Yesterday was a nice day here in Maryland, so I took the Vette for a ride. The heat was on high, and when I turned it off, I smelled a faint odor of antifreeze; so I guess maybe my heater core is leaking? I am not seeing any leaks, and w/ the defrosters on, there is no "smoke", in fact the smell then goes away.
I replaced every hose in the car when I installed a new water pump in '07, but I used an high flow model, and have had to replace the intake manifold gasket because of it. I am afraid that the water pump is taking out the heater core now?

Anybody have any idea whats going on here?

Thanks, Randy

a wiff of coolant isn't always a problem with the core.

There is a chance, but the real tell is if the floor is wet.

I would be 100% sure before tearing into that project... trust me...

Also, I really doubt the waterpump will effect the heater. There is a check valve on the inlet that controls volume and flow rate.

It's not really a check valve, it's an orifice, but it controls the volume of coolant that goes to the heater core.

When I had a slight coolant smell it ended up being the plastic tank/metal core seam on my radiator had decided to split after 20 years. I'd stick my nose under the hood and see if I could smell anything.

That's how it started with the heater core on my 93LT1. I had already replaced the radiator/water pump/all hoses, etc, and then I started getting that faint smell of antifreeze in the car. It was leaking slightly from the heater core and you could see a few spots on the carpet!
Since it was the start of summer, I bypassed the core. Finally, after months of procrastination, I worked up the courage to replace the core myself. I completed the job this past Sunday, and all is well!

Welcome onto the boards there. Leland is not too far from here. Did you go to the Joe Alcoke vette meet in New Bern last May? Bunch of guys from Wilmington vette club were there.

Yup.

When pulling off, and puttin' on new hoses onto the core nipples, you gotta' use CAUTION. The nipples will fracture and give you a small leak, BEHIND THE FIREWALL UGH.

Pray, and then feel the carpet pass side...

Howdy!
Thanks for the welcome!
No, I didn't make it on the New Bern trip, but it would have been a nice cruise! Happy New Year!

I get a little wiff once every couple of months in my 92. The first coulpe of times, I checked under the carpet, nothing. Now I don't worry about it.

The same thing happens on my 2000 Silverado.

Neither vechile looses any coolant.
