The rubber-like coating on my shifter consol is pealing (of course). Anyone with experience or ideas in how best to re-finish? Any products avail for stripping existing without effecting the plastic? I heard that the factory paint product is no longer available? Any alternative paints/finishes that would match the existing? |

I think I am about to spend $180 and have the radio trim panel and the shifter console done in black carbon fiber.
If you want to strip and paint I have heard that the paints made for plastic work best. About any Auto Parts store has it in stock. Krylon brand maybe, not sure. |

Thanks for the response.
I did exactly that, used 'plastic enamel' as a base primer....then found another satin/flat enamel to top coat. I tried about 5 different ones, finally settled on one that matched the sheen perfectly. Found a few flaws on my radio/hvac surround so did that as well. Looks real purty and perfect.....now I'll find out how durable it is. |

I had my entire dash/console out earlier this year, chasin' an electrical problem. While out, I washed all the trim in the dishwasher. Some of the rubber came off, and while surveyin' the damage, I noticed more was almost literally fallin' off, leaving a perfect surface.
Unfortunately, some spots had bonded well. It took a blade to carefully chisel it off. The scrapes came clean with rubbing compound, then polishing compound, then Armor All. This pic shows all paint removed, except one spot that I hadn't finished - just below radio volume control. That one is gone now also... Looks better than new. |
