Just checked the oil in the ZO6 no oil burning but oil is black. Dad changed oil from Amzoil to Mobil1 extended life. I'm sure the detergents are dispursing the Amsoil built up. However its a little troubling to see it. Do you think I should change oil again. I have about 1100 miles on last change. Just bought 3 jugs of Mobil 1 @ WalMart! scary place! Dad has always used Wix oil filters and K&N. Are Frams any good? I know I'm asking a lot of questions!! Thanks Erin

You ask a legitimate question. They have gone as far as to cut filters in half to show filter construction. I don't believe that Fram has earned favored filter status.

I remember the oil filter post! Regarding the oil color, I think I will run it another thousand miles and if it is cleaning the Amsoil deposits out it will just clean that much more! Does that sound right!! Erin

I don't put a lot of miles on my cars. I mainly change them because of aged oil. It's only an oil change. If it makes you feel better, do it. I'd rather do too many changes than too few.

The more expensive Frams are fine.

If you don't know the difference, at least look at the rubber drainback valve inside the filter, if it's orange, that's silicone rubber and generally means the rest of the filter is going to be superior as well.

I would stay far far away from the orange Frams or anything from AC delco at least.

Erin, I have a lot more miles on mine than you do on Zoe and it is all original and neither burns nor uses any oil between changes. Guess I would be considered unorthodox in that I use 4 qts of Mobile One 5W30 and 1 quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer at every change. I run Mobile One filters as well, based upon some past research I believe they are worth the money.

Stay with Wix, K&N and Mobil 1 filters.

I wouldn't worry at all about the color right now and I'd run it for another 3k at least. Normal change at 5-6k.

I would go to the regular Mobil 1 synthetic. I'm not a fan of the extended life and won't use it again.

If you're storing the car this winter, change the oil before you put it away.

Andy I put Lucas oil stablizer in it.
Bill your right about extended life, will use reg Mobil 1 from now on.
She was getting hyper last night about her oil being so dark. We will change it in the late fall when we put it up for the winter. She is driving it to Minn/St.Paul this weekend to see a couple of Purdue buds.
Her boy friend was complaining of wipelash when they came here after their driving outting. She was probably racing somebody!

Glad to hear I am not the only one that believes in Lucas. I mentioned it on CF once and 'the crowd went wild' critizing the hell out of it and me for using it. Bunch of real idiots over there. (Still some good guys too, but lots of idiots)

So CF is Corvette Forum right, I dropped by there once! wow
as study should be done on egos! I'm sure there are other forums but I don't have the time or patience. IE how fast did you go before you hit the brick wall.
I have used Lucas for a long time before that it was Hyperlube. I have a lot of Hot Rod buddies that use Lucas.

I think Lucas (and Amsoil for that matter) make very good products.
That being said, I don't use them.
I put 250k on a SBC before it started to smoke a bit running Quaker State dyno & 4.5k changes.

Now I run one oil, M1 in the C4, Silverado @135k mi. (uses zero oil), the racecar with flat tapper (500 mi. changes) and even the snowblower.

The flat tappets show zero wear,BTW.

Ha, it can't be anything like mine. I spent the day muttering "You're insane".
I'm up to 3 pickup loads to the dump. And I'm only 1/2 done.

I was just thinking about that today, what would I tell the firefighters if I had a house fire?

"Got anything flammable in that garage, sir?"

"Well, gee, not too much"
"Let's see, I got:
5 gal. urethane car paint plus reducer and activator.
couple quarts of lacquer
2 gal lacquer thinner
a gal of acetone
a gal of mineral oil
a gal of WD40 plus 2 spray cans
5 cans of brakeclean
a gal of carb cleaner
5 cans carb cleaner
5 gal of 110 octane gasoline
2 gal of regular gasoline
full size oxy/acc tanks
7 gal of industrial automotive parts solvent.
a propane tank, cylinders and mapp gas cylinders"

"You guys bring any marshmallows wid Ya?"

I would tell the firefighter to run.
Two full Ace/tanks and two 02 tanks
6 mapp gas tanks
10 propane tanks
2 large 40lb. propane tanks for heater
55 gal waste oil drum full.
1 gal of lac thinner.
10 gals of gas for Toro mower.
1 1961 Impala SS hub cap.
Oh and gun powder for my reloading.
Please note gun powder is stored in a fireproof locker.
BOOM!
This is the home garage.

To get back on topic, it's normal in a higher mileage engine for the oil to turn black somewhat quickly. Being black is not a sign the oil is worn out.

Mobil 1 Extended has very high concentrations of several cleaners and probably there is likely a lot of crud in solution. I'd dump it now...cheap insurance. I wouldn't use an orange filter.
