Is there any way of removing the ugly cancerous crud that is growing on my center inserts?

Polish, sand, buff or any miracle that one just sprays on and suddenly has nice shiny aluminum wheels again?

Sorry Ed. No center crud, vette gets washed after each outing. Whats causing the wheel crud? Is it greasy? Mothers all in one wheel spray works good for removing brake dust and road crap. I have not experienced the wheel crud growth yet.

Are you talking about the clear coat breakdown on plastic center caps? Center caps have a lifespan. Replacements are very expensive. Sometimes you can luck into a set of pretty good used ones. You could clean them up as best you can and shoot them with a new coat of clear but they won't look as good as new. Only new looks as good as new.

How about some pics of crud?

try this...

NAPA makes an aluminum cleaner, it will take off the crud. I would then find a guy with a media blaster to remove all other materials.

Get some wire wool and smooth the entire surface, then hit with clear. I would use hi-temp engine clear so it will deal with the radiant heat from the brakes better.

I think that may be painted... not just cleared... so you may need to find the right silver. Ecklers has it, at a price.

Those center caps are 88-89, and are aluminum not plastic. You will have to lightly sand and polish them, then hit it with a can of spray clear.

Remove the emblem while doing this because those are no longer available and can get damaged.

Bogus and Matthew, thanks for the info and advice.

Well I needed something else to do with my free time when the snow starts flying. I'll keep the 19 inch Harmann's on till I can get these looking a little better. Haven't put it on the road yet this year, had knee replaced and find it still painful to get in and almost impossible to get out without crawling.

Thanks again
