I was just getting told that on FB too. Seems there's a RLSebring that started making these and they are allegedly OEM replacement. Not actual OEM but close as you can get. I read over on Cf in a thread I found where someone said the knockoffs scratch very easy and don't fit well. This original dude tho says his isn't made Cheap Chinese then at the bottom of his sales page it says made in Taiwan...
I need one new headlight for the car, but will look stupid with other faded one. For that $800 cost of one I can spend half that and refresh them both. The rest of it isn't busted. |

Is it cloudy on the outside? Maybe a candidate for just headlight restoration? 3M makes a nice kit.

Don't confuse Taiwan with China. Their build quality is leaps and bounds above China.

Matt - I've restored them once already, they're shot. And with the accident one outer lens is broken although the rest of it is fine.
Andy - I did not know that. I figured Taiwan was no different. I went ahead and ordered these, not sure what he was using for the 'sealant' but I will need to get my hands on that too. Corvette Mods showed an option to order that as well, but RLSebring's Ebay site didn't. |

The sealant is a butyl material I found it on Amazon.

I’m considering the ones he has that are made in Mexico. They are a little more expensive, but look good.
Go directly to his website and buy them there, doesn’t charge shipping https://www.c6c7vette.com/lens-service |

I didn't see what he used in his video for sealant, nor did I know he had a website.
I have already placed my order on the ebay site and the "set" (both lenses) together is cheaper than what he has here. I got both lenses plus both gaskets, shipping and tax for $313 (Taiwan). Wasn't aware there was a different option I also had sent a message to him with the "contact seller" button on Ebay but never did hear back, so am wondering if my order has even been processed. |

Okay,
We did these Sunday finally. The hardest part seemed to be getting all the old sealant out of the channel. Some tips: *First: We set the oven on 350. This seemed to work fine. *We did remove the module off the rear, can't see how heat like that wouldn't harm it (??) *Also, be sure to lower the rack you're sitting it on or else the little tabs (pictured) will melt. It won't hurt anything but their shape will distort. *Insert them a time or two periodically to keep old sealant softer to get it all out *have a dual working area where you can work, and also set the other half of the light *keep all lint and dust off the inside of the thing. The kit came with both lenses, gaskets and enough sealant to do both lights. The sealant is in one large roll, so half accordingly prior. Save your screws and pieces. Noted difference: these new lenses do not have the tabs or pegs that the new gaskets attach to. This confused me as for all the trouble the vendor went to in order to ensure these were as close to OEM as possible, why were those left off? All pieces went back together like they should have, and to heat back up we used a setting in the oven of 190. After about a half hour, you can unclamp these and they should be good to go. I was happy with the turnout. I will edit that post, however as I went back to the posted link for the ones made in Mexico and they are the closest to factory originals. I did see that the gaskets I was sent look like my factory ones, which are also what appears to come in the Taiwan lens set I ordered. I did not get the other gaskets that were shown in that Taiwan link up there. If I have to do this ever again I will order those from Mexico, the price really isn't that much more at all.

Let me know how it all goes and fitment. If I do this again I'll order the Mexico ones, but I'd already ordered the Taiwan set before I saw a post that others existed. these went together nicely just were missing those tabs and pegs is all I could tell. Would be interesting to know of any other difference there might be. Our Vette club plans to meet Thursday, I thought I'd take them to show the group as we have other C6ers in there.

My new lenses came today. Might try doing this tomorrow. I have a second set of headlights, so I don't have to take them out to change the lenses.

Just looking at the Mexico lenses, they appear to have the same tabs as OEM. The gaskets I got are the ones that are twice as thick as OEM.

Well, after my trip to the 'city' today, I decided to try my hand at one of the lights. Pre-heated the oven to 350, while that was going, I disassembled the headlight. Threw it in the oven for 20 minutes, pulled it out and pried and pried trying to separate the lens from the case....to very little success. Back in the oven for another 20 minutes, this time the lens succumbed to my efforts. Then to fun part of digging out the old sealant...I was able to figure out the correct method... a small flat screwdriver just a hair narrower than the width of the groove and pulling tension on the sealant as you dig out the junk. Took me about 40 minutes and I lost about 5 lbs from sweating... and I was sitting in the AC cooled house while I was doing it....worked my arse off. Swapped the inner valance (colored part) to the new lens, laid in the new butyl sealant and heated to oven to 200* and threw the the case back in to heat the sealant for 15 minutes. Pulled out the case and stuck the lens back on...this is a real PITA to lne everything up and get it set down into the groove. As a matter of fact, I didn't get it down at the point...and didn't realize it until an hour later. So I took it out to the shop, and fired up my heat gun and warmed up that end and used some clamps to pull it completely down. 10 minutes later, clamps removed the lens is seated properly.
Now with this experience, I'm hoping that the second one will go better and easier. |

Well, today I decided to do the other headlight. This time I had extra pair of hands, GS#3. First thing I did different was, left it in the oven about 5 minutes longer (25 as compared to 20 last time). Next thing, I had GS hold the headlight in his lap (with plenty of old towels under to buffer the heat). to hold it while I pried it open. Doing it this way saved about 15 minutes. The next thing was again, having GS hold on to the headlight as I dug the old sealant out...it was actually still warm so we were able to get it out in 5 pieces, the longest piece was about 16-18" long. Next we Pre-heated the oven to warm the new sealant up, setting the heat at 220 compared to 200 and left it in for 16 minutes compared to 10. The last thing was having 4 hands to line up the new lens and get it seated properly. The butyl stayed warm and pliable longer than before. AND I started at the lower, sharpest point of the lens putting it in first and working toward the 'fatter" end. Put a few clamps on just to hold it in place until the butyl cooled. Now it's just a matter of pulling the bumper and fender again, swapping the headlights. Oh, the second lens took an hour and a half compared to over three for the first one.

Tee, having a second set of hands made all the difference. It took both of us on my set. Just someone to hold the danged thing helps a ton. I was very happy with how mine turned out and seeing them in the car, the gasket around them looks just fine. I'm very happy. There were places to attach my gasket on the back sides and I reused the thin metal nuts to hold them in places but it was odd to me that my set didn't have the tabs or pegs, which would have helped a ton. We took them to the body shop since we were getting the car mostly put together and Larry looked them over and we decided to use his glue to attach my gaskets, and we taped the crap out of them till it dried so they for sure aren't going anywhere. That narrow corner kept slipping off. I'm very happy overall with it. Now I need to order some paint protection film for the headlights and fog lights. I'd like to order some for the whole front end rear 'hips' too but that gets on up to a couple grand just for the film, nevermind putting it on. I figure I can do the lights myself but not the front bumper. I'd like some on the doors due to door dings . We use two sources here, Xpel and Fellers.
Tommy, I'm not usually one for car parts in the kitchen but sometimes the need justifies the means lol |
