This is why I've been saying that's a 50/50 chance as to weither you'll get a good instructor when you do an HPDE.
This is why we (SCCA) have a program to license instructors. More than 1/2 of the classroom session (over 2 hours) in about instructor/student interaction, how the new driver's brain works, how phrase your instructions and most importantly: how to motivate a student with positive reinforcement. We even use ideas from the FAA pilot instructor manual. We do full evaulation sessions with the new instructors on track before we'll sign the license application. The first thing we say to students is "You're going to have fun and you're going to be safe." We also tell students that, if they have a problem we (the chief instructors)want to hear about it right away. We tell new instructors to never say anything negative. There's no reason to. If a student blows a corner, I'll tell them it's OK, we'll get it on the next lap. The driver here did just fine for a newbee. BTW, ThunderHill is my home track, 2000+ laps here. |

First lap of the first session and the instructor is jumping his shit?
I feel bad for the driver, he was courteous and I didn't see any mistakes. He was stuck behind a slower car and probably didn't even know the course layout yet. I did a little bit of novice instruction at 2 of my track days and also had those same drivers ride shotgun in my car. You take what you get and try to help from there. Criticism isn't motivating. I'm glad to see the driver stuck it out and didn't seem to be phased by it. That "instructor" has a lot to learn. I had a motorcycle instructor that was pretty bad. Here we are paying for instruction and trying our best to stay shiny side up in a big parking lot and it was nothing but negative and snide comments. Later he had the nerve to pull me to the side and cuss me out. A girl navigating the slalom ahead of me was losing control so I thought it would be safer to go off course to the side rather than get hit by whoever might be behind me. I had a word with the head instructor after all that and apparently I wasn't the only one. I wonder how many new rider he discouraged from the hobby that day. |

If I didn't know any better I would have thought that instructor was me. Some people instruct, some people listen. I like to listen.
