No tickie no shirtie. He who has the best price wins. Chinese labor is cheap and they'll polute anything to make a buck. Won't be long before Chinese investors own Sears/K-Mart if they don't already.

Vise Grips were invented by a guy in De Witt Nebr and for years and years the factory was in that town and provided jobs for many folks. A large company bought them out and moved the whole thing to China. The town just dried up and blew away.

Ok... I just read that... I think the OP over at CF needs his eyes examined.

Sears DOES have the Companion brand, green colored packages, made in China.

Conventional Craftsman hand tools - not electric mind you - are made in the USA. They have the USA flag logo on them.

Sears would NOT be that stupid...

If they do start outsourcing all of their stuff to China that's too bad. But I won't go buying snap-on to replace it. In my opinion (and all my mechanic friends) snap on is way over-priced for what you get. And my one buddy hates his snap on rep because he's a tool (no pun intended) and almost refuses to warranty broken tools. Or how about when a screwdriver slips and instead of giving you a new one they just replace the handle? That's lame.

BTW, I do think the craftsman professional line is really good quality, I have a handful of item from that.

Well, I hope all my tools last a long time...

I disagree re: Snapon.

If the local truck guy is a dick, that would make it bad, but he can't deny a warrantee, really.

I love their wrenches... super slim and fit your hand perfectly. I also like their screwdrivers. I have some that are over 20 YO now! Still perfect.

China does not make anything to "standards". I see it all the time in the work I do. But sure they'll stamp/stencil any certification or standard you want on the product.

I haven't seen any Crapsman hand tools labelled China yet, but I will look closely.

If I'm going to buy Chinese, I'll just go to Harbor Freight and avoid the markup. If I want quality, I'll go elsewhere.

As for that thread... well, they are all wrong. Yes it is the consumer's fault everything is outsourced, but the solution is not to educate the consumer, it won't happen. The consequences of buying products made from cheap oversease labor are way to far removed from the short term benefit of saving a buck. The only way to reduce the outsourcing problem is to tarriff the hell out of the imports or to require the importers to meet the same conditions our domestic ones do as far as pay and benefits. But that will never happen either, because that'd cost us cheap asses more for everything we buy, and we'd bitch and vote anyone out of office that tried.

Ever heard of Flint, Michigan? GM did the same thing years ago and it had nothing to do with China...

Stuff happens. It isn't right, but it isn't always about cheap labor.

Blaming China for our trade deficit is like blaming spoons for Rosie O'donnell getting fat. China does not give a **** about our way of life, nor should we expect them too.

No one on here has ever heard of Flint, MI. Because it's a s-hole. Industry is gone from there. Just like Detroit is now. My dad has been laid off for a year so his company can move overseas and make parts for GM cheaper.

Tariffs are not a bad idea, but I don't see our government taking too many steps to make things right. Everything they dip their hands into to make better turns out wrong...ie, bailout, etc.

There is a backlash starting... it's a slow roll, but it's taken 35 years for us to get this messed up, so it won't turn around instantly.

Give it time, I think the reality will set in and the current economic changes could be the catylist to fix the problem.

Remember, there are still major firms that do manufacturing here in the states...

Snapon, Edelbrock, Matco, AFR, Brodex... just a few that come to mind.

How much of the market share do you honestly think Snap-On has in the tool industry? Or any of those other manufacturers?.

I'd bet it's a fraction of a percent.
