Random thoughts....

The Ferrari... I LOVE the GTB over the GTS. I like the clean lines of the hardtop roof. It just rocks. I would own one in a second.

The Buick is nice, too. KPotter had the Olds version, and they were nice cars. Rode well, drove well and actually got good MPG.

The Firenza? Burn it. Hate those J-Cars of that era... sorry...

The 928 has always been a favourite of mine. I do prefer the later GTS versions with a bit more engine, but the 80s editions are sweet! And the look is so modern and sleek. Looks new and fresh today. I know it was hated by the 911 snobs back then, but the shape has aged so very well. I am glad they are finally being accepted by the collectors market.

Thanks for the updates!!!

I don't subscribe, but I do watch. Lots of interesting stuff shows up there.

Cutlass Supremes of this era are starting to show up in AACA judging. It makes sense—they were hugely popular, selling over 3.5 million between 1978 and 1988. A couple years ago, I wrote about the 1981 Cutlass Supreme coupe.

In my humble opinion the Porsche 911, 928 and American made Corvette were fine examples of both luxury and performance that commanded the attention of the discerning auto buyer during the tumultuous 80s. Not saying other offerings weren't more appealing but in many instances out of the reach of the average consumer.

I understand your intent, John, to bring a wide array of 80's vehicles to educate the masses on general automobile choices of that period. I enjoy the information you share and read with interest across all body styles and options. For the most part I am not a big 80's car fan but I do have my favorites. My 80's cars included an 83 Cavalier 2 tone brown exterior, dark brown fabric interior and loaded with options, a 1985 Chevrolet S-10 extended cab. A 1985 Dodge high top conversion van, a 1987 Olds 88 and a 1987 Ford Thunderbird. All of them were actually enjoyable vehicles. Some things they did better than others. None of them had much in the way of performance. As a side note. These were all the vehicles I owned when I was taking a stab at becoming more mature. lol Young family man at the time and had lost my need for speed

Thanks for the kind words. You are right that I try to write about more than the obvious eighties cars, though I really should treat some of those (Countach, DeLorean, GNX, 959) soon. Of the cars you listed, the nearest I get is the 1986 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24 coupe and the 1983 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (I don't think the S-10 Blazer or the Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight are close enough).

Wasn't the turbo 2.3l I-4 available? I know in the TBird that motor had a 5spd option.

It was the same used in the SVO Mustang...175hp! Pretty beefy back then... but with some mods, 300-325 was easily attained!

The next gen TBird/Cougar had a supercharged V6 with a 5spd available. It was a nice motor, but had head gasket issues.

Ford kept the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe through the 1988 model year, by which time it was up to 190 bhp. Mercury never got that sporty with the Cougar—the Windsor 302 ci V8 was the top-of-the-line for the entire generation, though power climbed from 130 bhp in 1983 to 155 bhp in 1988. I think they knew their market.

Interesting... I woulda sworn the Cougar had a turbo. Thanks for clarifying that!

I had friends with the Turbo T-Birds... pretty quick, too!

My late brother, Roy, had a 1986 T-Bird with the 3.8 litre V6. It was silver with red velour... Auto, A/C, Power stuff, AM/FM/Tape. Nice car. Drove SO well and was super reliable.

He was told by a mechanic to unload it as it neared 100k miles... it was because it was going to break down and become expensive to keep on the road. He followed the advise. I was never convinced the mechanic was right, but I didn't have whatever insight he had. Roy traded it in for a 1987 Buick Regal with only 19k original miles on it! A local magistrate bought it for his wife who barely drove it! The Regal served well for a year or 2 (he got a great deal on it) and he traded that in for a 1992 LeSabre.

His thinking was that the Regal would be a good gap fill. And when he traded it 18 months later, it would have "normal" miles on it. I donno if that worked out, it's been a long time.

Sadly, I doubt if it did. Roy never did have good luck with car deals.... Poor guy... he was an on the road salesman for a car parts company based in Philly. His territory was all over the DelMarVa peninsula. As such, he put some 25-30k miles a year on a car. That Regal was bought in 1990, IIRC. 19k miles on a 3-YO car was great. When he traded it in 1992, it had 49k miles or so on it. As such, a 5 year old car with 49k miles was great! I just donno if he got the deal he shoulda gotten.

I remember seeing these in the dealerships back in the day.

They had two problems for collectibility...

1. RUST. Japanese cars of this era were prone to rusting. They came over on musty salty ships, getting inundated with salty air and moisture. The only ones that survived were the ones that were washed out and lived in the Southwest!

2. Electrical glitches. My sister-in-laws (Roy's wife) brother had a 300ZX of about this vintage. The car was in the shop for all sorts of electrical issues. I remember specifically that the stereo was replaced at least once in his 2-3 year ownership.

They did sell a number, but most were viewed as lux transportation, not anything "special" so they got driven into the ground, the engines salvaged to support early Z-cars and the rest rotted away.

That was a great truck. Dependable, sound vehicle and comfortable to drive. It had vinyl seat material, rear fold up seats, rubber floor mat, manual, long bed, 2.8l V6, 5 spd. Dark Blue over blue interior. Sticker was I believe $11,200. Traded my well beaten Cavalier on it. The Cav was great when new but everything mechanical seemed to deteriorate quickly. That car was a curse to me. It was less than a month old and I lent it to my ex-wife to go job hunting. She got into a fender bender banging a U-turn. It was all downhill from there.

I don't know why I had such bad luck with others having accidents. Sue put a gash in the cab area that went clean through turning short into a fire hydrant. Got that repaired. Later some ass clown under-aged kid took his grandma's car for a joyride through the parking lot where my S-10 was parked and wiped out into 3 vehicles. Mine got the least of it. It was a hit and run and I believe the crash car was uninsured. The cop told me that getting any money from them my chances were slim to none. I filed with my own insurance and ate the $500.

It's interesting... everyone seems to have owned that one car that gets into situations... wrecks, tickets... whatever.

Mine was my first Prelude. A 1992 Prelude Si. I bought it new in September 1992. Over the 18 months I owned it, I caught 2 tickets and 1 accident... and then the final accident, not my fault cause I wasn't in the car!! My niece drove it into a tree. The cars death came in March 1994. My niece was fine, thankfully.

I wasn't too badly hurt on that, financially. I bought the car for $17,300. It was dealer demo, so I was able to knock off money because of mileage and the fact they already ate the floorplanning expense!

When it was totaled, thanks to me making extra principle payments, the loan was down to $12,995. State Farm was my insurance company and they covered the claim, and paid me $16,995! I drove the thing for 25k miles and 18 months for $300!!

My niece covered the deductible.

Thanks for the refresher. Mine had an AM/FM Bose system with cassette player. The seats were comfortable as was the car overall. Plenty of trunk space. As I mentioned, mine was loaded, which helped to make it bearable. Auto transmission as well which was great for my 60 mile per work day round trip to the Miami General Mail Facility. I learned a lot about my vehicle likes and dislikes from driving it.
