Well, I couldn't get into work tonight due to the heavy Ice everywhere...now we just lost power. I live way out in the sticks so I am sure it will be while for power to return. It's 28 degrees out too....thank goodness for gas fireplace!

That's a better catch all. So when the next ice age starts, they can cover their asses.

Yep....09:30 still no power and they say it may be late tonight or tomorrow before it comes back on. To answer the question above, I am able to get on the net because I have a laptop battery and a wireless internet card. However, the batteries are getting drained pretty fast.

We have a propane fireplace and 30% in the tank so we should be ok. I am just hoping the pipes in the basement don't freeze.

I didn't live in Michigan much longer.

one of the 1994 storms did the same exact thing to me.

It started early afternoon. the state closed down ops at like 3pm. In fact, it was yesterday, 1994!

I had a 3 mile drive home... it was 10 mph all the way there... then in my rear view I see some asshole in a mid-80s cutlass just FLYING down the highway... aiming at me... I could not move. he sees the line stopped and merges into a merge lane to the left. he then slides through that crossing and continues into the median strip... finally stops about next to me... front wheels burried in icy grass.

that was also my nephews birthday. I could not even make his cake/ice cream party. I refused to drive on those roads. deadly.

Get yourself a car adapter for AC output. Charge laptop, flashlight batteries, etc. I found one for $19.

Invaluable.

I just came out from doing vendor runs and it really sucks out, maybe just shy of a foot on the ground. The Silverado 2500 shown here works pretty well, but the others out are clueless in their Camry's with "all season radials". I have fun actually, it goes from massive pushing if you are off the gas to massive loose on the gas. It is just like driving a 500+ HP Vette at Loudon, only at a slightler lower speed! The generator is a funny story. I bought it for the race trailer so when I am at Lime Rock, I have lights, power tools etc. At the time, my wife though it was a waste of $750, but when it powered up the entire house, Winter or Summer, she thinks that it is the best money ever spent. Especially last month when we were without power for 5 days!

Right now, this is my most worthless vehicle:

Yeha, when the wind storm(from Ike) hit over the summer we were w/o power for 5 days. We said at that time that we would buy a generator once they got back on the shelves. We never did. Then two months ago the power went out again for about 36 hours. And then this happens. I really wish we would have bought one!

You don't really have to get fancy, mine is a pull start, 5500 watt noisy thing. I plug it into the 220 V, 50 Amp welder circuit in the garage. I trip the primary breaker to the street first. Then with the garage 220 V breaker off, I plug in the generator via a 6 foot, 8 gauge cable, then start it outside. Once it is running, I trip the breaker on in the garage and now the entire garage and house are up. All the appliances are now up (gas water heater, furnace, range), well pump, and with a house full of compact fluorescents, most of the house can be lit. We can't use the big TV, but hey, I can live watching a 12 inch screen!

Noisy?
Yea, well. I bought my Generac 15 years ago for the track. It's 4000 w and does run my 110v mig. But, man, it's noisy at the track. One of the guys I pit with bought a Honda 4000w (so he could power the A/C in his trailer, sigh) and you can barely hear it run. But, mine cost $450 and the Honda is $1200.

It's interesting how you plug it in, Gary. Especially with the "Transfer Switches" costing $500+. I'll have to try it.
I usually run 2 extension cords. One to the furnace and one upstairs for lights/tv/computer.

I am not going to wire it to the house. We have heat via fireplace and all we need it for is for a light, charge items with batteries, a TV, and my wife's hair dryer.

I am on the net via Wireless card. AT this point, great investment on my part since we can't get broadband out here in these parts yet.

When you do it this way, you have everything running off their normal breakers. It is not only a hell of a lot safer, it allows you to use the breaker box as a switching network. I can select what to run, and when.
