Hey Gurus,

Sad news to share. Yesterday there was a catastrophic event which claimed my car that I've had for the past 13 1/2 years. I can only speculate as to the cause but it seems to be fuel related. As I started the car it backfired in the intake and immediately caught fire. Luckily I was able to push the car away from the house which prevented additional damage but there was no saving the Corvette. It's a total loss.

I'm dealing the with insurance headache now. I'm not sure what I will replace it with, I'm not jumping into anything right now. No worries, I'll still be around my Corvette brothers and sisters.

No one was hurt and cars can be replaced easier than people. I'm thankful for that.

Sorry for your loss. Who worked on the car? Never mind. It sucks big time. Hopefully your new driveway wasn't damaged too badly. You've sort of already replaced it with a Trans Am. No? I'm glad there was no damage to the house and you are OK.

Yes, everyone is ok which is the most important thing.

No work had been done on the car recently and it had been running well. I'm speculating the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm could have ruptured or possibly a fuel injector could have leaked or stuck open. Hard to say, just a freak occurrence.

So sorry for your loss. Then again, insurance is there for situations like this one. At least no additional damage happened to the house or anyone.

Had a friend in Colorado had nearly the same thing happen to his 84. Like you, he was able to push the car out of the garage, just in time. Seeing your pictures remind me of the pictures he took....Deja Vu

time to look towards the future Matt..... better time coming...

Sorry to be a downer in an already bad situation, but I hope your insurance company treats you better than they did a former co-worker. His ‘78 burned down in his driveway at night. He didn’t know about it until a neighbor banged on his door as the fire department got there.
His insurance company asked for tax records, proof of income, debt information, you name it. They treated him like he’d done it for fraudulent purposes. He eventually got his money, but it took some time. Months as I recall.
I truly hope it goes better for you.

Thanks, Mike.

Bob, that happened to my friend about 2 years ago. Some animal built a nest next to his exhaust and it caught the car on fire. FD determined the cause and the insurance company still took almost 2 months to pay and did the same thing as you mentioned.

I have Allstate and I have an additional rider on my policy for the upgrades to the car. They are still making me jump through hoops and send receipts and whatnot. To be honest with you it's frustrating and I'm not happy with the service. They have already made me one lowball settlement offer which I laughed at. I'll get it taken care of but just remember insurance companies are not in the business of paying out claims.

I have State Farm. I'm thinking the agreed upon insurance from companies similar to Haggerty might be a better option. Only two of my darlings fit in the garage. (The two 911's). Many classic insurance companies require secure storage. Good news Matt. They sell George Thorogood cd's on ebay cheap.

On a side note. All the money I've paid in insurance on my C-4's would put me into a C-6.

Could not agree more on the 'agreed value' insurance. I've got it on both the Vette and T-Bird through Berkley. I have not had a need to file a claim but it's not very expensive for mine. It's a collector car policy and very affordable.
In fact after I had the Vette for a while and put a bunch of $$ into it for various upgrades I called and wanted to increase the coverage and it was very easy to do.
Just FYI.

Oh, dude... that so sucks.

I am glad you and the family are ok!!! The house is a big plus, too!

The car can be replaced, but after 13 years, the memories run deep. I sold my C4 after 17 years... it was hard to make the decision, but easy to see it go... it was time.

But this was not your call... that super stinks!!!

If you need any insight, call.

Thanks guys (and gals).

Still working through the process. A week today.

The TA has agreed value through haggerty. Had I known the difference beforehand, the Vette would have as well. Live and learn.

You may want to do what is (or was?) called a CCC evaluation... This is where dealers are asked to report what they would expect to sell a car for.

It might be the best option here...

Who is your insurance company?
