In my continuing Old Cars Being Used Like Normal Cars series, a 1961 Pontiac Catalina sedan parked in the light rain this morning at our excellent local hardware store.

Agreed—attractive cars, great names.

I'm sure they must live close by at 6 MPG.

I also like that some cars came in mini versions.

I guess it depends on what you consider old. I drive the 89 Vette to the store all the time.

I drove a 1962 Ford to college that had a 390 High Performance engine with dual point ignition, high rise aluminum intake manifold, heavy factory special headers, Holley four barrel with manual secondaries and a high lift cam. It was a 375 HP engine with a Q designation.

I never got under 13 mpg and I could get around 17 mpg if I drove somewhat human. This was in trips across ND from Medora to Fargo, about 340 miles. It was on the interstate at 75+++ MPH.

I bought the car used with 120,000 on it and drove it another 60,000 or 70,000 miles. I wish I still had it.

Once in a while you'll see some around here. The local hot rod club gets theirs out and runs around town, etc, sometimes we gather as a group. I have a pic somewhere of all of us in the Sonic, I ought to make a black and white of it.
Good thing I'm not rich, I see a lot for sale I'd like to have

...way back in the day I had an old Pontiac like this only with more patina ...... it had a straight 8 and 3 on the tree.... it was my winter ride as my summer ride was a chopped Harley.... me and a farmers daughter were out necking in it on a cold night in one of her dads fields when the engine quit and her curfew was coming on fast...... there was an old farm truck in the next field over and I stole that and took her home and dropped her off down the road a bit and took the farm truck back to the field of lust and then hopped in old Nell and she fired right up and all was good in my world..... true story from the good ole days...

I was thinking about my old 66 T-Bird 390. I thought my mpg was terrible back then.

I think the worst mileage was actually in the early 1970s—cars were heavier and engines were bigger. In my research for the Riviera Project, folks complain about the fuel mileage until about 1977. The first-generation cars got 10-11 city. By the time the Feds get around to testing in 1973, the range was 8.2-9.8 city (!).

For the Riviera, the worst of all was the example that was also the heaviest ever—1974's model was rated at 8.3 mpg city. After that, manuafacturers figured out how to game the system and cars actually got more efficient:

1975—12 mpg city
1976—12 mpg city
1977—15 mpg city

MPG has improved a lot... my brothers 67 Vette (L71 427!) got 10... never better!

I suspect that Pontiac would get low teens on the highway, if the engine was in good tune.

I remember all too well... my first car was an AMC Pacer (sigh). It had a 258ci I-6 with a 1 bbl carb. My mom kindly bought this car for me for Christmas 1981, because it was an AMC, which made such great cars as the Rambler some 20 years earlier. I understand the logic, but do some research, please.

That Pacer got shit for gas mileage. For the most part, it was gulping down at the 18-20 MPG range, local highway. Meaning, 40 mph avenues that were called highways. I graduated HS in 1983 and did a convoy drive to FL with my brothers family. He had a nearly new, 1981, Ford Crown Victoria. Plush, lux, and loaded... Nice car... as we drove down, he was getting 25 MPG on the highway, within this comfy cocoon of luxury... and I was getting 15 MPG. In this noisy shit box of an economy car. It just didn't seem fair.

That car made me so damned conflicted, yes, Mom got me a car for Christmas, super generous but it was such a POS... I hated it... and being the "husky" kid, a big round car didn't help my status one damned bit.

To update, my C6 (LS2 MN6) gets nearly 30 MPG on the open highway!
