Sounds like the bearing is almost toast on my AIR Pump on the '88. Anybody replaced one recently? I hope a new pump comes with the gasket for the tube.

why not eliminate it? Does MD require visual on an 88? Or are you out for 100% originality?

All the air pump does is help light off the main cat a little quicker. That's all it does. That and clutter the engine compartment and suck down 5hp. Oh, and fail and eat belts.

I don't care about originality on the '88. The '71 is another story.

I've only seen the eliminator pulley for L83s. Who makes one for L98s?

I'm interested.

You don't care about originality? What about those tacky gold stickers they hand out at bloomington?

Couple companies make them, but it's gonna run you about $150. I used an old air pump, gutted the fins, and stuck it back in there. Then I ripped all the air lines out that went to/from it. The bearing isn't really serviceable, but I threw a bunch of extra grease in there just to help it out in case.

You can make an eliminator for it for under $50 with a little creativity.

If you know a machinist, or have access to a lathe and mill and can do your own work (I am fortunate in that respect), you could do what I did. I fabricated this one out of 1/2" aluminum, some 3/4" aluminum barstock for the "standoffs", and bored an old alternator pulley out for bearings. The bearing mount is a piece of 1 1/2" steel shafting out of the scrap bin at the machine shop. May or may not be your cheapest route, but I like the way it looks much better than the aftermarket kits available from most suppliers.

dude, you need to make detailed instructions for that setup. Measurements, dimentions... what have you.

Then we need to make it available on the Guru tech library!!!

Better yet, you should make them and sell them for less than the $150 tpis charges.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

It may take me few days, but I'll try to put a sketch together with some dimensions. Maybe I can get #1 son (Trae1976) to do it on Autocad and post some good drawings. I'll work on it.

Breathless Performance out of Florida used to make Air Pump Eliminator kits, which consisted of a couple of powder coated mounting arms and a pulley to replace the pump, thus you change nothing on your set-up and it really is just a 20 minute changeover considering it just bolts in place where your current air pump is.

The benefit is HP if that is something that interests you....unlike some other C4 items, it "really" is worth some HP....literally around 10 hp.... as per my tests years ago. Not much I know, but better than a swift kick in the head.

I do not know if Breathless still makes them..... or even if they are still in business. But should be easy to find. They used to be a supporting vendor of CF.... thus maybe they are still over there, I dunno.

I will say, the kit was a little over priced at around $ 150 back then when I bought it..... but, it was hassle-free, so I guess from that perspective, maybe it was worth it.

good luck !

So a question, when you eliminate the air pump what do you do with the lines? cap them, pull them off? This is interesting. Thanks,Doug

For the lines that hook into the exhaust manifolds, just cap them off. I removed all of the lines that ran in front of the engine block that were accessible. Much cleaner and easier to work in there. I left the tube that runs down to the cat because it was a nuisance to remove.

I removed the check valves from the headers and installed 1/2" NPT pipe caps on there.

I got some pretty stainless ones from mcmaster.com

You can run it temporarily with the check valves, but they will actually let air draw into the exhaust system at certain rpms and make noise.

I put cheap home depot caps on mine.

I don't have any good pics, but you can see it a little here from when I was changing my injectors.
