components in the C4 are Corvette-only. Bingo—turns out the Corvette courtesy light aasembly was a hatchback light in third-generation F-cars. eBay Motors once again provides; a light, a clip, and a pigtail are on their way.

Old school theory says that you use this on the inside and than protect it with traditional electrical tape. Since I never want to touch these wires again, I'm willing to take the extra step.

September 14th: while working on the underside of the car yesterday evening, I have a doh! moment—the oil filter is not an AC Delco service replacement (it's an off-brand). That's a full deduct for no good reason—and somewhat embarrassing for someone who has experienced a previous NCRS regional judging.

I stop by the local Chevrolet dealer and score not one but two PF454 filters (there's no point in not having a reserve one). There's all kinds of symbolism here: the dealer (now Armen Chevrolet) was once Frankel Chevrolet. I worked there part-time while I was in high school—between 1984 and 1986. Full circle.

This evening, I'll finish the underside cleaning and bring Lauren down off the lift.

7 days and 1 weekend to go.

September 15th: the oil has been changed, and the reassuring blue of the PF454 service replacement now sits underneath. For maximum points, I could paint the filter black and affix a replica label, but this car has many needs worth more points and effort. I back Lauren into our attached garage with its superior lighting and space.

I remove the passenger courtesy panel once more to deal with that detached wire to the courtesy light assembly. Before actually doing anything, I take pictures of everything—I want to wire this correctly the first time. After cutting power, I work first with the newly arrived light assembly, stripping its wires. Next, I detach what remains of the broken plastic clip and strip those wires. I make two inline splices and wrap them with splicing tape. Before doing anything else, I bring the power back on. The light works as expected.

I wrap the splicing tape with electrical tape (probably now the most protected harness in the car) and insert the new courtesy light assembly into the panel. Recheck it—still works. Wrestle the courtesy panel back in place and screw it back in. Still works—I'm declaring this fixed.

While I'm at it, I check for missing screws in the passenger compartment, since I have a full interior screw kit. I find one—worth the time spent.

The car is now generally as ready as it's going to be—only optimization remains.

I forgot to list today's musical selections while I worked on the car. They were:

Soundtrack from Top Gun (1986)

Big Generator, by Yes (1987)

Voices Of Babylon, by The Outfield (1989)

September 16th: I make a literature bag by taking a generic gallon-sized refrigerator bag and using an X-Acto knife and a straight edge to make some judicious cuts. It actually comes out decently—we'll see what the judges think on Saturday.

I start to pack Lauren with various materials I will need for both judging and being judged.

5 days to go.

September 18th: some last-minute prep. I give up (for now) on a new bag for the tire jack, pack the jack into the damaged but correct bag, secure it the wheel of the spare tire with the aged spring, and store the whole assembly into the upper position.

Next, I make sure that the lighter element I have in the car a) heats up correctly and b) doesn't blow the fuse. Good on both counts—moving on.

Finally, checking the megabuck ($895 in 1984!) stereo. There's serious contact noise on the bass slider, but that's what contact cleaner is for. Fixed—but I think I'll bring the cleaner with me to Altoona. Now, the cassette. The Cars Heartbeat City goes in. It plays nicely in forward, but slowly in reverse—I think that's the belts. The stereo will likely have to get rebuilt … again.

3 days to go.
